Green Salad with chopped Walnuts,  Radish and a Vinaigrette dressing -
Part of the whole Steak package for $258.   Although this was eaten as a starter here,  to me it should be eaten as an appetizer then some are at least to be  left to accompany the main steak course.   That's what the original L'Entrecote does in Paris and Geneva.

Tart Tartin Cocktail -
This was one of their signature drinks here,  borrowing from the apple pastry's name with similar inspiration and also slightly spiced up with cinnamon!   This was pretty enjoyable albeit a bit on the sweetish side personally.   It will be a wintery drink and hence I ordered it amongst many other choice..   ~  7/10

Our Steaks Arrived! -  with a Paper Tag reminding you the level of doneness you had ordered
This is 2 x 10oz portionings of Steaks for 2 people show here.    They are kept heated on a very thin steel plate and a singularly lit candle.   *Personally I don't think this idea works from a Physics point of view,  as the steel plate dissipates heat almost instantly like a CPU Heat ink or an Intercooler and which the centralized small candle can't keep up heating back all the spots.   It actually makes the Steaks go colder quicker this way especially when the bottom of the thin steel plate is exposed to more air..   I know the original L'Entrecote's do it too but they use a much more powerful heat source underneath.  :@    Sounded gimmicky and thoughtful enough,  though I bet that in a cross Scientific experiment this isn't a very sound proposition.

Steaks cooked Well to Our Intention -
When these arrived I thought they weren't too Rib-Eye like,  but somewhere between the muscles adjoining the Rib-eyes with the Sirloin along the progessional muscle from front to back.  The steak tonight is more like a Contre-Filet,  which is also defined under the Entrecote correctly but more towards the back Sirloin side.  So don't expect to see Rib Eye Cap muscles or Eye Muscle on every piece of beef strip here...

Individual USDA Prime 'Entrecote' 10Oz -
When served on the warmed plate directly it performs better in retaining the heat than the thin plate above - it's pure physics.    The meat flavour was medium-strong,  and it wasn't as oily as I had anticipated and tasted more like a Sirloin steak but with the correct shape of an Entrecote cut.   Thicker than what I get in France by default,  this was a subtantially sized steak.  It's not melt in your mouth but guess what?  I like this as it's more reflective of real European steaks ...    ~  7/10

Unlimited Fries - included in that $258 bill
Being freshly fried by the batches,  these can't possibly go wrong,  and if your 1st batch isn't right then ask for more during the 2nd or 10th fresher batch at your own discretion...   A fellow foodie friend who visited separately thought the fries were fried at too high an oil temperature and the outside was too hard.  I think he has a point...   I think these were good but can also be better still as I think my well-trained chef friend was right!  ~  7/10

With Hong Kong's unpredictable humidity,  or is that only an excuse sometimes coz France can be humid too with no dry seasons as well..  This was 1stly caramelized outside and it definitely did preserved the crispiness of the choux pastry.  Everyone's favourite.  ~  8/10

Paris Brest with Hazelnut and Creme Patissier,  Peanuts and Almonds -  $88
This came highly recommended by Kathy,  one of the managers here and who used to work in Motorino and Boqueria.   She was right,  this was very addictive and considering this has been sitting on the dessert trolley all night,  it was still quite fresh compared to many Paris Brest versions in HK.   I have had much worse in Paris !   ~  8/10

The $258 + 10% gets you French Bread,  a Salad,  a 10Oz USDA Prime 'Contre-filet' Entrecote Steak and a Bearnaise style sauce tweaked with over 10 Ingredients,  plus Unlimited Fries.
House wines by the bottle are $348 each and imported from a boutique winery from Bordeaux.    It is definitely Bang for Your Buck material and recommended if you want to satisfy your weekly steak cravings!!    The sauce might not be the chicken livered version which makes up the original Cafe de Paris butter,  but it was quite enjoyable in a lighter tangy way...   Also note that during Xmas Eve and Xmas Day there will be no extra surcharges.  Crap, I just remembered this myself during the re-edit and you will be fighting with me on a table that day !!  :S

Once you walk pass the red sign, you take a few steps to descend into the restaurant which is located in the basement. The decor was prominently Parisian with paintings of famous sights of Paris as well as red and white checkered table cloths. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant where many two seater tables were set up against the mirror. Unfortunately it was really cramped as the tables were placed really close to each other - to the point I could barely get out as I was sandwiched between 2 tables and I'm already pretty skinny.

There is no menu here as the only item they serve is steak frites. The placemat on the table says it all. For $258 per person, you get steak, fries, and salad. When you place your order, they will ask you how you want your steak and mark it on your placemat. My "M" stood for medium.

They did have a drinks menu as they have a big bar right in the middle of the restaurant. The drinks menu was pretty cute as it looked like a drawing book with scribbles of drawings on each page. They had their own Parisian-inspired cocktails as well as wines. I'm guessing they can probably whip up anything you want since they have a full blown bar.

Water-Lillets ($88) - the drink that caught my eye was the water-lillets, described as a monet-inspired blend of Lillet Blanc aperitif, gin, and creme de violette. It certainly looked pretty and sounded fancy but tasted anything but. The taste of gin was too strong with nothing to balance it out. J said it tasted like detergent...

Trimmed Entrecote Steak with French Fries - our steak arrived together on a metal plate which was placed over a candle holder to help preserve the temperature. The server then placed about half of our already sliced steak onto a hot plate in front of us along with some fries and some of their special house sauce. The steak was cooked nicely as it was juicy and succulent. Some parts were a bit overcooked but overall had a good proportion of fat ratio. The sauce was a bit mild as it didn't provide much of a kick in taste compared to other steak frites I've had in the past. The french fries were pretty solid as they were nice and crunchy. They come around to distribute more french fries if you had finished your fries and wanted more.

Conclusion - the steak fries here were pretty good for the price and value. The execution was solid, though I felt something was amiss as I was just not that impressed or wowed. Maybe it's because of the lack of choice which can be a good thing or a bad thing I guess. I mean you basically have to love steak frites to come here because that's all they've got. The other thing was the service. I usually love desserts yet I didn't get any here because no one offered to showed us their dessert cart. I saw a big dessert cart being wheeled around but surprisingly after we finished our meal, they didn't ask us if we wanted desserts or not. So after waiting for a awhile without any service, we didn't feel it like anymore and got the check.

There are no menus at La Vache!, but rather a description of the meal (salad and steak frites) written on these adorable placements depicting Parisian scenes. When our server came to our table, we simply told her how we liked our steak (I like mine medium and my boyfriend likes his medium rare). We also ordered some cocktails - I tried the Monet Lillet, which has gin and Lillet, and he tried The Bouleardier, which is like a Negroni with Bourbon. Both were delicious and felt very French. A great way to start the meal!

Dinner begins with slices of fresh baguette and butter, then a nice green salad with toasted walnuts. The greens were fresh and the walnuts were nutty and flavourful. This is definitely not your average green salad! When our steak arrived, our server portioned some of the meat on our plates and placed the remaining on a hoisted plate in the centre of the table with a heat candle below it to keep warm. Our plates were completed with some fresh "frites" and a delicious "special sauce," which was served on the side & promptly poured all over my steak — I just couldn't get enough. To pair with the meal, they recommended that we try the La Vache! wine, a red wine made specifically by the restaurant to go with their steak. I must admit, the pairing was fantastic!
After dinner, this glorious dessert cart came rolling towards our table. We were really full, but just could not resist all the French pastries & decided to order an éclair and a berry clafoutis. Both were insanely delicious. The perfect end to a satisfying meal.
At the end of of the meal, I thought we had gone a little all out for a Monday night (cocktails, steak, wine, dessert!), but when the bill arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the meal was quite reasonable considering the feast we just had. We will definitely be back – next time, maybe we will bring friends so we can try more desserts!
