There are a lot of Japanese style hot plate steak restaurants that have opened in Hong Kong in recent years. The concept is simple. You order what type of beef, how many grams at a vending machine. Sit down and wait for them to bring a hot stone plate with raw slab of steak on top to grill away. Soup, rice and salad is unlimited. The food is usually ok. Not great but at least cost effective. That as until we came across this place. We decided to explore the newly renovated mall in Quarry Bay and found this was the only restaurant that was busy. Other than Cafe de Coral. A small restaurant where everyone sat at bench seats, eating steak on a stone grill.

The menu is in English and Chinese. But it is straight forward. Choose the type of beef and how many grams.

Each seat has a line of condiments for use. The other end of the restaurant is where you go for the unlimited soup, rice and salad. I liked this place offered furikake with your rice.

The salad was good. Fresh and not the usual just lettuce and dressing like other places. They added cherry tomatoes and corn along with two choices of dressing.

The soup was also not the usual miso but a beef soup!

Then the steak is placed in front of you with  a piece of paper covering it to protect everyone from being splattered with hot oil. You can also get an apron to wear if you want to protect your clothes.

We tried two cuts of beef. This is the rib eye ($150 for 200g). It was ok. A bit chewier. Not as juicy and dried out quickly.

This is the top blade ($80 for 200g). Their lowest grade from the entire menu. This was excellent! The meat was juicy. Tender even after laying on the stone forever. The flavor the beef was strong.

From the two, the cheapest cut was the best. And for the price, definitely a deal. Forget the higher grades, this is the one to choose. And oddly, this is the first time where we both said we'd be back to a restaurant of this type.
