適逢Restaurant Week,$198一個lunch Set, 無加一,見到d review幾好, 決定去試下。前菜有4款(枝豆、無骨雞翼、三文魚泡芙、波菜)加牛油果卷物。比較特別係三文魚泡芙,原本三文魚大家食開都無乜驚喜,不過連脆卜卜的泡芙一齊食,就係一個成功既fusion. 波菜味道唔會好特別,不過賣相幾靚,睇得出d 嘢食係well-designed.主菜我揀咗Flank Steak。牛下腹既部份無乜脂肪,當然唔會食到入口即溶既感覺;不過同出面食到既flank steak比較,嚟度都處理得唔錯。甜品係柚子批,味道清新。總括嚟講,我絕對會推介呢間餐廳。

The sesame sauce is really rich, and not as sweet as sesame sauce that you can buy in supermarkets, haha! I quite like this. Sesame sauce and spinach - the perfect match!⠀

Quite nice overall. Good flavours, and good looking, haha. It would be better if the prawn tempura inside can be bigger tho. The combination of tempura, avocado, and spicy mayo is refreshing!⠀

So, now it comes to the main course. I am really surprised by the portion and quality of both dishes.⠀

The steak is nearly medium. It's partly tender, but some are less tho. But it's quite beefy! Good enough for this price.⠀
However, beef with too much salt on top is really salty...(tho it's ok for me)⠀
Wasabi mashed potatoes is very smooth, yet not so "wasabi" tho.⠀
牛扒有些部位有筋,但整體都算軟稔,牛味不算很重,但一點都不弱,⠀

Replacing seaweed with tapioca puff, that creates a crunchy outer layer. Salmon is sliced into dices and marinated with yuzu-kosho and wasabi, which gives an appetizing sourness and spiciness.

原本應該係天婦羅蝦卷,但天婦羅蝦售罄,所以用三文魚代替。我哋對此比較失望,因為同頭盤嘅三文魚泡芙重疊,即使配上牛油果仍略嫌欠缺特色。
As prawn tempura was sold out, it is replaced with salmon. Even though the salmon roll is served with avocado, it is still disappointing due to the duplication with the starter.

側腹牛扒原屬味道濃烈的部位,但依到嘅側腹牛扒味道較淡,而且質感好韌。薯蓉混入芥末頗為特別,令到味道冇平時咁滯。
Flank steak is supposedly tasted intense, but this flank steak is definitely a mild one, with a tough texture as well. Mashed potatoes are mixed with wasabi, which makes it tastes unique.

柚子醬嘅酸味好強烈,而配上烤過嘅白朱古力嘅甜味令人感覺好清新。雖然份量幾大,但係酸酸甜甜嘅味道令人不自覺咁食曬,可以話係一個完美嘅結局。
The sourness from the yuzu jam is rich, and it tastes refreshing together with the roasted white chocolate. Although the portion is quite large, you would unconsciously consume the whole pie due to the exquisite flavour. This yuzu meringue pie is a perfect ending for the meal.

Sashimi and Sushi is a must for Japanese meal,just trust the chef selection,they’ll bring u the best fish of the day.


Actually some other dishes on the menu are not bad but I was quite impressed by this 4 dishes.

• @honjohk is a new Japanese resto by @piratagrouphk. The restaurant displays an eclectic collection of curios from around the world and serves food with international influences marrying Japanese techniques. It is a more upscale branch of its sister restaurants. Loving the appropriately extravagant interior of Honjo - we had a great time here!

與朋友們到西環的Honjo享受聖誕大餐,餐廳以日本菜和創意料理為主,裝潢走西式風格,乘電梯上去一開門就是它們的bar,未等到位前可以先享用飲品,裡面餐廳部分比我想像中更華麗一點,氣氛不錯。食物方面,整體水準高,大部分都是我喜歡的料理,不過本來日本菜就是我喜歡的類型。推介燒牛肉、圖二的白魚刺生,忘了是什麼魚,吞拿魚刺身和壽司,圖四的三文魚酥,圖五的拖羅牛油果醬炸魚柳,炸蝦天婦羅,特別喜歡它們家的海鮮料理,無論刺身或是做成炸物。也點了兩塊牛扒,一塊是澳洲牛,一塊是日本和牛,感覺日本和牛比較對我胃口,不過兩塊也做得很好吃。反正不特別推介圖十的鹽焗魚,不難吃,但就是沒什麼特別。

I would not recomend this restaurant to anyone. We were only been advised that there was a dining time limit of 2 hours at the restaurant, despite we ordered their tasting menu. It was completely not enough time to finish all dishes. We were very disappointing with our dining experience here with the price we paid (around 1k per person).

The two of us came here for a birthday celebration. Service was spectacular throughout the meal. We ordered a couple of small bites and skipped the sashimi & sushi as we thought we’d focus on more of the fusion items. Everything was great and we especially loved the hamachi carpaccio! The only thing we didn’t like was the chicken. It was cool but flavour and texture wise wasn’t very impressive at all.

新店來噶,食日本菜噶店來噶,環境真系超級好,好有格調,燈光好柔和,還有好優美噶音樂,系果度用餐簡直系一種享受,吾單單只有環境好,滴餐具擺設都十分精緻,真系令人賞心悅目,而菜式就唔系甘多選擇啦,可能系新店噶原因,未開發更多噶新菜式,不過距度度菜都好好味,真系色香味俱全,值得一試。

之後是三種sashimi -sake, hamachi, akami. 不得不提一句akami十分好吃,口感軟嫩不油膩,非常鮮美!
Short rib tempura and broccolini tempura 這兩道一起乘上非常喜歡。short rib天婦羅已經調過味道,肉質也很嫩,第一次吃牛肉天婦羅,非常好吃。西蘭苔天婦羅也是第一次吃,炸過後根部juicy,頭部清脆,很有意思。

Cherry and umeboshi curd with vanilla ice cream. 果醬配凝乳,口感像冰鎮過的cheesecake。果醬有一點點過甜,不過還是非常的好吃。

總體來講食物味道還可以,可能剛開,像牛肉口感不爛這類問題還是可以改善的。菜品、用料可以看出非常非常的用心,可以看出是下過心思的。環境也非常不錯,感覺可以再來。

This has been just opened, it is our first time, ground floor was just a reception desk and restaurant is on 1/F. Entrance is the bar but with a long wide table, it makes it very difficult to move around or sit more people, wrong design! Surprisingly the restaurant is very good size, it was jam packed, we got the semi-private room with a curtain dividing us from the main area. We had veg tempura, wagyu beef was amazing with some crunchy texture from grill quinoa, spinach with sesame sauce dressi

We had veg tempura, wagyu beef was amazing with some crunchy texture from grill quinoa, spinach with sesame sauce dressing for a bit too overload with sauce but good, yellow tail sashimi was delicious, fried chicken was yummy, grill califlower was so good too. Everything was very good & all our friends loved it. Definitely will come back and also try the other casual Japanese restaurant, TMK in the basement.

After eating at their sister restaurant TMK one floor down in Hollywood Centre last week, they gave us a coupon to try Honjo, and we happily obliged. A different vibe than TMK, Honjo looks a lot more like Stockton or the Optimist (no surprise as they’re both under Pirata) than any typical Japanese setting. The sushi counter at the end of the room is the only clue that you’re not in an Italian restaurant. Much larger than it looks, it has all kinds of booths, separated tables, and rooms for romantic meals or private events. I found Honjo classically warm and inviting:

The second thing you notice when you enter is how many staff there are. There must be about 8 servers and 5-10 hosts/managers walking around. Further, since Honjo is relatively new, even the suit-wearing host/managers often defer to their actual manager for food explanations, making it a lot of faces you'll see over the course of your meal. Apart from this, the service is great, and I suppose at full capacity (it was about 70% full the day we went), the extra hands would be useful. There was one moment to highlight: as people do, we ate the Hamachi dish from the side closest to us, so by the end, all the remaining fish was on the far side of the plate. Obviously, it wasn’t a stretch at all for us to reach over, but one of the staff came over specifically to rotate the plate so the food was closer to us. I was impressed by the attention to detail (or are there just too many staff wandering around?)

It’s a hodge-podge. While most of their dishes are a mix of fusion and new-Japanese food, they include quite standard sushi/sashimi options, at mid-high tier sushi restaurant prices. I’m sure this won't be only us, but we had no interest whatsoever in trying sushi here. Eating specialty foods (e.g. pizza, sushi) in places that don't specialize in them is rarely a good idea; in other words, there are a lot of other places where I’d rather have traditional sushi at these prices (260 for 7 pieces?). Here, we'd expect everything, including sushi, to be a bit unique or inventive; I was surprised that they didn’t offer classic/modern options for sushi as they do for Tempura.

The drinks menu is EXTENSIVE – 6 pages of cocktails and spirits, and a much longer sake and wine list. You won’t be lacking for options here.
One question though, for both Honjo and TMK - why are highballs so expensive? (they start at $140 here) They’re supposed to be easy drinking; originally designed as a substitute for beer. In Japan, even Chita highballs (far from a great whiskey), are priced just slightly higher than beer, not double the price. Bizarre.

Basically a fried calamari dish; amusing because the server described this as "something a bit different." Saved from mediocrity by being nicely fried in a light batter (supposedly rice?) and a tart calamansi dip. The lime-based acidity goes well with the chewy, savory squid. Overall though, nothing that interesting.

The best dish of the night for me – medium-thickness slices of Hamachi, with a small dollop of rocket butter (couldn’t taste the rocket very much, but the butter works), and a lively yuzu/soy mixture. The butter & oily fish combination you'd expect to be heavy, but along with the yuzu, the edges of each slice are flecked with Yukari (a pickled shiso furikake), which gives each bite some zing. This dish has just the right amount of complexity to give the usually lethargic hamachi some real character.

The worst dish of the night. While they do fall off the bone, the ribs feel more braised than BBQ’d, missing any depth from smoke or charcoal.  While they are okay-moist, the fat and meat don’t meld together as in the best bbq, and they just kind of separate lamely when you chew them. Further, the sauce they’re basted in tastes like any old American BBQ sauce (the slightest hint of tamarind), and you can’t feel any Japanese influence here at all. Finally, they are incredibly salty – you don’t notice it at first because the sauce is so tangy, but you’ll be reaching for the water before you even finish chewing. I assume since the sauce is fine, that the ribs have been marinated in too salty a brine/marinade. The best part of the dish was the pickled radish, which says a lot. Don’t order these, especially at $180.

This is a cool dish. Filleted and then fried, they serve the entire fish including its skeleton, which then becomes an edible serving plate. Taste-wise, I think the karei was too mild of a fish for tempura, as it needs to hold its own against the batter and oil – seabass, whiting or ayu would probably have stood out more. I get the thematic restrictions though; the fish needs to be a medium sized fish that can be turned into its own plate, which limits what they can use. In any case, my friend liked the flavour, so maybe it’s me. Texture-wise, it was fried nicely, no easy feat given how many pieces there are, with the insides still juicy and the batter still crunchy. The tentsuyu sauce though wasn’t great –it seems they overdid the soy sauce to dashi ratio, resulting in it being a too heavy/strongly-soy mixture; a poor offset to the fish. A much better complement is the “salt flight” they also offer:

Himalayan pink, Green Tea and… something else I forgot. These were great in small sprinkles with the fish. Overall, not a cheap dish at $290, but a cool concept and tasty if you have a bigger group – was too much fried stuff for the two of us.

We wanted to try one more thing, but nothing else really appealed to us, apart from the rice and noodles we were too full for. We did opt for their Red Bean and Almond cake:

Tastes like a poppyseed or honey sponge cake, covered by azuki beans and red bean cream, with a side of homemade green tea ice-cream. I liked that it wasn’t too sweet, and the spongy cake is great at absorbing the ice-cream and red bean sauces. A relatively light and satisfying dessert to end the meal.

Overall, we had 4 real dishes, and while the Ribs and Squid were strangely disappointing, the Hamachi and Karei were genuinely interesting and worth ordering again. If Honjo's menu could consistently deliver this level of flavor and innovation, it would justify the prices they charge – the four dishes + dessert came out to $830 for the two of us with no drinks, and we were barely satisfied. I.e. it’s not cheap. Expect a full meal to run you 500-600 p.p. at a minimum. 

Right now, Honjo is a work in progress, between the manic number of staff and the hit-or-miss menu. There are a lot of things to like though; the service is great, the restaurant is beautiful, and you can tell there are some real chefs in the kitchen. With time, I expect them to clean up their recipes and get the food where it needs to be at this price point. Right now though, I can’t wholeheartedly recommend it, and an OK seems to be the right rating. Worth keeping an eye on.
