There are several reviews already and plenty of photographs of La Vache! on Open Rice.I'll attempt to highlight the key areas of praise and also some key areas of concern.Praise:- Simple fixed menu- Consistent steak cook- well executed Medium Rare that is warm throughout- Dinner plates are heated to a hot temperature prior to giving to diner. Its imparative this is done so food retains its heat. You can imagine putting a fresh cut hot steak on a cold plate. - Attentative wait staff- Bottomless
I'll attempt to highlight the key areas of praise and also some key areas of concern.
Praise:
- Simple fixed menu
- Consistent steak cook- well executed Medium Rare that is warm throughout
- Dinner plates are heated to a hot temperature prior to giving to diner. Its imparative this is done so food retains its heat. You can imagine putting a fresh cut hot steak on a cold plate.
- Attentative wait staff
- Bottomless fries and their delicious "house sauce" - a reiteration of bernaise sauce.
Concerns:
- the butter provided with the bread was stone cold and hard. A restaurant like this should pre-emptively bring out butter for bread a few hours before service to ensure that is is soft and easy to work with for consumption with the bread.
- House wine pricing. 78 HKD a glass for generic bottle that have been labeled as La Vache!
I am almost certain they source this generic wine from France at a very low cost. To charge a customer 78 HKD a glass, I feel, is unreasonable. I would have expected to pay 50-60 for a glass of this type of house wine, especially when it is displayed in bulk all over the restaurant.
Overall:
For 258 HKD + 10% svg charge, you do get a very respectable steak frites meal.
I was happy with the taste, cooking consistency, and service. Would repeat again but I would hold off on the generic house wine for 80 HKD a glass and go out for drinks afterwards.
