Decided to try the "yum cha" (Chinese dim sum and tea) with my dine and wine buddies. Decided to try the "yum cha" (Chinese dim sum and tea) with my dine and wine buddies. Above and Beyond was the Chinese restaurant situated near the top floor of Hotel Icon - the teaching and research hotel owned by the Polytechnic University.
A pleasant surprise to have white peony among the tea options so we chose that. The mini pineapple bun with barbecued pork inside was crispy and tasty, outshining the traditional steamed barbecued pork bun which was of normal standards. So was the beef egg congee, which was satisfactory but not outstanding. The truffle pork vegetable dumpling was unexpectedly good; the fresh ingredients, the thin dumpling coat and the black truffle sauce matched well and the taste belied its deceivingly plain appearance. The quail egg Siu Mai was a dish reminiscent of older days, the taste was good but the caloric count hit the roofs. The shrimp dumpling was again satisfactory. The rice flour roll with breaded shrimp roll inside was pleasing to the palate with the crunchy texture and the highlight to the tastebuds with egg yolk. The crab powder was a bit overdone for the siu lung bao, but the lotus root cake was great with the chewy pork and water chestnuts paste. The osmanthus jelly was so-so but the pear-shaped deep fry dumpling with milk-yolk inside was quite unique as a dessert.
The view was splendid on the side facing the harbour; there were glitches in the service and repeated reminders were necessary at one point - perhaps to be expected with a training hotel. At $250 per head, the food and view more than made up for the service hiccups.
