Never having been to North America, I might not share the nostalgic memories my fellow reviewers had, but the sheer love for food drove me to this little gem among the 五金鋪s.

I came early in the morning and I was greeted with the simple yet chic orange and white decor. Then the owner gave me a warm welcome and introduced me to the joint's signature cream cheeses - Blueberry and Honey Walnut. The former may be available in some other joints, but the one here had that appropriate hint of sourness that matched with the cream cheese base. The latter was an interesting combination and resembled my favourite breakfast item - yoghurt with honey and granola. However I needed something more substantial than just a cream cheese bagel, so I opted for the bagel sandwiches.

I ordered an Ivy's Vege ($33), a vegetarian bagel named after the sweet-looking lady owner of the shop. There were 7 types of bagels to choose from, and I picked the tomato variety. For the cream cheese filling I picked the onion flavor. My dainty bagel was made in front of me in the open kitchen, and no sooner I already found myself savoring this little delight.

First it looked more like a cake than a bagel with that cute little cherry tomato on top. The fillings, hand-picked by Ivy, included salad greens, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, alfalfa sprouts and a piece of pineapple. These were all colorful and eye-pleasing, the flavors were very light and gave me the first fiber I needed for the day. The only complaint was that the pineapple hadn't been drained thoroughly so the syrup went all over my hands whilst I was eating the bagel. The other was my fault really - I should have picked a less pungent bagel and cream cheese for this particular sandwich - both of them were too strong to match with the refreshing fillings. Though I hadn't tried I'd have a go for either the plain or whole wheat bagel. Anyway, experimenting is fun!

I also had a coffee ($8 with bagel, regular price $13). Oh yes, the telltale sign that Yo Bago's Canadian roots is the cans of Tim Horton coffee at the cashier (well I didn't know that until my dear fellow reviewers wrote about it). Well for coffee's sake it was sort of creamy...not very aromatic of coffee...but I think it's the experience that counts.

I'd say I had a fond experience at Yo Bago thanks to the quality food and friendly and helpful owners and staff. (And before I forget, after trying the sample offered by the owner, I think their homemade cookies will soon become a favorite item too!)

Despite some teething problems that are excusable, I think I'll be returning pretty soon.

P.S. Chris [the owner] if you're reading this, please kindly note that the prices quoted in your promotion flyers are different from those displayed in-store! Are they meant to be the take-away prices?

只係食咗honey and walnut cream cheese bagel. 1.

It's refreshing to find more western food in Taikoo Place instead of the usual chinese dim sum restaurants or cha chan ten. There weren't alot of bagel sandwiches on their menu and the price is a bit expensive for such a small bagel (I paid $58 for a Vancouver bagel + mango smoothie). I didn't know they also sell Tim Horton coffees coz it wasn't in their menu...I would have gotten one if I knew..maybe next time! The owner is very polite and I thought it was quite sweet that he wrote our names

I will definitely come back again for afternoon tea next time.

My first experience of bagels was in New York City, when rings of dough wrapped in plastics were generously smothered with 'white stuff' as thick as putty, then stuffed into the mouths of foreigners. That act filled me with equal part dread and intimidation, and I admit I have not touched bagels for years. Then I rediscovered the joy of raisin bagels, and then, those with poppy seeds on it, halved and toasted. The haunting 'white stuff' from before turned out was cream cheese, and now that I realized, they also come in rainbow colours of pink (strawberry), pale orange (salmon), yellow (pineapple), with flakes of green (Spinach), and purple (blueberry)...

Call it a tribute to the inner nostalgic me, I have found refuge in YO BAGO, the new bagel joint tucked inside the quiet corners in Quarry Bay, sandwiched by the massive skyscrapers at Taikoo Place. What initially caught my eye was not the bagels, but stacked up massive cans of Canada's own Tim Horton's Coffee. Those who have spent time in Canada will remember vividly about the Canadian brand -- famous for its collection of donuts and coffees. I went in with equal part anticipation and excitement. Chris Leung, owner of Yo Bago, hailed from Missasauga, Ontario, is introducing the brand coffee to HK-ers, together with a selection of bagels and cream cheeses featured in the establishment. The name, "Yo Bago", is a play on words that carries a sense of hope from the owner to us all, that we will find "your" (our) Bagel somewhere through some experimentation of flavours and toppings. Aside from cream cheese spreads, there are also sandwiches with cold meats and even one vegetarian sandwich to choose from.

The space may not be a large room, but with an open kitchen counter on one side and a few tables on the other, you can settle under the picket-fence white walls with sunshine yellow/orange accents throughout. Simplicity with an edge for comfort is the key here, the equally simple menu offers up some good use of bagels, including the use of condensed milk and Nutella. There are a total of 7 cream cheeses including two house-made specialties. I ordered up a chocolate bagel with these specialty cream cheeses spread on it. (Honey Walnut and Blueberry). To go with the bagel how could I not order a Tim Horton's Double-Double? (note: Double-double is a strictly Canadian terminology in coffee-ordering. It means 2-sugar, 2-cream. It is also the grand standard for filter/drip coffees in Canada)

The Blueberry cream cheese spread generously on half of the chocolate bagel, pictured here. The taste of berry is fruity with a slight tartness that's unlike the store bought variety. The chocolate bagel itself is halved and toasted before spreading. It's not particularly strong on the cocoa flavour but you shouldn't expect it to either. The Honey-Walnut cream cheese is the winner -- The light fluffy spread has a moderately sweet honey taste without cloying sweetness that makes you scream for a glass of water. A pleasantly smooth spread with chockful of ground walnut bits blending in yielding a better texture and an alternative to an otherwise ordinary spread of peanut butter.

The Double-double is a no-mistake concoction, made from Tim Horton's coffee, and just like Chris has mentioned while I was in between bites of coffee and sips of the coffee, that there are certainly better coffees elsewhere, say better brands with deeper flavours. But it is equally true that his idea of bringing back Timmy's is much for the sentimental values, that most of the folks who have had grown up or spent time sipping Timmy's will be able to re-live their moments and fond memories of it while tasting it. It's not far from the fact that the double-double has done it for me, then and now, that food itself is one of many things that ring up the most remarkable moments of my life, and they are guides to many of the crucial events that help shape who I am, as an aspiring foodie and as the person I am today.

Taking in the last bit of the cheese-laden bagel with a Timmy's Mug of coffee in hand, I was deeply satisfied with a good bagel served with care and much "heart", and a mugful of good juju that warms from inside out, into the deepest of my being. The lingering taste of sweetness and smokiness from the coffee doesn't merely sustain, but resuscitates great satisfaction and comfort, and feeling delighted that I have a common link of Canadian-ness somewhere close to home.

I have a try their home made cream cheese, for example, honey and walnut, Blueberry and so on. I think I will try it next time.

One last thing, the size of the bagel is not really the same with those at Great, it is a bit smaller but they will re-size the size later. Looking forward to it!
