Firebird is a casual izakaya in Causeway Bay. In an area full of excellent Japanese restaurants and hidden izakaya, Firebird is a bit more easier to access as it's ground level and not hidden away. I've been here for lunch and boyfriend wanted to give it a try for dinner so we could discuss an upcoming trip to Japan just to get in the mood.During dinner time, they have no sets unlike lunch time where sets are available. During dinner time, they have no sets unlike lunch time where sets are available. Everything is a la carte. Menu is in English and Chinese. They have a number of yakitori skewers and small items geared for a drink.
Fuji Mountain ($78). We started with drinks. Boyfriend ordered a cocktail that was made up of sake, lychee liqueur, blue curacao and fresh lychee. It was supposed to look like Mount Fuji from the title it was given. It really didn't but it was pretty good. The taste of sake wasn't strong and overpowering. The lychee made it sweet but not too sweet that it tasted like a sugary drink. Boyfriend gave me the lychee and it was soaked in sake. Loved it.
Mango-bar de Mocktail ($68). I ordered a mocktail that was made up of fresh mango, fresh orange, mango sauce, syrup and soda. It also came with a mango popsicle. The popsicle was really good. The drink had a strong mango taste and wasn't watered down by the ice used to make it. A fun yet messy drink.
Vegetable Dip with Firebird Miso ($48). We were curious what this was and so ordered it. It is exactly what the menu described it as. Cut raw vegetables with a dip made from what I suspect was miso and a bit of mayo. The dipping sauce was great. I don't think boyfriend was thrilled with this veggie platter but I let him have all the sweet potato.
Seafood Sushi Treasure Chest ($188). The sashimi platter is called a seafood sushi treasure chest. This was mostly geared for one as it had a one slice of each type of seafood: tuna, salmon, prawn, scallop, white fish, uni, salmon roe, flying fish roe and two maki. The sashimi was fresh and firm.
Grilled Sweet Corn with Parmesan Cheese ($23). We ordered some grilled items. This was fabulous. Something about grilled corn with cheese. The mix of sweet and salty just works. I never would have thought to add cheese to corn but now I'm a believer.
Firebird Assorted Chicken Skewers ($128). We noticed that the chicken they used in this restaurant are from Kagoshima and they use chicken called genki as well as they seemed to really focus on chicken in general, we ordered an assorted chicken skewer set. This included chicken meatball, chicken with leak, chicken thigh, chicken breast and okra. The meatball came with egg yolk for dipping. A far cry from the lunch menu, the yakitori were heavily seasoned and not dried out. The chicken meat was moist and tender. The best was the chicken with leak.
Grilled Riceball with Soybean Paste ($28). We shared a riceball. It was grilled and slathered in soybean paste that tasted both sweet and salty.
Original Chicken Hotpot ($138). When this arrived, we were told to wait a while to boil before eating. Inside was some chicken meatballs, chicken thigh meat, cabbage and shitake mushrooms. Even with the boiling, the meat didn't go dry and tough. The soup was light yet flavorful. This came with a bowl of udon that was smooth and chewy.
Salmon and Hoikkaido Salmon Roe Pot Rice ($98). Kamebashi was on my mind after having dinner with a friend where we had this. I wanted to give this place a try. Inside was some salmon and salmon roe.
Portion size was exactly two bowls of rice. It was fragrant and lightly flavored with the taste of salmon. The roe gave it a salty burst.
Japanese Sweet Potato with Ice Cream ($48). Boyfriend really wanted this dessert when he saw it on the menu. It was basically mashed sweet potato with a scoop of matcha ice cream. If you love sweet potato, you'll probably like this dessert. It was warm so definitely comfort food. The sweet potato was smooth, creamy and sweet. A warm dessert complimented by cool bitter matcha ice cream. A good combination.
A casual izakaya where it's not too noisy. Seating was comfortable and not cramped. Prices not overly expensive and service was decent. A good place for dinner if I'm thinking of a friend gathering.
