Lasagne is lasagne, no matter how you dress it up. Ragu was overly fatty (I assume they didn't properly clean the beef cheeks or the slow cook temperature wasn't high enough).

It's ok though, the night wasn't ruined because we went to M&S after and bought a handful of cakes so we didn't go hungry.

We came here because it was recommended by my colleague. My toddler son loves pasta so we decided to try for Saturday lunch.

When we got there, the ground floor was almost full and the receptionist took us to the 1st floor. Other than our table, only one other table was occupied. We ordered and shortly after that the resturant was packed.

Order starters because you will need them! Our pasta took a while to arrive and when it did, it wasn't a huge portion. To me, that's not a problem at all. The 2 men seated next to our table asked if they could order an additional dish but the server told them that they couldn't because the padta were sold out.

We ordered burrata as our appetiser. It was delicious! My husband is not a fan of rocket or cherry tomatoes but the three really worked well together.

The first pasta that came was the tagliolini with shallot, white truffle paste and fresh shaved black truffle.

Next was the garganelli with the porcini mushroom. I asked for cream based pasta for my son because he will not eat anything with red sauce. They said they can make him short pasta and this is what they served. My son loved it and ate all the pasta! My husband and I ate all the mushroom and they are the best mushroom on a pasta dish that I've ever tasted.

My order which was the pasta of the day, Raviolini with runny egg yolk inside came last. Unfortunately, I was 3/4 done with one of them and didn't find any egg yolk. I asked where the egg was and I was able to return my plate and the restaurant manager came up a few minutes later to apologise and to tell me that they're making the pasta for me. Niko, the manager, had a conversation with my son and told him he'd have a surprise if he finished all his pasta! :-) and true enough, he received his first Kinder egg.

About 10 minutes later after Niko has gone back down, my pasta arrived. It looked the same but when I cut into it, the yolk flowed and I was in heaven. I love my egg yolks for breakfast so I am very pleased with my pasta. It had butter, parmesan and hazelnuts!

For dessert we ordered Tiramisu. It was good but I didn't like the sugar that I was tasting. I thought it was a bit too sweet for me but my husband liked it.

We got the bill and decided we'll be coming back soon to try their other pasta, their meatballs and pana cotta.

Overall, it was worth the price and the wait (for the pasta to arrive).

Woo-hoo! Finally, the wait was over at around 9:15pm

- and we weren't the last in the queue.

We were offered a table facing the bar, which was close to the kitchen.

This cosy restaurant  was pretty packed

- so packed that I couldn't help noticing the couple on my right were playing footsie with each other.

Fascinated by the sweet smell of black truffle in the air, both the gent and I immediately agreed on ordering that. Since we couldn't decide between the beef and duck pasta - both of which seemed to be prepared in a similar way according to the menu's description - we asked for the waiter's advice. He helpfully suggested beef, and we took the advice without hesitation.

Bread and wine were served as soon as we ordered.

Having read pretty positive reviews about the bread served at Pici, I was slightly disappointed.

It didn't go so far as having gone stale, but certainly did not meet my expectation.

Nevertheless, to be fair, it was almost 9:30pm.

The olive oil also deserved some credits - it was quite delicate, so I think it might be extra virgin.

I appreciate the fact that Pici has carefully chosen some good olive oil to be served with complimentary bread.

Ta-dah! Here goes our starter...

If you are looking for some robustly flavoured meaty-mighty meatballs, this is anything but that.

I expected them to be tangy and herby, which is the impression Italian cuisine has always given me - but these are just simple and homey

As accurately described by the menu, the meatballs weren't seasoned by herbs - I wish they were!

While the tomato sauce was quite nice and topped with an apt amount of finely grated Parmesan cheese, it was, in my opinion, a bit plain without the herbs.

This was amplified by the fact that the meatballs themselves weren't seasoned much

- which I am not complaining about, and am just trying to be as descriptive as I can be.

In hindsight, these meatballs reminded me of homemade meatballs I once had at a home-stay family in Oulu, Finland, which were lovingly prepared.

Plus, meatball is a pretty humble dish after all, and these meatballs delivered the expectation of "homemade" as described on the menu. So, I am giving it a 4-star rating.

Our pasta feast began with <Pappardelle>

- with 8 hours slow cooked veal shank ragu, onion, carrot, celery.

To our slight disappointment, it did not taste as nice as its aroma.

We found the pappardelle pasta slightly over-cooked to our liking

- which we found puzzling as the dish wasn't warm enough.

At first, we were prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt as we did take almost half a minute to "let our cameras eat first"

- but the heart of the pasta was indeed a bit cold, so we mentioned it to the waiter as he passed by, who helpfully passed the word to the kitchen right away.

Thankfully, there was an improvement in the temperature of the next two dishes.

Fresh and finely sliced truffle with matching delicate and soft tagliolini

- the pairing can't go wrong and the taste is as wonderful as its aroma.

Simple. Elegant. Delicious.

However, as both of us prefer pasta with a firmer texture, I feel slightly obliged to give this dish a 4-star instead of 5-star rating.

The gent remarked that the tagliolini reminded him of Chinese yi mein (伊麵; a type of flat Cantonese egg noodles made from wheat flour),  and I tried so hard not to giggle while savouring a mouthful of it.

<Orecchiette>

This is the most robustly flavoured dish of the evening

- I enjoyed the lovely balance between the spiciness of the sauce, the sweetness of the cherry tomatoes and the tenderness of the Italian sausages.

The amount of sauce was just right

- the orecchiette pasta wasn't soaked in this tasty sauce, and yet each piece was beautifully flavourful.

While this orecchiette pasta was absolutely delicious and, among the three pastas of the evening, our favourite and the most al dente for our liking, unfortunately its texture did not meet my expectations for Pici.

No doubt Pici is a very, very popular restaurant and the team must be really, really busy

- but it was as if the chef was too busy to give the orecchiette one final, yet crucial, "knead" (/ pinch / press ? - excuse me for not knowing the proper word in pasta making) to give them the signature "small ear" shape, or, put it another way, the "red blood cell" shape.

Here comes the finale of our all Italian fare...

<Tiramisu>

Milkily smooth.

Aptly sweet.

Aromatically tasty.

While both of us agree this was one yummy tiramisu, this wasn't the "perfect" one either of us would have dreamed of.

The gent preferred less ladyfinger (Italian savioardi finger biscuits), to which I agree, but what bothered me a tiny bit more was that I could hardly taste the Marsala wine.  Furthermore, as a black-coffee-person who doesn't prefer overly sweet desserts, I found the brown sugar garnish a bit unnecessary. Having said that, since I have never lived in Italy nor studied Italian cuisine, I don't know the "authentic tiramisu recipe", and am just speaking from my taste for tiramisu.

All in all, ignoring the fact that the wait took us more than an hour, I find Pici worth visiting.

After all, it was a busy Friday night, and I decided to give Pici the benefit of the doubt.

Services were also reasonable for one such busy evening.

I look forward to visiting again at a relatively off-peak time and trying the other pastas (the liquid parmasen ravioloni was sold out... that sounds delicious...!)

Nevertheless about the wait, I am a lady with my gym bag, he made me waited till my friend has arrived only to offer us a seat. He gave the couple after me a seat first as my friend was on his way. I am totally fine with that. Then, I saw there is seat inside since a few people left the place, so I ask him if I could be seated n order a drink while waiting for my friend. He shoved me to the alley to be seated instead, not to the table inside😱 What a ridiculous experience! When my friend arrived, he ushered us to our seat, then only realised that the table wasn't set up yet. He said wait outside rudely! Not even in a nice service manner. This is totally unacceptable for an Italian restaurant! We have frequented so many Italian restaurants in HK and have never been so intimidated before. What an attitude! Pasta is good but not great to me. I've tired better ones than this. When the waitress came over, she place the bread by the wall, with the bread touching facade of the wall. That's unbelievable! Our starter came before our wine arrived. This is totally different service that we've encountered than other restaurants! Definitely will not visit this restaurant again after such bad service! The guy at the reception was totally of bad attitude!

19, 26, 31, 43, 45, 65 & 80

These numbers represent some of the best restaurants in the world; in fact, they are the number ranking of restaurants on the San Pellegrino list that I've visited in the last six weeks.

I've been chasing that elusive high, the perfect meal and while I've had some amazing food recently; I've been left feeling a little hollow....  Like I've been missing out on something.

It wasn't until I visited a tiny little new restaurant just around the corner from my Wanchai apartment that I realised what I'd been missing.

Tucked away in the back streets of Wanchai is perhaps the hottest new restaurant in Hong Kong.  You may not have heard about it; the place doesn't take reservations and it's popularity is driven largely by word of mouth.  But let me tell you; if you haven't heard about Pici, then that is about to change!

We didn't really know what to expect, other than if we didn't arrive early, we could be in for a very long wait; and in a city like Hong Kong, where waiting is normal, that is saying something.  It was no problem for us though, we love eating early and arrived around 5:45 (about 15 minutes before it's opening time) but were still greeted with a smallish queue.

Standing there for 15 minutes was no problem, we just watched the preparation work from the Pici team; which was easy to do given the large window areas that doubled as a dining table.  That may sound strange, but it added to the charm of the tiny little dining room, where every available space was used for diners; and let me say there were some interesting little nooks & crannies used to full effect and ensured there was enough room inside for around 50 diners.

A few minutes prior to opening and with a queue that had built considerably, Pici's manager made his way outside; and like a circus ringmaster explaining the fun and festivities to be had, explained that we'd be let into the dining room in small groups of ten.  The idea to allow the kitchen to process our orders and ensure that they were not over run.

This worked well for the girl and I; we were number nine and ten in the list.  We did hear grumbling in the queue behind us and I guess I would too have been grumpy to have queued, only to be told that the wait would be longer!

From there, it was a bit of a production line.  We were shown to our bar-top table seat and given a very simple one-page menu; with a suggestion that we order a starter to allow the kitchen time to get our pasta just right.  We initially asked for the meatball starter, but were informed that it wasn't available, then settled for the chef's selection of cold cuts.  We then set about scouring the pasta only main courses, trying to decide which of the amazing choices we'd be consuming for dinner.

Choices made and our breadboard of cold cuts arrived.  Vibrant colours greeted us, the bright reds and pinks of the salami and parma ham contrasting against the yellow of chunks of parmesan and taleggio cheese.  We'd noticed the ferrari red meat slicer (brand unknown) churning out the fresh slices of meat and were impressed with the strong and sweet flavours of the ham and salami.  The huge lumps of cheese were equally well appreciated, there is nothing like fresh parmesan cheese to whet your appetite for pasta.

Fresh crusty bread that had been delivered with the cold cuts had quickly disappeared and were just as quickly replaced by our waitress.  The peppery olive oil the perfect accompaniment for the fresh bread; but we had to stop after two helpings, fearing that we would fill up on bread.

We'd been unable to decide on our pasta mains, so ended up getting three plates of pasta to share; a typical approach in tradition Italian meals.  Our first plate was the Pappardelle, the perfectly al dente thick slices of pasta immersed in a sauce of slow cooked veal shank ragu.  The eight hour cooking process had rendered the veal incredibly tender, but I personally didn't like the flavour, which was too much like a braised meat dish for my liking.  The girl found the dish much more to her palate and raved about the strong flavour.

While I didn't love the first plate, I had to admit that it was wonderfully cooked; however, there were no such issues with our second plate of pasta, the Orecchiette. The fresh pasta that had clearly been freshly prepared was simply delicious; small chunks of Italian sausage dotted the plate, the spicy  n'duja sauce was balanced with halves of crushed cherry tomato.  It was such a delicately balanced dish; the spices quite mild and very sweet, were perfectly matched to the pasta.  If put under only a little pressure, I would have to concede that the dish was the best plate of pasta I'd ever had.

However, it would come with some trepidation and internal debate because our next dish of pasta may have taken that mantle.  Informed that the Ravioli was also not available; the dish was replaced by a thin spaghetti and a truffle sauce (resplendent with plenty of freshly shaved black perigord truffle.  It was a case of minimum ingredients used to maximum effect, giving us a pasta dish that was simply out of this world.  The earthy umami of the truffle and the freshness of the pasta could not have been more perfect.

We were on a high, and by the look and sound of the restaurant, we weren't the only ones. There were looks of ecstasy and pure joy on the faces of diners, looks I'm sure were identical plastered over the girl's and my face!

With only two options for dessert, we decided to try one each and this was perhaps the only blight on the dinner.  The desserts were all pre-prepared, obviously to save time in the very busy restaurant.  The girl's Tiramisù and my Raspberry panna cotta both came in glasses, which made eating easier in some respects but also hid a cardinal sin.  My panna cotta was mostly liquid, it hadn't set and there was definitely no wobble on display.  The sweet concoction was more like a custard, and while it tasted OK, it really wasn't a panna cotta.  Thankfully, upon comment, the team at Pici removed the dessert from our bill.

There was no such problem with the girl's Tiramisù, it had set and was quite lovely.

One of the things that I noticed about Pici was the way the mains were served; we didn't get all three of our plates at one time, but as they came out of the kitchen.  It looked as if they were doing batches of different types of pasta; we could see the same dishes being delivered to different tables at the same time.  It wasn't really a problem throughout the night, although our pappardelle pasta was a little on the cool side when delivered.

Considering the hustle and bustle of the tiny little dining room, and the approach to piling customers into the restaurant in groups of ten, service was excellent and at times entertaining.  I was pretty happy to be informed that our unset panna cotta would be removed from the bill, so the staff were pretty attentive too.

What I loved most though, and something that I'd found missing when visiting some of the best restaurants in the world, was the heart of the place.  There was a beat to Pici that was instantly comforting; it enveloped us and made us feel part of a living organism.

I have to say with absolute certainty; I felt much more connected to Pici than I've felt to a restaurant in a long while.

Lucky me, as my neighborhood pasta joint, I can visit anytime

That was until I came across Pici.

From the people that brought us Pirata, is this casual pasta bar. There are no reservations so you need to queue up. I didn't think much of it but when I saw expats queuing to eat, I paused. This place must be good. The restaurant isn't very big. Some people were sitting at the window sill. Boyfriend and I got there early (that's a tip .. go before 7 PM) and we sat at the bar. It's quite noisy and a bit cramped. But it had a lively atmosphere so it made it not so noticable.

Menu is in English only. It's also pretty simple. Just pasta. A few starters and dessert. Add a drink and that's all you need. Prices are not expensive. All items under $200. They also expect you to share and it is enough to do so.

While waiting for our order, we were given  a bread basket of nice chewy bread. Neglected to take a photo but it was good.

Vitelo Tonnato  ($80). We ordered this as the starter. This was thinly sliced veal with a spread of tuna mayonnaise and topped with Sicilian capers. The veal was moist and tender. The capers were salty and combined with the tartness of the tuna mayo, it went really well together. Boyfriend remarked it tasted like how I like to mix a can of tuna with Kewpie mayo and spread it on crackers. I nodded as I love that and this reminded me of that. We still had some bread and soaked the rest of the sauce with it.

Orecchiette ($110). I've never had this pasta fresh before so we chose this. A simple pasta with Italian sausage, spicy n'duja and tart cherry tomatoes. This was in all ways perfect. The pasta was al dente. The sauce was creamy but not too creamy that it made you feel too full. It also had a slight bit of heat to give it a kick but not too spicy that it wasn't edible. A generous topping of Parmesan made this complete.

Papparadelle ($130). This is my favorite off all Italian pastas so I chose this. Topped with an 8 hour slow cooked veal shank ragu, it was rich and hearty. The sauce clung to the pasta well. The meat was soft and tender.

The food was a bit on the salty side but boyfriend it perfectly seasoned. I found that in Italy, the dishes were all on the salty side so this really reminded me of the food I had there. Food that was rich and strong in flavor. Where everything was ka-pow. And this place served food that was exactly that. We will be back for more next time. Next time we'll order the truffle ravioli because I saw it pass by me. They don't use truffle paste or truffle oil here! YAY!

Tucked away on the quaint Saint Francis Yard, Pici Pasta Bar is the newest venture by the Pirata Group who also owns Pirata, The Optimist and the recently opened Tokyolima. The decor of the two-storey space boasts a modern and intimate vibe which is perfect for its casual Italian theme.

The food menu is going to be a very simple one that features an affordable array of pastas all freshly handmade daily by the team.

Vitello tonnato - Help to kick things off for me was this classic Italian starter of cold, sliced veal covered with a creamy, mayonnaise-like sauce made with tuna. A very nice and well portioned dish that managed to put a smile on my face.

Tagliatelle, Italian sausage, spicy nduja, cherry tomato - I was all set to take on their papperdelle until I saw the words "lamb ragout" right next to it so I went with their homemade tagliatelle instead. I had very high expectations for this and thankfully they delivered.

I really enjoyed the perfect bite of the al dente tagliatelle which was nicely matched with some spicy Italian sausage, arugula and cherry tomato sauce. With this little portion, I thought I could very easily have two of these on my own.

Traditional tiramisu - Finding a good tiramisu in Hong Kong could be a little challenging at times. Trust me, I have been down that road before.

But I thought Pici has a really nice one here with a good balance of coffee, mascarpone cream and liqueur (masala?). The mix of sweetness, bitterness and creaminess was perfect. Maybe I should add this to my top ten list!

Nothing flashy, just some good old hearty Italian fare using some of the freshest ingredients from the market to go with the freshly handmade pasta. Would I come back to this little pasta bar? You bet I will!

Ravioloni內藏芝士

配上以蕃茄作基底的醬汁十分美味

只嫌份量偏少

這裡提供意大利式服務

侍者速度慢也有錯漏

最後找續也找錯錢

是因為沒有收取加一服務費之原故嗎

Went at 6 to avoid the crowd as it's walk-in only. Yummy freshly made pasta at reasonable price. My favourite is the Cacio e Pepe. Will definitely come back!

It is really hard choosing a pasta because they have Gnocchi, ravioli, orecchiette, lasagne, tagliatelle, parpadelle and pici!!

We sat at the bar where we got a view of all the pasta being made and the cooking at the far end.

I seem to recognize one of the Chefs from Pirata.

Next was the Chefs selection which was served on a board comprising of parma ham, salami, taleggio and parmesan.

You can evidently see the difference of freshly sliced parma ham because it is moist and radiant in colour.

Moving on the the warm starters, we had the meatballs which were made of pork, beef with tomato sauce.

They were big and tasty.

Now to the stars of the show, we had lasagne, ravioli, gnocchi and orecchiette

The gnocchi was one of the best I have had because the texture is not stodgy and there are bits of potato in it.

The ravioli was also exciting, there were two choices for ravioli so I chose the one with truffle because it was filled with delicious asparagus and shallots.

The filling was silky smooth complemented by the fragrant truffle.

I could barely contain myself when we found out Pirata Group had opened another establishment. Being a huge fan of Pirata, and The Optimist, I honestly had pretty high expectations, but I am happy to report I was not disappointed.

Pici Pasta Bar doesn’t take reservations, and honestly the wait can be a bit of a downer, especially on an empty stomach.  We maybe had to wait close to a half hour at 8:30pm on a weekday. But hey, good things come to those who wait!

The menu is designed for sharing, and we spotted some of our favorites from Pirata’s menu, but decided to give it a miss this time, and jump straight to the pasta, since that’s  supposed to be the highlight.

We had:

Orecchiette
I have never  had handmade orecchiette, and can say there is a tremendous difference with its pre-packaged counterpart. Of course fresh pasta is worlds apart from whatever you can get at the grocery store. But the difference is even more pronounced with Pici’s orecchiette.

The texture is delightfully chewy, bouncy almost.  If you like your pasta with a  bit of a bite, this is definitely for you. It comes with Italian sausage, and spicy nduja, so it has a nice kick as well. This would definitely be a dish I would order again. 5 stars.

Liquid Parmesan Raviolini
I mean if liquid parmesan doesn't sound appetizing to you, just..what is wrong with you..
I almost expected the parmesan to be flowing out of the raviolini once I cut it, but thankfully the texture of the parmesan is more like butter. So it stays intact on your plate, but melts in your mouth. Each raviolini is like a tiny pocket of buttery, cheesy goodness. The sauce contains beef ragu, which honestly was a little salty for my liking. But easily solved with just ladling less sauce on my fork. 4/5

Papperdelle
This reminded me of Pirata’ duck ragu pappardelle, which is one of my all-time favouties, so of course we had to try this dish as well. It is similar to the dish at Pirata, but not quite. The pappardelle is slightly thinner, but still has that egg-y goodness, and has veal instead of duck, which I actually prefer as the veal was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy. 5/5
Overall, I enjoyed all the pasta dishes. The portions are slightly on the small side, which is why we had three dishes between the two of us. So you’d want to either do that, or get some appetizers to start.

To end the meal, we had two of the  Raspberry Panna Cottas which were excellent. Creamy and smooth, with just the right touch of tartness.

Service was flawless as usual. The servers were attentive and pleasant, and we never had to wait long for attention, which can be rare in Hong Kong. A very lovely experience, and I’ll definitely be back soon.
