When one thinks of Indian food, one thinks of curry, masala, tikka and loads and loads of naan. When one thinks of where to eat authentic Indian, the word Chung King Mansion is always mentioned. After some research, I found a place that serves Indian food that isn't so commonly known. The place is called Kailash Parbat. Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, right behind K11, With branches in several areas of India and other places in Asia, it now has a branch in Hong Kong.

Kailash Parbat (according to the intro on the menu) has been here for 65 years. WOW! Their focus is on chaat. Chaat, roughly translated, is Indian street food. A bit like tapas. Small finger food. They also are a vegetarian Indian restaurant. Many of the dishes here have no meat.

The restaurant is nicely decorated. Very clean and spacious. Menu is huge and varied. It's in English but a Chinese translated one is available upon request. But if you are not familiar with the items, the staff are very helpful with all the questions we had.

Desi Kala Khatta ($49). Bored of the usual lasssi, I felt adventurous and chose something I never heard of. I was warned. This is a serious drink.  A popular summer drink found all over the streets of Mumbai. I can say ... this is an aquired taste. Made from Indian blackberry, it tasted like the Chinese sour plum drink but mixed with various spices and dashes of salt. This really grows hair on your chest. It's super strong. The waiter warned me about that.

Pani Puri ($70). As this is what made this restaurant so popular in India, we decided to order this. I can see why this is such a popular street eat. Crunchy puff balls that are filled with spiced mashed potatoes and lentils. There were two pitchers: one was sweet taramind sauce, the other a spiced mint sauce. You pour the sauces into the balls and eat it just like that. This was great and adding the sauces gave it a whole new dimension of flavors. Salty, sweet, spicy and fresh. All in a crispy ball. I love these and I want more!

Chaat Platter ($135). We just decided to order a variety chaat platter to try out the different chaats. This was a selection of four chaats: dahi wada, bhel puri, sev puri and crispy corn basket. When it arrived, we were a bit confused. It seem to all look the same? But each tasted different!

This is the crispy corn basket. A great crunchy bits of corn kernels mixed with tomato and a spicy sour sauce. Clearly addictive.

This is the dahi wada. A yoghurt sauce that covered soft lentil balls. The balls were soaked so they gave a sponge-like texture. The yoghurt sauce was fresh and milky and spiced with a sweet spice  that felt like a chutney.

This is the behl puri. This was a bit on the spicy side. Crunchy puff balls with potato and green chili. Spicy and fresh all at the same time. Definitely a party in your mouth as it was also bombarded with sweet taramind as well.

This is the sev puri. This had a lot of chopped onions in it. But there were bits of pomengranate. Though spicy, it was calmed down by the sweet and sour sauce found in it.

Something I did discover while eating this. It was all covered with crunchy puffs and shreds.  A while back, I bought a bag of these crunchy puffs at a local Indian grocery store and was confused. It wasn't that good. But combined with all these spices and sauces, it made me open my eyes. This is how it was supposed to e eaten! Not straight out of the bag  with a can of Coke!

Pav Bhaji ($75). We ordered a main to end the meal and chose this. A popular Mumbai street food, this is a potato curry that is traditonally served with shallowed butter fried bread. HOLY WOW. Shallow.Butter.Fried.Bread. Enough said. The bread was like a soft dinner bun and was great in digging into  the curry. The curry itself was rich and thick.  And the spices ... the heat hits you suddenly and just lingers. But yet it wasn't so spicy that I couldn't go on. It was served in a nice pot ... I guess we don't get the usual ghetto style tin plates here.

There were many other items we had not heard of or tried before. Definitely different than the usual Indian food. The things we ordered were delicious. Well, the drink is definitely for the brave so I may go safe with a chai next time. But everything else was fantastic. Great layers of textures and flavors. It's exactly what Indian food should be. All in a very nice setting. I'll definitely be back.
