After 7 years in Hong Kong, La Paloma is the most real Spanish tapas chiringuito style restaurant I’ve ever come across here. I used to go to Spain all the time with my family until I left my home country (France – Basque Country area), and I’m usually quite picky with Spanish food. We had already been to La Paloma with friends about half a year ago and loved it back then already.
My husband and I booked a table for 2 for dinner and ordered 4 tapas dishes in order to enjoy a deal from The Entertainer (if you don’t have the Entertainer app, I recommend you to get it). We ordered 2 cocktails: La Paloma and Perompompero. We also had a glass of white wine each during the meal (Paco y Lola), which was quite nice.
Here is what we ordered on the food side of things:
IBERIAN CROQUETTES (HK$70)
Comes with 4 croquettes (Iberian because they have bits of Iberico pork mixed inside). Traditional croquettes in Spain are thicker but those were quite nice, with a crispy outside.
PULPO A LA GALLEGA (HK$120)
This dish is a specialty from Galicia (Northern region of Spain). The octopus was perfectly cooked, melting in your mouth, and each piece topping a tender potato disc. The spice amount was great too. This was definitely the highlight of our dinner.
CHORIZO DE PEPE (HK$90)
The chorizo served here is the thinner kind of sausage, and was cooked (probably baked) in a super tasty tomato sauce made with sherry wine and spices. It’s served with 4 pieces of bread that you can dip in the sauce. Very nice!
GAMBAS AL AJILLO (HK$110)
These big size shrimps were crunchy and cooked well (4 pieces), with a nice garlic butter sauce. It was nice but a couple of the shrimps tasted a little fishy. The traditional dish in Spain is smaller shrimp cooked with garlic and herbs in a ceramic dish. But La Paloma’s version wasn’t bad at all flavour wise.
For dessert, we ordered BOLLYCAO (HK$68), which we had ordered on our first visit. This dessert is amazing, and if we had been hungry enough we would have ordered another portion: 2 brioche balls stuffed with Nutella, quickly deep fried like Churros, and topped with some icing sugar. The brioche balls were still warm and oh so good!
The bill total was HK$788, which we got down to HK$628 with our tapas deal from The Entertainer. La Paloma has been super consistent with flavour and service, and I can say it is my favorite Spanish tapas restaurant in Hong Kong. No service charge, so you can give a tip at the end if you want. A mix of local Chinese and Western staff does the service, which I think makes a difference.
Go try this chilled and authentic tasty gem and I bet you will leave with a happy belly.
