AFter church Ashley Rd. is a great place for some lunch and lo and behold, a new ramen joint.
Just to let you know, this is Hakata ramen, that means only tonkotsu flavored and the noodles are thin. As a self professed Ramen snob and expert, I would really have to give this ramen place a big thumbs up. First, the ambience is great as it tries to create a real ramen joint like place with stools.. I can just imagine all the japanese business men. I noticed no one welcomed us in Japanese "IRASSHAIMASE!" style, but my girlfriend was good on the quiet. I immediately noticed there was real japanese writing on the board outside so I could assume it was quite authentic.
ok so to the food. theres only two choices... tonkotsu ramen, and shrimp flavored tonkotsu ramen. I opted for the shrimp. What i got was a wonderful shrimp tasting pork bone broth soup, although the shrimp isn't too overpowering. they have spicy bean sprouts and other flavors to make it more spicy, but i opted for just bean sprouts. theres also grinded garlic which gives it a real nice kick. the soup is rich and thick, but not lots of fat pieces which is good. if you get the combo, it comes with one of those runny eggs (although it could have been a little more cooked, imo). generous portions of noodles, meat, and vegetables. I was quite full.
The gyouza are lousy... meat was mushy and no vegetables. i wouldn't recommend these. there is also some free cold barley tea which is really nice during summer (but cold during winter).
So to sum it up, the noodles are too thin, but you can ask for harder noodles. the broth is really good, rich, and creamy, but not overlypowering on the flavor. you can add garlic, sesame seeds, and spicy bean sprouts which is good. this place is probably the best ramen ive had in hong kong. Better than Butao. But dont beleive me, go give it a try.
