We've shortlisted Lei Garden because of it's Michelin Star. There was a interview video where the boss of Lei Garden talked about consistently improving the restaurant food quality. I'm paraphrasing, "There are no best food, only better food". And I am glad I've included this restaurant for my Hong Kong trip. We've allocated the second last day of our trip to truly enjoy at the restaurant. I made a booking via phone and the place was easy to find as it is located inside shopping complex. The service was great (in HK, good service was more of a 'luxury').
The captain was very patient and initially introduced us to the more affordable meal. We asked him to recommend their signature dishes. We took like 20 minutes to complete the order and he was very patient throughout. We ordered
a) Peking Duck Package which consists of
i) Peking Duck Skin. This is their most famous dish and for those unfamiliar with this dish , one can choose either to eat the skin directly or wrap it with pancakes. I chose the latter. The first bite was heavenly. The duck aromatic flavor was practically exploding inside my mouth. Eating it with pancakes kinda make it felt less oily, Being Chinese, I'm very familiar with various cooking styles of duck (roasted, braised, deep fried). This restaurant peking duck is definitely one of the best around.
ii) The duck meat was braised in fermented black bean sauce with bitter gourd and served in a claypot. The bitter gourd was too bitter for me, but one of my friends enjoyed it. She said it was 甘甘地 (bitter yet sweet). The duck meat with the sauce also worth mentioning here.
iii) Another part of the peking duck package was scallop for each of us (How good it is!). The scallop texture was not chewy to my liking. But the sauce was good.
b) Braised Shark Fins Soup with Crab Meat
The soup based was flavourful and there was no need to add the vinegar.
c) Stir Fried Scallop with Beans
The scallop texture was the same but the skin was pan fried which bring out a different taste of it.
d) Alaska Crab leg with Glass Noodles
This was not the whole crab coz the Captain told us one crab will weigh more than 3kg. I The crab leg was deep fried then cooked with glass noodles. Well, this will not be a memorable dish as I totally forgot the taste while writing this review. It's not that it's no good, just that you can have this dish elsewhere with similar or better quality.
Looking forward to my next visit to HK to savour the Peking Duck again.
