I've been to this institutions many times. It does the job each time.
Probably one of the best dining room in town.
The food is incredibly beautifuly presented, the service is great - almost too present sometimes - and the price is quite steep but this is not a cantine, more like a special occasion thing.
We went there with my wife and shared the salmon and caviar for appetizers (1,288 hkd) after the ballet of much appreciated amuse bouche. That must have been the highlight of the night, the salmon literaly melts in your mouth and has this subtle smoked flavor (it is home smoked with cedar wood). The caviar comes on the side in a caviar box on a bed of king crab. The combination of the two is perfect, I absolutely love this dish eventhough you can certainly expect that for that price.
Then i had a cote de boeuf (698 hkd) and my wife had the lamb (668 hkd), both coming from the famous french butcher Hugo Desnoyer.
I was slightly disappointed by the cote de boeuf which comes with a bordelaise sauce. The meat was obvisouly medium rare as i ordered but the portion was quite small (i'd say like 1/3 of what you would expect from a cote de boeuf in a regular french brasserie) and had quite a bit of fat. It overall lacked seasonning and i feel that with such a nice piece of meat we could have gotten better.
The lamb on the other hand was great, perfectly cooked, fairly generous in comparison with the cote de boeuf and obviously very nicely presented with some peas and mint.
Then we had a cheese plate (288 hkd) composed of french and english cheeses and served with some truffle honey, to finish with a wonderful grand marnier souflee (228hkd).
Both were very satisfying.
In terms of setting, the table are very very well spaced, something you can get only in a Hotel restaurant in Hong kong nowadays. It is quiet and refined.
As for the drinks, we had two glasses of champagne (Ruinart) and two glasses of red wine recommanded by the wonderful sommelier.
So all in all, like i said, it does the job. Big time.
Bill: more than 5,000 hkd for two, service charge included with only two glasses of red.
You can imagine where that can bring you if you start getting some bottle of wine.
Is this pricey? Yes.
Is it worth it? I'd say yes.
Will I be back? Yes. On special occasions. As always.
