A number of food halls have sprouted up in recent times. These are basically food courts but more pricier. You don't get the usual fast food choices but restaurants that give you a more "fast food" version of their restaurant menu. Fast food but elevated.KIN Food Halls is one of these that have opened up. KIN Food Halls is one of these that have opened up. Located in Quarry Bay, it's a very large with seating spaced out. Gorgeous minimalist decor. Free water taps are found at stations with bowls and other extra tableware. But instead of the usual food court where the people working there are behind every kiosk so you can take a look at the food before you decide. Here it's not the case. Here you order from either their app or a touch screen menu. Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge but they do charge you 1% charge that is not written any where on the touch screen menu or their surrounding area. I even went on their social media pages and website and no information was given on this surcharge. One of my Instagram followers informed me that she thinks for a charity that stops hunger in Hong Kong but this she wasn't sure. Later KIN Food Halls explained on my instagram that it goes to Zero Food Print Asia which goes to local farms in order to help reverse climate change and support the local farming community. A far cry from what the other person guessed. They also told me it was optional donation. Something not clearly stated anywhere when I was paying. They also said it was explained on the app which I wasn't using. But I wish this was clearly written because after paying, I felt a bit confused and ripped off. If it was clearly written, I wouldn't have had those feelings. Hopefully, this will be rectified in the future when I write this?
Anyways .. moving on. The ordering menu is easy to use. It features various restaurants that you may have heard of and their fancied up food court creations. After ordering, you check the various tv screens on the wall to see which counter you pick up your order. Like an airport terminal, it will let you know your order is processing and when it's ready for pickup. My order took about 20 minutes. I came after lunch peak hour so I wonder how long it would be at peak hour? Because if I'm rushing during work lunch hour ... that's a long time for a food court. I guess in my mind, food court means ordering and snap ... it should be ready to eat. So, obviously this is all made to order.
A free drink was provided at another area of the food hall for every meal purchase. This was either a hot or cold oolong tea.
The food is really good though. But pricewise? For something I had to order myself, pick up myself and take my tray back to be cleaned up, I wondered .... I'm still at a food court. Yes, the food is higher quality and better prepared. But deep down ... it's still a food court. For this price, I could be served at a decent place in the Quarry Bay area. Which makes me wonder .. will I be back? Does things like this succeed?? Or are these just geared for certain people? Only time will tell.
