I have visited Indonesian Restaurant 1968 a few times when it was still located in Causeway Bay, but this was the first time I came to the restaurant since its relocation to The L Place in 2011. I was here for lunch with a bunch of friends, and immediately fell in love with the ambience of the restaurant – despite being buzzling during lunch hour, the large space and the use of bare wood surfaces gave the place a down-to-earth and homely feeling.

Set lunches ranged from $98 to $148, and included a salad, a main course and a drink. The service was a bit careless or unresponsive at times, but this could perhaps be forgiven as the restaurant was very busy during lunch hour.

(1) We were given a small portion of papaya salad for the set lunch. The papaya was fresh and had a firm, crunchy texture, but it was very spicy and completely took us by surprise - we wished the waiters had warned us about it!

(2) The portion sizes at Indonesian Restaurant 1968 were not for the faint of heart. We ordered a Pineapple Fried rice with King Prawn to share, and could not imagine how one person was expected to finish it. The fried rice, contained in a pineapple shell, looked alluring. The fruitiness of the pineapple complemented the strong flavours of the meat and the seafood, and the prawns were grilled beautifully, which resulted in a delicious smokey flavour. However, the chicken in the fried rice was not very fresh, and the rice in general was a bit bland.

(3) The best-faring dish was the Hainan Chicken Rice. The chicken was tender and irresistibly full of flavours (and tasted much better than the chicken in the fried rice above), and the rice was soft and fragrant.

(4) Almost everything served came in bigger portions than expected, but even then we were once again surprised by how huge the Grilled Chicken Yellow Rice with BBQ Sauce was. The grilled chicken had a gorgeously roasted skin, and the meat on the inside, which was juicy and smooth, was perfectly complemented by the tangy BBQ Sauce. I also adored the yellow rice, which had a strong, attractive spice aroma.

(5) One of my friends, J, is a vegetarian, but I had a very busy week at work and forgot to check the menu beforehand to see if there were any vegetarian dishes for her. Fortunately, the menu actually had a full page of vegetarian dishes, and J went for the Yellow Ginger Rice with Assorted Veggie Dishes (V) ($118). The assorted vegetables were cooked in a scrumptious, flavourful curry sauce, and went very well with the yellow ginger rice.

I had wanted to try this restauarant for some time and as I was on my way to the Queens Road PCCW shop, I decided to stop by. We had no difficulty getting a table as it was 1215pm. We were surprised by the menu which featured very common and favourite Malay or Indonesian dishes such as nasi lemak ( coconut rice with condiments ) + soto ayam ( chicken clear soup), mee goreng/bakmi goreng ( fried noodles) + curry chicken +nasi goreng ( Indonesian fried rice )...We ordered nasi lemak and mee goreng

We had no difficulty getting a table as it was 1215pm.

We were surprised by the menu which featured very common and favourite Malay or Indonesian dishes such as nasi lemak ( coconut rice with condiments ) + soto ayam ( chicken clear soup), mee goreng/bakmi goreng ( fried noodles) + curry chicken +nasi goreng ( Indonesian fried rice )...

We ordered nasi lemak and mee goreng.

The nasi lemak was very well presented in a long plate with beef rendang + peanuts / fried small fish - ikan bilis + fried chicken. The rice was supposedly coconut rice but it taste more like chicken rice. It was disappointing to traditionist like us but palatable. The mee goreng was also well presented in a long plate. But the noodles used was maggie noodles instead of the (Indian style yellow noodle). The taste was not the traditional style but rather modern for my liking.

The drinks we ordered was lime soda which was the most authentic and traditional version that came with lime seeds...attached


All in all, it was nonetheless a wonderful experience to have eaten Indonesian. The taste was a new taste but palatable.

Lastly, we noted that the atmosphere was rather odd. It had rustic wooden furnitures more akin to a western fish n chip joint rather then Indonesian restaurant. But then again, the lighting was beautiful..and who cares ..we are in a globalised world..and modern Indonesian is here to stay...

印尼餐廳招牌菜係「印尼炒飯」, 第一次試一試難忘!但今次menu無, 所以試下另一至愛 - 海南雞飯!!首先黎左前菜, 個醬有花生粒, 味道還好...主角到! 雞超滑...雞脾肉走左皮黎食, 點埋2個醬(精髓)!!飯都好味, 好香椰味, 咁多飯都不知不覺食晒d飯 好驚! 哈哈!但太好味啦!所以每次到來都食都無厭既感覺! 但最好遇到印尼炒飯啦!

I booked this place for lunch after hearing good reviews. My friend and I both ordered the signature set lunch, which came with:1. Appetizer: Salad with noodle and vegetables in a sour sauce (small size, tasted ok)2. Main: A plate of various meats and vegetables with different sauces (see picture). Most were quite spicy.3. Drink: Indonesian Iced TeaI saw a few people ordering the fried rice noodle which looked good. Will come back to try more dishes, as their menu is quite extensive.

We've now been to 1968 twice and on both occasions had a most enjoyable meal. They have a big menu which includes lots of options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. The tofu curry is huge and delicious and the long, skinny spring rolls are some of the tastiest I've had. Can't vouch personally for the prawn and chicken dishes my friends ordered but they seemed very happy and there were no leftovers which is always a good sign. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly and even remembered

The decor is modern and funky and the toilets clean. Can't think of anything negative to say at all. We'll definitely be back!

印尼餐廳1968 Indonesian Restaurant 1968 在舊鋪時重未食過, 而家搬到中環, 决心一試. 餐廳環境十分闊落舒適, (1)招牌印尼炒飯,香噴噴,用石鍋上,夠熱又有飯焦,正!!如果隻蛋能夠做到流心就真係無得彈~~(2)黃咖喱雞, 香而不辣, 我本人就喜愛偏辣一點的咖喱 (3)茄子配Lady's finger一齊炒, 好食, 但好油!

Love the Beef Rendang, packaged inside a Pendan leaf with Rice. The Prawn chips were also pretty good. Nasi Goreng meets the bog standard for Indonesian cuisine. Def would go again.

測試結果非常驚喜!賣相已挺不錯了,層次分明,兩片薄荷葉在沙冰上,簡單精繳。椰奶香滑,而且甜度剛好,飲到最後也沒有因為被冰沖淡味道,只是綠豆粉條味道較淡,但跟椰奶是很配的。

一份小吃蝦餅三大件,六個人分吃剛剛好。蝦膠彈牙,香脆鮮美,佐酒一流。

伴碟的沙拉菜也很新鮮。事實上它們每碟菜式都伴有很多新鮮的沙拉菜/西蘭花,清新健康,毫不吝嗇,這是我十分欣賞的地方。

點了幾款,相比其他菜色,這個比較普通,但仍是超高水準之作。個人最喜歡還是雞肉串,肉質彈牙,醬汁惹味,正!

栗米肉粒餅

另一份小吃,看名字像很普通,樣子也沒很特別,放入口中卻很有驚喜。就像煎炸過而凝結了的栗米忌廉湯一樣,外面香脆,裡面卻是creamy的軟,還有粒粒栗米,是吃過最有趣的栗米餅。

據說印尼菜首重醬汁,而1968另一令我喜愛的地方就是,儘管餐牌上盡是濃烈醬汁類南亞菜式,在我們這些門外漢看來都是啡色濃稠的醬,但吃入口,每款菜色醬料的調味的確都不一樣,而一樣滋味。

跟巴東牛肉看上很像,但醬料味道不同,一定要二選一的話我會覺得這個醬汁味道更好。唯牛脷炆得有點太腍,咬下去少了一份韌勁,喜歡軟綿綿肉質的朋友可能會很喜歡。

賣相很可愛,黃羌飯像戴了一頂很高的葉子圓錐帽。飯有淡淡香味,軟硬恰當。不過吃過一輪濃味菜式後便很難試出其真味。

也許大家以為我傻了,同一句話說三次。但這道菜是十分少數吃得令我感動,而且讓我持續心情愉快一整天的食物。平時吃倉魚都覺得是便宜貨,沒很特別。但這條燒倉魚真的好食到傻。抱歉沒有照片,因為還沒來得及拍張較清晰的照片(餐廳燈光太昏暗),魚已被大家五馬分屍
燒魚很滑,肉質是新鮮的實正。魚身本身已有很惹味的調味,但是伴隨的一碟醬油和一碟綠色辣醬都好吃得不得了。尤其那辣醬,真的令人「嘩」一聲叫出來。

相對其主菜,這兒的甜品較為遜色。最不濟是上海冰,刨冰配粉紅色糖漿加罐頭水果,沒甚看頭。香蕉椰汁糕較好,滑嘟嘟的椰汁糕包著甜絲絲香蕉蓉,但就欠一點化學作用。

這個是中規中矩的甜品,賣相佳,香蕉也炸得很好,炸物配雪糕是沒有不好吃的理由,不過雪糕是一般貨色,也許是我期望太高,因此有點失望。

這晚晚飯吃得很高興。真的從沒想過印尼菜原來可以如此豐盛精緻。食物以外,如許多人所講,三位太子爺的確幾靚仔
因為太喜歡這餐廳,剛才上網搜尋了一下,知道他們3人如何同心協力把垂死的老字號挽救過來,事事親力親為,也嘗試創新,upgrade了老套的印尼菜。不知道報道有多少是真情多少是煽情,但撇開背景,單純作為一個食客,我的確從這個雅緻的環境,花巧同時踏實的有heart菜式裡,感受到年輕老板對這店投入的熱情和愛。

题外话/补充资料: 其實嚟之前朋友send咗openrice個地址俾我,見到啲食評好參次,都有d想轉場,不過食完真係覺得好在無,可能避開冇叫食評話麻麻嘅菜式,有機會都真係好奇想試下!因為我好快就會帶我屋企人再食過! 另外,同中環好多餐廳一樣, 佢地有啲waitors係唔識中文嘅, 我英文麻麻就叫香港人waitor叫菜,費事雞同鴨講.

Obviously some thought went into making food presentation more appealing. Food still could do with some improvements but overall an improvement over the old days. The second visit was not as fortunate. We were give a window side table, which was nice. The restaurant was not full. Next table to us was one of the owners or a son who works there. He was talking very loudly on the mobile phone. I asked the waitress to ask him to tone it down as it was really spoiling our dinner. She was a bit afraid to do this, which gives you an idea of how well they take suggestions, and how much they value giving guests an enjoyable dining experience. Or not. I suggested to the waitress he could be asked to move to another empty table, or go back to conduct his business phone calls in the office. After about 10 more minutes of this, he walked away, only to be replaced by another lady, also talking loudly on the phone to some contractor. It was about some new branch they are planning and dissatisfaction with the contractor. Then the man came back and they talked loudly about carpet cleaning. Not the best topic to dominate our dinner, as anyone can imagine.

As to the food:
Corn cake - so much flour was used as filler the whole thing was soggy and fluffy, had no texture, much less the taste of corn. This was definitely a lot worse than the old days. Nice presentation but then so what if the food is not up to scratch? How much does corn cost anyway?
Shrimp cake - same problem, and no taste of shrimps.

Nasi Goreng - soggy. Tasteless shrimps inside, which was annoying because we had to pick around them.

Fish in banana leaf and chilis - This is a rather large fish, but they toned down the chilis. Passable but not brilliant.
Ox tongue - Arguably the worst dish of all, on account that the low quality of the ox tongue. I don't know what it is but the textile is slimy and disgusting. I love ox tongue so this was hardly the first time I had this dish. Must have been frozen for a long time. Did they get a basement bargain of this stuff? I took one bite and left it. My friend said the same thing and he loves Indonesian dishes and ox tongue too. And this is a specialty on the menu.

Well, too bad. Hong Kong can do with more ethnic restaurants. Good ones, anyway.

左1是牛尾湯,我很喜歡這個湯,牛尾燜得拾到好處,湯很有鮮味。左2是栗米餅,顧名思義是栗米和豬肉做成的香煎肉餅,這個是可以用生菜包著吃,由於煎得很香脆再加上生菜的包一包,減少了熱氣,喜歡吃香口食物的人絕不可錯過。中間那一道,根本不用我介紹,是最著名的喇沙,一來到已被我們瓜分了,那隻大蝦的鮮味我還記得,很可惜是不夠分,如果人多的話要多點幾個才行。那樣便不用搶蝦了
。右2是食過番尋味的銀鱈魚,我本身就很愛吃銀鱈魚,只要那間餐廳有銀鱈魚,我就會點。可惜的是,很多地方也會把銀鱈魚變成沒有味的魚,很多時候要靠點醬汁來調味。幸好,這裡並沒有令我失望,銀鱈魚的鮮味仍是保留著,單是這道菜已叫我想一吃再吃。右1是茄子,很入味但又沒有很油的感覺,我更配上充滿椰香的飯
,這樣的配搭確實很不錯。

這個牛肉串燒充滿肉汁,而且肉質很淋,如果喜歡吃串燒的人絕不可以錯過,因為不知道是否有祕製的醬汁的關係,真的很好味道。
今次的晚餐確實很有驚喜,連本身不太吃印尼菜的我也打算下次再來試另一些菜式。

P.S.原來這裡是米芝蓮推介食府,難怪餐廳的設計,服務的態度以及食物的質素都達到星級水準。大家來這裡用膳時除了享受食物的美味,更可留意一下餐廳的設計,感受一下店主用心經營的藝術。
