It’s my 3rd time sitting here on the 101th floor of the ICC. Same restaurant, same smile.My friends found it pricey, but I totally disagreed with them. If you looked under the hood of a Maybach or a Bentley, you’ll say “worth it”. The experience of dining in Inakaya is superlative.A majority of people are amazed by the wallpaper-like view of the Victoria harbor, some pleased by the elegant ambiance. It’s my 3rd time sitting here on the 101th floor of the ICC. Same restaurant, same smile.

My friends found it pricey, but I totally disagreed with them. If you looked under the hood of a Maybach or a Bentley, you’ll say “worth it”. The experience of dining in Inakaya is superlative.
A majority of people are amazed by the wallpaper-like view of the Victoria harbor, some pleased by the elegant ambiance. Me, not only the food, but its humble attitude.

It’s a one of a kind high end Japanese restaurant in the city that you can’t find no fancy stuffs. Decors on the wall, sculptures around the tables are all clean and simple. They rather display spirit of zen (to me at least) instead of merely showing off bunch of magnificent pieces of high art without purpose. Waiters there were all friendly, helpful and efficient. Last time I went there many people were kissing the floor-to-ceiling windows for picture taking, but I rather enjoy counting lego cars with my girl friend. Inakaya isn’t a place to sit up straight although yeah its fine dinning, but a home-like eatery for you to sit back and relax with a group of close friends, or even by yourself. Getting boring of the harbor view? Get inside the Robatayaki room! It’s a playground for adults. (I didn’t mean 18+) I recall having been in a Robatayaki restaurant when I was little in Japan. Everything’s the same. The room was loud, “chefs” were all wearing ninja costumes, passing us food with their “racquets”, yelling out “beef”, “fish”, “veggie” in Japanese. We can even tried the もちつき (Japanese mochi making practice) with the ninjas. It was fun!

We tried the scampi sashimi, wagyu hotpot, Udon with assorted tempura and assorted sashimi outside, some teppanyakis, beef and kinki (キンキ) fish inside the Robatayaki, and 2 cocktails.
The scampi sashimi was the must try. I’m not kidding I fought for the last piece with my girl friend. It’s so fresh that it still swam inside our stomachs. The mouth watering scampi was bouncy and naturally seasoned by sea water. The Udon was unexpectedly perfect. The best Udon I’ve ever had in my life. The Udon was silky smooth and chewy. The tempura looked colorful but I don’t like deep fried dishes so I passed them to my girl friend.

For the people who go to the restaurant for robatayaki, I highly recommend that they try an order of sashimi. Since my grandma sold seafood in the wet market before, I was taught to distinguish btw fresh and yuck. A lustrous surface tells it all. Shiny almost equals jet fresh, while pleasant odour proves it one step further. If the piece of sashimi wrestles with your chopsticks when you poke it then don’t wait. Wasabi him, soy sauce him, finish him. That night, I found all the fish was just caught.
The wagyu hotpot looked boring but it surprised me. It is magic that both texture and flavor of the hotpoted wagyu remains the same as raw meat. The snowflake meat with marble pattern explains it. Japanese black cattles live a more cozy life than hong kong people do.
The kinki fish was magnific. Although it looked like those bad guys in super Mario world, this one simply the masterpiece. The outside was crispy like chips, while the inside was slick and glossy like tofu. Robatayaki beef, no for me. The 3 pcs were a bit bigger than bite size. I expected them to dissolve without too much effort like the hotpoted wagyu but they did not. I felt like I was chewing gum inside a Japanese classroom. Kamikaze was a bit over alcoholed to me, but it paired best with yaki dishes anyway.

Dining on such a high level is indeed an enjoyment of ease and comfort. Great location, exceptional food, kind people.
