The weather was getting cold. When that happens, my tummy turns to hotpot. I'm always on the look out for new hotpot places to try so boyfriend and I decided to come here.醉胡爐 (English name: Wulu Restaurant) is located in Tsim Sha Tsui, right in the heart of many Korean restaurants. The layout has a large (and I mean LARGE) bar in the middle with tables surrounding it. They had lighted balls which were ... different. But even with the lighted balls above, it was a bit dark.
Menu is Chinese only. They have no English menu. But you choose hotpot items by checking off what you want.
It seemed they had a huge selection.
They also have various toppings to make a sauce at $22 per person. Not a large selection but at least the basics.
As I can't eat very spicy, boyfriend chose the coconut chicken hotpot soup ($268). A really fancy looking copper pot was placed in front of us.
In the pot, there was chicken meat, coconut slices and golgi berries. First the staff will stir fry it. Then they will open a fresh young coconut and pour the juices inside.
This is then followed by a dash of Chinese rice wine that is then lit to burn off the excess alcohol.
At the end, a pure coconut broth is poured into the pot and let boil for a moment to cook. And then we ready for eating!!!!
First I want to say ... this was a really good broth. It was rich in coconut and the chicken meat was moist and tender. So, try not to have them dilute it as they use regular chicken broth and all that rich coconut flavor just disappeared.
Various Meat Platter ($368). This included a variety of meat including ox tongue, brisket, rib cubes and wagyu. The meat were really excellent quality with a highlight being the rib cubes. Perhaps due to the others being such stand outs, the wagyu didn't shine through at all.
Cheesy Cuttlefish Balls ($49). These were firm and bouncy. But to me there wasn't enough cheese. It appeared they mixed it into the batter instead of one huge chunk like some places. But the cuttlefish meat was pretty good.
Tong Ho ($48). Glad I got my big basket of vegetables! This was a large portion. Leaves were fresh and soaked up the soup very well.
Sashimi Geoduck ($98). They had a promotion for sashimi geoduck. The waiter kept stressing this so I guess we became obliged to order it. It was pretty decent. Fresh and sweet.
The soup is definitely the star of this place. Rich and flavorful. So, if you really want excellent soup base, this is the place for you. Prices are a bit more expensive than most places but quality of ingredients was quite good. Seating is spacious though not well lit.
