UKGal back in HK; craving for Chinese food in Tst area. Gave her 2 choices: 花圖 (previous satisfying dinner experience) or this one. Picked this one cos 1) UKGal wanted steamed fish and this restaurant’s name was “The Seafood” and 2) someone was here for dim sum lunch and thought it was ok.Shared a space with CanLah, which meant it was under the Maxim group. Dinner for 7. Greeter showed us to a tiny table, pulling some chairs over. We noted to Greeter that the table seated 6 ppl at best and requested a bigger table. Greeter flatly refused, noting that we all fitted comfortably. Tucked away in a corner, no “stunning Victoria Harbour view” whatsoever.
Picked the dinner set for 6. Here’s what we had.
美人魚沙律- crunchy and marinated in sauce similar to the Shanghainese 脆鱔. Server noted that these were fish from Singapore.
川味涼拌海蜇頭
8 pieces of 肥婆黑叉燒- very fatty indeed.
薑蓉雪里紅蒸斑. Server initially attempted to replace the 花英 with 東星. We agreed, but was finally presented with the 花英 anyway. Asked for some rice to go with the fish soy sauce. Taste of ginger etc completely overpowered taste of the fish. Someone queried whether such an abundance of minced 梅菜, garlic n ginger was necessary; another replied that this was often done to mask the un-freshness of seafood.

Fried scallops with assorted beans. Replacing the 黑金蒜粉絲蒸北海道元貝 supposedly on the menu. Server explained that the substitute was fresher. Chased server for the bowls of rice. 🫤
九年百合炒蘆筍. Chased for the bowls of rice. Again.😪
48 小時熟成煙燻片皮鴨- came with the usual cucumber strips and 3 plates of sauce. Particular interesting looking was the slimy green liquid. They tasted, reported the it was very spicy. Jalapeño, probably. Very smoky flavor. Tried a thigh, very salty. Breast meat was anything but juicy and tender.

By this time, our turntable was overflowing with stuff; even after consolidating the 炒蘆筍with the fried scallop. I was literally hugging the tiny empty pot of hot water, which, no one bothered to come refill. Still no rice. 😓 Might as well not show up since there was no room for it anyway. 🥱
Whilst looking everywhere for server noticed that there were in fact MANY empty tables around, tables that were bigger that the one we were being assigned to. 😡
濃湯螃蟹米粉煲- came with individual servings. They didn’t like it. Could only taste white pepper. Apparently the crab had no taste. Someone repeated the remark about masking un-freshness of seafood.
Crab remains on the side- no takers- which server was trying to stuff into what little space was left between me and the still empty hot water pot. 😩

Enough. 😵💫Asked for the manager. 😵
Manager eventually appeared. Thunder pointed to all the plates on the verge of slipping from the overcrowded turntable and conveyed our bewilderment as to why they insisted on making us sit on such a tiny table when there were many bigger ones available. Manager nodded in agreement and directed server to bring on a side table to house the pot of tea, menus/toothpicks/wet paper towels (which we had already put on the floor due to the lack of space).

In summary: $770 pp for this. Severely understaffed; whatever staff there was, was in need of desperate retraining. Very disappointing really for a giant group like Maxim. I’m normally hesitant to give a 😪 as not to discredit the hard work of restaurant staff. However, our vote was unanimous this time. Nuff said.
