What do you do on a cold night after a long day? You have ramen!
I was craving ramen all day, and was gonna go to another famous ramen place in Causeway Bay with my sister, but there was a queue, so I thought of Ramen Iroha, and I am so glad I did!
I was very surprised to see that there was no line up at 7-730 on a Saturday night and there were still plenty of seats inside! Great for me since I was starving, but unfortunate for the business. The 2 of us were greeted by a friendly young staff and were seated immediately. We sat at the bench like table that was not crammed at all! I'm sure at other places, there would have been an extra seat for sure. I appreciated the ability to eat ramen without being able to move my elbows. Also, because they weren't busy, I was able to enjoy my ramen slowly and actually enjoy them, which added to the comfort level.
There were seats on both sides of the bench table, but because there was a high stand for holding condiments, chopsticks and water straight down through the table at head height, you couldn't really see the people across from you; giving you the privacy you need. Brillant idea. Ha! However, because of the height, I had to stand up to grab stuff, which was a little inconvenient. Anyways, as I was sitting, I noticed a cute little sign on the wall saying that they can offer free rubberbands to ladies. How cute.
How, let me talk about what we ordered. All bowls came in a normal or large size. Since we ordered gyoza too, we stuck with the normal size. My sister chose the Ramen with a Pork Bone Garlic Soup Base ($75) and I chose Black Soy Sauce Tsukemen ($90). My sister let me try the broth of her ramen. It tasted quite light and not overly greasy or heavy. I quite liked it. My sister said it was quite "clear", but we both thought that for a garlic broth, the garlic wasn't prominent enough and could have been stronger.
Then my tsukemen arrived. I liked that the noodles weren't thin ones and had a bounce to them, but I found them to be a little bit sticky. I took a sip of the broth and thought it to be a bit salty at first, but then it was okay afterwards. The flavours were strong and had a strong taste of katsuobushi (the fish flakes on top of takoyaki) I thought. The little chunks of pork in it was tender and tasty. The egg on the side was delicious as well because it was quite creamy. There were also 2 pieces of char siu that just melted away in my mouth. Even me the picky meat eater liked it! Half way done, the Gyoza($38) came. The wrap was thin and crispy, and as for the filling, it was tasty and juicy. I liked them.
