A ramen fan, a new ramen shop has caught my eye. This is 金鶴拉麵 (English name: Kane Tsuru Ramen). What they serve is chicken broth based ramen. Now, there are already two other chicken based broth ramen shop in Hong Kong (Torihana Tei and Zagin Soba). Both very good and one of my favorite ramen shops, so I was curious to try this one.金鶴拉麵 is located in Jordan. A small shop with a drawing of a crane on the window. Menu is in Chinese only but they have photos of all their food. They not only serve chicken base broth ramen but eel rice and curry rice as well. A bowl of ramen costs $98 (a price that is far cheaper than Zagin Soba) and you can choose between just chicken, just pork or both.
As we were there during lunch, they also offer spicy, shio and shoyo ramen.
Boyfriend and I shared a plate of fried chicken ($33). These were good. Meat was juicy though one piece was a bit undercooked. A bit of salt was provided for flavor. Though not really needed as the coating was well seasoned.
Boyfriend had the chicken broth ramen with both chicken and pork ($98). For those that have been to Zagin Soba, it looks quite similar. They also have the same deep fried burdock. The difference here is that you get a choice of pork or chicken or both. The chicken meat here is slow cooked and a thicker slice than Zagin Soba's. Zagin Soba, I found their chicken to be thinly sliced to almost appear like ham. This place was a thick slice and very moist. You could actually taste the chicken meat more profoundly. The pork was good with a decent fat to meat ratio. The burdock was crispy and had a slight bitter taste. The broth was sweeter than Zagin Soba's and they provide a whole lot more broth. The egg was excellent. Yolk was runny but not too runny. It was lightly flavored. There was some bamboo shoots found in the bowl as well.
I had the tsukemen ramen ($138).
When this was placed before me, the smell of the chicken broth was even more pronounced as it was more concentrated.
The ramen was the thick kind (just as the broth version). Chewy and smooth. However, portion size was a lot. It seemed never ending.
It included a whole egg, two pieces of chicken and two pieces of pork.
After you finish this, you ask for a clear dashi broth to dilute the chicken broth to drink it up. After doing this, it tasted just like the broth my boyfriend had.
A welcome addition to the Hong Kong ramen scene. Portions were generous. Would return again if in the Jordan area.
