Company dinner 12 Jan, 2008. We have reserved a private room which has minimum charge of $20K.
It's a restaurant, so let's talk about food first. It's Japanese fusion style. We had ordered a tasting menu priced at $700. Taste? Its quality is worth $300 at most (I'll actually give it a $230, the extra $70 is given to two to three dishes which taste better than the others). If you eat out a lot, you know what I mean.
There is an assorted sashimi and the taste and freshness is just above "Genki". It's more or less like those in "Wara Wara". Only the tuna is "acceptable" (of course not as in $700 quality).
There is also a dish of beef. The beef? I couldn't tell I'm eating beef except from the look. All I can taste is the sauce.
Sushi roll, the stuffing is alright, but the rice is just like those machine made sushi you have in Genki.
Deep fried tofu, very very salty. It tastes even worse than those you have at chinese restaurant. Luckily, they still use Japanese tofu, not the chinese one. But it does not have any taste of soy. You can do it better than them if you purchase the tofu from City!Super and deep fry it yourself.
Peas is considered above average in this meal.
Pan-fried cod, Tempura, taste average. Those in 火間土is much better.
The dessert is really the best in this meal. The banana cake and European brownies is good, but the ice-cream is simply like the sorbert you can get anywhere.
Let's talk about the service.
This is a restaurant in a 5-star hotel, but the service is like a no-star restaurant.
We had booked tasting menu for 20 people. but we had only 19 at the end. So the "manager" came and ask us if we still keep 20-people portion. We said no and she kept arguing with us and kept reminding us that there is a minimum charge. WE KNOW! We told her that we would order something else. It has been a while of argument before she back off.
The way they serve has a huge problem. The tables were arranged in L shape and we had different number of people sitting around a table, 5, 4, 3, 2, 5. You know what? They serve the same portion of food to every single table! Meaning that 2 persons shared the same size of dish as 5 persons! We have questioned that why it is served this way and that bloody waitor simply argued with us that "THEY HAVE ALREADY ARRANGED THE PORTION"!
Their menu is also damn misleading. For the assorted sashimi, it's acutally 5 pieces from 7 selection. It's in small letters on the menu. And they never let us choose! Where the heck is the selection process?!
I really don't wanna talk about their service anymore. It simply pissed me off.
Last, drinks, they do have a very good selection of wine. We have picked three or four and they are all satisfactory. But there is one thing that I'm really disappointed about. I suppose that a 5-star hotel restaurant will serve the wine in a professional manner. Every bottle of wine should be opened for oxidisation before drinking (those who drink wine should know what I mean). But they didn't do so. They simply pour the wine from the bottle to your cup. What the heck?! This is really surprising!
The cocktail is not nice too. I don't know why this restaurant is so stingy about everything even when mising cocktail. I can't taste any alcohol in it and I need to request them to adjust! When I went to illy for cocktail, their cocktail is simply gorgeous. The taste of liquor and fruit forms a perfect balance. And this is what I had expected. But it turns out like to be like those from "Inn side out". And the price is a double of those from "Inn side out".
Conclusion: Don't go, or you'll regret.
