This was a casual family gathering to try out contemporary cuisine in a nostalgic setting.The walk down the pathway to the restaurant is a reminiscence of the old British ammunition storage facility (英軍彈藥庫). I have a weakness for pasta with a cheese sauce - this is just ordinary pasta dish but the pecorino cheese made it tasty enough for me.

The angel hair with uni was a nice blend with a generous portion of sea urchin.
And the ravioli with Peking duck filling was a good combination but like I said nothing new to me.

Book 左好耐,終於book 到AMMO.佢個Location 都好特別,個裝修好華麗。入到餐廳有一種舒服的感覺。佢地個set lunch都唔算貴。188 per person + 10% service charge.我同朋友頭盤都係叫左smoke salmon salad個Smoke salmon 入面卷住咗D 生果。今到smoke salmon個味道特出來。咸咸甜甜好得意。主菜我叫左pasta with veal朋友話個樣好似乾炒牛河....其實食落口都唔差。pasta硬到剛剛好,但味道就沒什麼特別。還有veal有少,得個幾粒。非常珍貴。甜品唔記得個名,但好似Napoleon cake.沒有什麼特別

朋友話個樣好似乾炒牛河....其實食落口都唔差。pasta硬到剛剛好,但味道就沒什麼特別。還有veal有少,得個幾粒。非常珍貴。

My wife and I tried this restaurant for dinner on the weekend recently. We were quite excited especially given how much hype this restaurant has received and how long it takes to get a reservation (which I discovered later is due to how few tables they have). Unfortunately, after trying two appetizers, two entrees and two desserts, my wife and I agreed that this was a huge let down and we really did not enjoy ourselves. A restaurant like this, to be honest, would not survive in New York (where we're from) for more than 6 months.

Menu - very disappointing. Supposedly "tapas" but it definitely was not. Very small menu - maybe 8 - 10 items as appetizers + 8 - 10 pastas. No meat, no seafood, nothing. And definitely not many "tapas" as they like to claim. There is also a snacks selection part of the drinks menu which was fine but also very small. Definitely not what we expected at a supposedly decent restaurant

Food - also very disappointing. Appetizers were okay but definitely nothing special nor memorable. Pastas were terrible. Noodles were stuck together - just like the pasta I would make at home by myself when I was cooking for myself in college. Some noodles were undercooked b/c they were extremely chewy, almost crunchy. Cheese was clumped together which looked and tasted disgusting. My wife and I didn't finish our food b/c it was that bad.

(We actually just went to another restaurant afterwards to eat again since AMMO was quite bad)

Prices - not bad actually, quite reasonable. Much cheaper than what I had anticipated. Pastas maybe around $100 - 200. Appetizers around $80 - 150. Not unreasonable

Service - terrible. We had to ask several times for very basic items such as water, etc. Frankly, at a nice restaurant, we should not even have to ask! The waiter should monitor since that is his / her job. Also, the attitude was terrible - not friendly, very aloof, and really wanted to just write down food and move on. Definitely not the type of service we're used to and expect from a typical AVERAGE restaurant in New York. At the end, even to pay, nobody would come by to pick up my credit card. Waiters would clean up the table next to ours and despite waving my arms and saying "excuse me" several times, they still failed to acknowledge. I eventually walked up to the waiter and handed him the credit card directly. Again, this is not accepable for a restaurant that markets itself as being remotely "nice".

In conclusion, I would not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends since this would truly be a waste of time and money, In HK where there are many choices, I think you have many other better alternatives to choose from.

AMMO is one of the hottest and most talked about restaurant opening this year, and deservedly so! I finally had the chance to dine there with a few friends and left with great satisfaction of the food quality, staff service and overall dining experience.

AMMO is elegantly situated in a glass box in the new minimalist Asia Society Center in Admiralty, right across from Conrad Hotel. The restaurant is surrounded by lush greens and overlooks the natural landscape of the mountain, which makes you forget that you are in a concrete jungle and 5 minute away from Central. This is literally a heavenly oasis next to the CBD.

The décor is unlike anything in Hong Kong: Metallic touches, copper plated tables, green sofas, giant staircase chandeliers, etc could all be summed up in one word: “WOW”. It gives a retro-modern feel which fits perfectly with the story behind the historical site (former British explosives magazine) where AMMO is located.

After we were promptly seated at 7:30pm, we ordered a few tapas to share. One standout was the “Canaries red prawn with panna cotta” dish. A fresh and flavorful red prawn (cooked slightly raw inside, which was perfect) ingeniously placed on top of a milky bed of panna cotta, creating an exciting contrast of textures and flavors. For mains I had the “langoustine with lasagna” dish. Am not a typical lasagna fan but was tempted by the langoustine. Turned out to be a brilliant choice as the langoustine was cooked to perfection, as was the texture of the lasagna, which had chopped langoustine meat sandwiched between the layers.

For desserts I opted for the lighter choice which was the “Prosecco jelly with lime sorbet”. It came beautifully constructed in a martini glass. Just the right sweetness and acidity - a wonderful conclusion to a wonderful dinner.

The lights were dimmed around 9:30 and the music heats up, which gives a great ambiance for drinks so we lingered around after dinner and enjoyed a few cocktails before heading home full, tipsy and happy.

We’d heard the hype of this place before and had been intending to make reservations for dinner there, but as we were right next door, we figured that this would be a good time to pop in to check it out. The tables were full, but there was space for us at the bar.

We first noticed it is certainly ‘intimate’, but with a pleasing brass-themed aesthetic. The bar is quite beautiful, though the bar top is so high that the bar chairs are amongst the highest I’ve ever witnessed. Be careful sitting on these after your climb, lest you fall off and sprain an ankle or break a hip. And interestingly, there are few places to put your feet – a very important part of maintaining comfort when sitting up so high. I have broken my back a couple of times and the ability to adequately support my feet, high or low, is something I do value immensely as it adds tremendously to the comfort level and the ability to sit for relatively long periods.

After our ascent up the barstools, we ordered a glass of wine and a cheese board. The wine list is not bad and the cheese board is sufficient enough for two people (though my charming companion was emphatic that Parmesan cheese has no place on a cheeseboard – personally, it seemed a nice complement to the softs and I have bigger battles to fight in this world). The cheeseboard was adorned with a small cluster of grapes, but, surprisingly, the grapes were rather dirty and pathetic looking, so much so that I hand rubbed each clean with a napkin before giving them to my lovely companion.

A few minutes after the climb up to the seat of our barstools, we both could not help but notice how bright the interior was – which was so interesting, considering the detail to the aesthetic, they would light the place up like a warehouse. The lighting is so bright, it literally becomes painful. To the staff we hinted a few times, and then asked explicitly, to turn the lights down; however, they insisted that the lights would only go down after 930, once they stopped dinner service. Sadly for us, it was barely 730 and, on uncomfortable stools in such a painfully bright environment, we elected to just have the one drink and then leave lest our eyes start watering from discomfort.

I have to say, prior to this encounter it had not occurred to me to join or post on OpenRice, however, this brief encounter compelled me to join Openrice to share our experience. Had we waited two months to finally get a table, I think we would have been rather disappointed – granted, we did not eat the food (I cannot say how it tastes, but I can say that it cannot be missed under those lights). So, these tiny details could have made our experience much more enjoyable:

1. Softer/dimmer lighting

2. The barstools are tall and beautiful, but they could use a few pragmatic fixes to make them more comfortable

3. Definitely more attention to cleanliness/aesthetics of the tiny little grape clusters goes on a cheeseboard – (I mean, seriously, we’re only talking about 6-8 grapes here) – they shouldn’t look like the rejects of Wellcome.

4.Maybe a close proxy for Parmesan on the cheeseboard – but this is not a deal breaker.

With these little points addressed, I could see potentially going back before 9:30. However, without any changes, I would only stop by again if I was invited by someone else and didn’t have the opportunity to suggest something else or happened to be within 20 metres of the establishment after 9:30 and was craving an immediate glass of wine. Will certainly not wait five minutes, let alone two months, for dinner reservations – unless I hear they’ve addressed some of these tiny details.

This place is crazily booked out. Initially I was a bit sceptical about über-hyped restaurants, but after visiting I can understand why it's so coveted.

Firstly, the setting is at the top of the slope opposite the British Consulate, standing alone with a nondescript and dimly light entrance with the words "Ammo". Walking inside the former magazine gap, passing through a slated tile and pebbled walkway alongside the hollowed out space separating the restaurant and a marbled wall gives one an eerie sense of the historical significance this building holds. The restaurant is cozy and intimate, with tables spaced apart, decorated with the impressive bronze wall on one side where the bar is, and floor-to-ceiling glass panes on the other three. Two high tables are placed in the middle of the room, and on one side there are two comfy sofa booths with low tables which creates a chilled out, relaxed atmosphere. We were initially seated at the table right by the door, but after asking if we could move one further in, the staff happily obliged. The voice level was surprisingly well controlled, and at no point did we feel like we were in a packed restaurant. The waiters will attend when you beckon, but not otherwise. Wearing white gloves when serving us our food was a bit over the top, but it's harmless.

The drinks list was substantial to satisfy everyone's needs - a non-alc for the bf's mother, a G&T for the dad, a cold Asahi for the bf, and a lychee cosmo for me. The two kinds crusty bread were deliciously gobbled up with dabs of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We ordered several tapas to share, and each came on a spoon placed on a long narrow serving dish. The waiter informed us that each dish usually comes in three pieces, but they can bump it up for four for our group. Very thoughtful, and as service should be.

The sirloin steak with soy sauce was juicy, tender and expertly seasoned. The croquette was gooey with melted cheese inside and crispy on the outside. the Viet spring rolls with langoustine had a nice chunky piece of meat inside, but alas the skin was too thick and hard, and also tasted like it was refried. The suckling pig had a big chunk of fatty crackling which wasn't really my cup of tea, but the meat underneath was tender and moist, if somewhat salty. On top of that we ordered a crab salad on tomato puree from the appetisers, which had a delicate taste and chilled to the right temperature.

The mains are all pasta of different sizes and shapes. The three of them ordered the pork meatballs with parpadelle, while I had the ragout with fettucini. The pasta was al dente, had a deep yellow hue, which was complemented by the flavoursome but not overpowering ragout sauce, with the fresh herb keeping it fresh and simple.

As for desserts, we had two pan fried brioche with ice cream, a classic tiramisu, and a prosecco jelly. All but the jelly lived up to our expectations, unfortunately the jelly was a bit too gelatinous and stiff, therefore transforming the originally light dessert into a dense blob which even the ice cream scoop decorated with gold flecks could not save.

There was a chocolate mousse which, together with the lychee cosmo, were special items where by proceeds would be donated to the Asian breast cancer society. A great venue offering good food at reasonable prices with a social twist, what's there not to like? That is, if you can get a reservation.

We ordered a set lunch with mushroom tart, pasta with tomato sauce. We also ordered some a la car dishes- seared scallops, quail salad and pasta with ragu sauce.

Mushroom tart arrived first, it looked dry but again looks can be deceiving....wow, it is not dry -it is stone dry. When a knife cut into it, the whole thing crumples like cutting into a beggars chicken with a hammer. We had to send the dish back and graciously, they replaced stone tart with the daily soup which was barely tasty with drops of balsamic vinegar added.

Scallop dish was again very average, served only lukewarm with unnamed slices of veggie. Quail was cooked crispy on the outside which looked pitiful on very small portion of green that can be counted with 5 fingers...stingy portion...

The two pasta were ok with the pasta with ragu sauce was the better of the two. Pasta was fresh but there is room for improvement on the sauces. Tomato sauce was so diluted which can not stay on the pasta and we had to spoon the sauce from the bottom of the plate many times before finishing the dish...

Lunch set came with coconut creme brulee and coconut ice cream. Good cup of cappuccino was the finale to our very anticipated but disappointing meal.

The fish soup tasted just ordinary, lack of distinguishable favors. The vegetable soup? Milder than the typical Minestrone.

The tuna tagliolini again is lack of favor. Al dente? in a way. The tuna compose and the sauce are also lack of taste, if not character.

The uni angelhair is better, given there are uni. But if you are a sushi fan, the uni is not in its best condition.

The apricot mouse is a fail. It can't be a mouse given the texture is close to being a condensed paste.

Overall, over priced, over rated. But a nice place to see, and to be seen.

Today we tried the set lunch which is a three-course including Appetizer, Main Course and Dessert.

Appetizer: Sweet Japanese prawn with Cherry Gazpacho.
This was a good, refreshing summer appetizer. The sweet japanese prawn is slightly undercooked similar to the sashimi you find in Japanese places, but retains its sweetness. This was surrounded by a chilled, very light tomato soup and pitted cherries. A great palate cleanser. Portion is on the small side.

Main course: Tagliolini with Quail Ragout
I love places that offer fresh made egg pasta and this was definitely very fresh, with loads of egg flavor, almost angel hair-like thickness coated in a creamy sauce, with bits of quail and gelatine quail fat
Portion again is small-ish. The only bit of let down was the pasta was not really al dente and was slightly over-cooked.

Dessert: Berries cheese cake with ice cream
My dining partner had the lychee sorbet with lychee mousse, which I definitely recommend if you like tropical fruits with a slight zing. My cheese cake was great too -- very light and airy, with a delicious crumbed base and a scoop of ice cream.

Coffee and tea is included in the set price.

Be sure to call to reserve well in advance because this place is quite popular!!

While we were discussing the choice of food and the decor, the servers came at least twice to ask if we were ready. I believed that might be required by the management. I am a sales myself, and reckon a good sales must understand how to pick up hints from clients and discover their needs. If the customers were busy chatting and looked they needed some moments, it would be best not to intrude into their conversation. AMMO exemplified casual dining with quality, thus the menu was kept simple. We decided on everything and finally ordered.

We were offered a bread basket. Well, bread was neither hot nor warm, just a little better than cold. One was an olive bread and the taste was not covered by balsamic even I dipped quite a bit in. Bread is usually the first bite for a customer in a restaurant, and it does leave the first impression to the overall experience also.

To start with, we ordered two appetizers - Slow Cooked Egg, with Toro, sea urchin and Roman zucchini sauce and Scallop Mille-Feuille, with Green Asparagus, paprika and sea urchin sauce. Slow Cooked Egg always topped my favorite list of appetizers, and I had high expectations on how this dish would turn out, since the other ingredients seemed to be quite unconventional to go with the egg when compared to the more popular choices, i.e. truffle, asparagus. I tried to cut a bit of the egg, let the yolk ooze out and ate it with the sea urchin and toro tartare. Well, it was a waste to have the toro served minced instead of having the whole piece as I could not tell whether it was toro or just regular tuna now. I put in the three and started to savor, pity that I could just separately taste toro, sea urchin and a non-warm slow cooked egg. I must say I was a little disappointed. The three ingredients did not blend in and stimulate the palette.

Then we moved onto the Scallop Mille-Feuille. Keeping our hopes high, it was indeed a pretty dish when it was placed in front of us. Two scallops were separated by thin sheets of mille-feuille. The sheets were supposed to be a little crispy, but were already a little sort when we started eating. Scallops were not juicy enough and overcooked for a tiny bit. But the paprika and sea urchin sauce brought up the taste of the scallops.

When the pasta was served, it was quite thoughtful of them to have arranged the portion into two. First we had Angel hair with uni, tomatoes and garlic chips. I liked this dish among the rest of the dishes for the night. A little spiciness was sprinkled and stimulated my taste buds telling me I wanted more. I enjoyed the rich and sweet flavor of uni mixing with angel hair.

The other pasta was a lighter one - Tagliolini with Winter Truffles. Pasta was al dente, and I was a fan of tagliolini and its chewiness, while my boy found it a little too dry as the sauce was rather minimal. It was a simple nice dish but would be better if the smell of truffles could be amplified even more. I loved how the portion was well controlled so we could leave room for two desserts.

I had another stomach for desserts and we had Tiramisu and Pan Fried Brioche. Tiramisu was so-so, loved the creamy mascarpone cheese, the espresso was not too strong and just right for my liking. The brioche was a surprise. It was a good one! Hot and Warm it was on the outside, and reminded me of a thick French toast. It was such a relish to eat with melting Vanilla ice-cream!

It was a lovely dinner at a fantastic location, like a hideaway from the city. Food is not bad but I believe dining is not only about the food, but the whole journey you go through at the restaurant. The experience would be extra-ordinary if the service could be smoother. Servers were a little overattentive before we ordered but they seemed overly busy when we wanted the bill. I guess AMMO is still in its infancy stage and it is acceptable there should be room for improvement. I do hope when I come back again, I would give a smile for its rating!
