The one thing that I love the most about Hong Kong. They make good char siu. I love char siu. Be it on it's own, scramble into egg, stuffed into a bao. I love char siu. I even eat it uncut and plopped it a plastic bag. It's that awesome to me.There are a lot of excellent places that make great char siu. But I've always wanted to try 食神叉燒 (English name: Chop Chop). There are a lot of excellent places that make great char siu. But I've always wanted to try 食神叉燒 (English name: Chop Chop). The pictures in magazines look droolworthy. My coworker, who lives across the street, said it was great. So, I headed there to give it a try.
Located on the street behind the AIA building near Fortress Hill MTR station is the restaurant with it's bright neon sign.
Like any Hong Kong roast meat shop, they have the goods hanging along the window.
They also have a schedule of when items are fresh out of the roaster.
But inside, it's not like your usual roast meat place. It has a much more hip design. With long communal tables and a bright neon sign in the back.
Menu is in English and Chinese and found on the wall. There is no 10% service charge. They offer rice and noodle sets with a choice of roast meat. All include a hot drink or upgrade to soup for only $8.
They also have cured meats with rice sets.
Boyfriend and I had two roast meat sets. It came on a nice wooden tray.
Each set comes with a basic bowl of Chinese soup. It's your typical dried bokchoy soup that you find in many roast meat shops when you ask for soup. It was fairly good. Savory without as much MSG detected like other places.
There was also this really nice sauce that was included. A sweet and savory dipping sauce that went well with everything. Boyfriend just dumped it into his rice and mixed it in.
Boyfriend had the Chop Chop pork belly rice set ($80). The pork belly was layered on top of a generous bowl of rice that was topped with a fried egg where the yolk was still runny and a side of steamed vegetables. This was extremely fat but boyfriend loved it. The pork belly was brimming with fatty juices and there was a good sear on the outside.
I had the Chop Chop Char Siu rice set ($58). It was heaven on a plate. The char siu was beautiful. It had a good distribution of fat. So good that you know is so unhealthy but you can't stop eating. The egg yolk was still runny and great for mixing it up into my rice so it got all the gooey goodness. The rice wasn't hard as well like other places I've been to. The vegetables were a good break from the fatty goodness.
As I had to go to work, I decided to add an order a crispy pork belly and soy sauce chicken combo ($108) to eat a bit and take the rest home as I had so much left over rice. The pork belly had a serious layer of fat. The skin was so crunchy, it was literally loud when I bit into it. It also wasn't overly salty. Something I dislike about crispy pork belly. That super salty part that is found t the bottom. The soy sauce chicken was insanely good. It was braised for so long, the fat from the skin was almost nonexistent. The meat was moist and juice. It was packed with flavor.
Really excellent place for roast meat. The char siu was one of the best! Prices reasonable enough as it does come in a set form. Portions were very generous. The place was really clean and modern. A place I feel more comfortable going to as roast meat places are usually not very clean with cramped seating. Boyfriend was skeptical going here as he felt good roast meat places should be gritty and cramped. But he was surprised that it was pretty good. Leaving I noticed they had afternoon tea sets for $48. I will definitely return again as I live close enough!
