Well, I was really looking forward to this meal as I had wanted to eat here for a while. The wife and I arrived on time and were immediately shown to our seats. We ordered a nice Rhone Valley white whilst deciding on our mains. The bottle took about ten minutes to arrive and it looked chilled but I'm pretty sure it was put in the freezer for ten minutes as the wine itself was room temperature. Well, I was really looking forward to this meal as I had wanted to eat here for a while. The wife and I arrived on time and were immediately shown to our seats. We ordered a nice Rhone Valley white whilst deciding on our mains. The bottle took about ten minutes to arrive and it looked chilled but I'm pretty sure it was put in the freezer for ten minutes as the wine itself was room temperature. Not a good start. 

We ordered the calamari and mussels as a starter and it looked great. Unfortunately, the sauce had very little flavour and the squid was chewy. 

My wife had the lamb loin and I had the 24 hour braised venison. The lamb was subtle and quite nice, but the portions were small. My venison came in a pot with polenta and veg and it smelled great. However, having 'been braised' for 24 hours I expected a dish infinitely more tender than the leather boots that arrived. So disappointing. 

Oh, one final point. The Pawn is a great building with nice decor. But, if you sit on the balcony you are staring straight at a refuse depot over the road. Unfortunately, it was in the process of being emptied while we were there.

頭盤三揀一,我們選擇了藍蟹肉小麥多士,蟹肉很鮮甜,慢慢細嚐之下,感覺加入了牛油,與底下的小麥多士甚為合襯,可是吃多了有點膩,旁邊的醃茴香正好用來中和一下膩滯的感覺。來過幾次,發現餐廳喜歡用上Fennel來作沙律,同樣清新易入口。

正因是慶祝節日的關係,烤火雞變成不二之選。大家一提到烤火雞總是散而遠之,相信是火雞又鞋又沒有味道,但這個主菜正好相反,火雞以63度慢煮,雞肉柔軟有彈性,配上Pig in a Blanket來吃,味道剛好,吃膩了,又蘸上莓來吃,清一清味蕾,從未吃過如此嫩滑的肉質了。

最後又以Traditional Christmas Pudding with Brandy Vanilla Custard來作甜品,熱辣辣的,入口滿口是果仁及橙皮香,還有不少葡萄乾,淋上特製的白蘭地吉士醬,帶點酒香,更是迷人,在這個天寒地凍的氣溫下,即時變得暖洋洋。

Thanks to NK and Catch On for inviting me to this rooftop market to try a galore of wonderful food.The event was a success and I hope they will do it again because there were so many expats there and it gave me an opportunity to try the restaurants in that group which were: The Pawn, The Principal, The News Room, SML and Classified.All food and beverage was paid for using tokens which were available for purchase at the reception.As a summary, the fish and chips were the best and it was a bargain

The event was a success and I hope they will do it again because there were so many expats there and it gave me an opportunity to try the restaurants in that group which were: The Pawn, The Principal, The News Room, SML and Classified.
All food and beverage was paid for using tokens which were available for purchase at the reception.
As a summary, the fish and chips were the best and it was a bargain for $50 with two huge succulent chunks of fish.

The weather was a bit too hot and sunny that day but once I started eating the food it was so delicious that the hot weather did not bother me.

This review also coincides with my recommendation to spend Christmas at The Pawn on 「細味」which costs $2 at your local 7-11.

Since many people have requested some Chinese on my 3000th review, I might as well copy and paste the edited sentences from「細味」, please see below!~.

I have always been curious about The Pawn because the building is Historic.
Many expats go there for British food, the British magazine Time Out held their opening party there and Richard Ng 吳耀漢 who has lived in the UK was interviewed there too for some local TV Chit Chat.

Before this tasting, I was lucky to be invited to the The Pawn Roof Top market which had food stalls from The Pawn, The Principal, The News Room, SML and Classified.
It was a great day with the sun shining and beautiful views of Wan Chai city from the roof top.

For the festive lunch, it was on the second floor which is served from now till Christmas and there is Festive dinner too which can be found on their website/Fb.

There was quite a generous amount of crab on the toast which seemed to be mixed with butter, but the pickled fennel on the side was really acidic and balanced the heavyness of that.

Now to my favourite part of the meal!!
The turkey was tender and juicy complemented by the sweet and sour cranberries.
Although it does not state there is stuffing on the menu, I found a huge piece of stuffing which was heavily soaked in wine.
The Stuffing is the best part of roast turkey because it is really tasty with lots of herbs.
Eating the stuffing, turkey and cranberry together was delicious.

Last but not least, the strong Christmas pudding was paired perfectly with brandy vanilla sauce which lightens the taste of peel.

Even though its my 3000th review I will keep posting my dining experiences.

People will probably think that I express my views to get tastings, but I have been expressing my views way before tastings became popular these two years.
If I did intend to get tastings I would have disclosed my contact information right from the beginning in 2006.

Tastings have only become popular these two years because restaurants have found it more effective in terms of showcasing their dishes because everyone uses social media such as FB/instagram/OpenRice/blogs etc.

Personally for tastings, I liked to feature more on the taste, photos and less on the price because it would be quite promotional and others at the tastings with me would have written the price so readers will be able to find it easily.

However with photos you can judge on the size and quality of the food, but in some cases portion sizes will vary because they just made it bigger so that everyone could try some.
In some cases, it would be an appetizer or mains shared between a few people during tastings but the readers don't see that because they are not present!

Some people choose to spend their time hiking, shopping, exercising while I spend some of my time expressing my views on food because I am quite passionate about eating and I love to eat!

To be honest, if I was hoping for this 3000th review to be recommended by OpenRice I would have written it on a non tasting review because Tastings do not get recommended on OpenRice as it is just a showcase of dishes from the restaurant.

Hopefully I have not been too straight and offended anyone here!

We have never dined in this iconic building which was originally a Chinese pawnshop, so we could not contain our excitement when we had brunch at The Pawn last month. The Pawn made a name for itself to plop us down in a "colonial" venue that's so obviously in quotes, we know that it must be as heartily tasteful and cultural as its antique exterior suggests. The place has long been lingering on our "to-go" list, but we often brush it off as another "touristic" restaurant. Finally, we had an excuse to go there for C's birthday brunch.

As a heritage building from the 1800's, The Pawn's weekend brunch menu offers some of the most traditional British dishes, including a variety of eggs dishes and its famous fish and chips. Make sure you find the elevator at the side entrance (which was more modern looking than the storefront) that leads to the 2/F so that you do not have to hike up the flight of narrow steps. We were seated indoor and the setting's tastefulness and minimalism resembled the casual atmosphere you can easily find in many British pubs. It also has a cheerful outdoor terrace on the 2/F rendering an incredible view of Wan Chai and warm sunlight. The weekend brunch menu is priced at around $100 to $200 per head.

(1) C ordered a Poached eggs on toasted muffin ($85). Popularly known as the eggs benedict, this is served with Hollandaise & gammon ham or baby spinach. The birthday boy went for the gammon ham, which was deliciously tender. The poached eggs were heavenly and once cut open, the running yolk just melted instantly on the thin layer of ham. The muffin just brought this dish further and it was a very satisfying dish.

(2) The Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon ($95) is served on various kinds of bread: white, brown, granary or brioche. The eggs were adoringly moist and the perfectly seasoned smoked salmon just gave a nice twist to our tastebuds, and we certainly wouldn't mind the simplicity of the dish.

(3) British Accent decided to go for the traditional British signature fish and chips: Beer battered lemon sole with peas & chips ($180). And it did not disappoint! The finely fried fish had a fantastic aroma and texture. Although it did take a while for it to arrive, it was worth it as the fish tasted very fresh and soft.

(4) The Kedgeree Risotto ($185) was served with Smoked haddock, radishes, soft boiled egg. It was a gentle-looking and enjoyable dish, but this dish could have trended a little more fully and now it was nothing to rave about.

The Pawn's antique/modern style is one schematic tasteful showcase of the most traditional British dishes after another, rendered in an incredibly simple and minimalistic prestige dining experience. We all felt that the service could have been better as the waitress sometimes forgot our orders, which made the experience slightly disappointing. The simplicity and portion of the dishes may not justify its price, but the casual and historical atmosphere and the delicious British brunch dishes will surely bring us back!

對於和昌大押這座大廈,相大家絕對不會陌生,其特別的外型,從遠處也可以認出來。來吃飯是比較少,反而來喝一杯或Happy Hour就經常。這次來,是因為其五周年紀念菜單,不知不覺,原來這裡開業已5週年了。這個五周年紀念菜單真是非常超值,$1888+10%,四位用(事實上,如果不是大胃王,6人用也綽綽有餘)先來餐湯,是燒南瓜湯,味道比較清淡,而且麵粉也下得重手了一點,可以改用牛奶或忌廉會更好。再來是英式頭盤,包括:Ham Hock Terrine (火腿醬), Scotch Egg (蘇格蘭蛋),蟹肉醬,紅菜頭三文魚及鴨肉雞肉芭菲。是非常英式的菜式,最出色的當然是scotch egg,傳統郊遊時吃的小食,雞蛋包上肉餡,外層是麵包糠,炸至香脆。一般的scotch egg蛋會過熟,這裡做的卻保持溏心,時候及火力的控制要非常準確才可以。之後是份量驚人的主菜。USDA Prime Rib 燒牛肉,還要是帶骨的,估計最少有24oz, 雖然不是炭燒,但肉味濃郁而火力適中,甘香而肉質鬆化,只是吃這個主菜已,值回票價。48小時慢煮豬腩肉,皮燒得也算香脆,經過慢煮的豬肉入口即河溶,豬肉味道濃郁,油香豐富,是必

燒原條海鱸,燒得乾身,而魚肉嫩滑,因為魚味偏淡,所以用了茴香來提味,效果也不錯呢。

有apple crumble, 檸檬杯,白蘭地卷等等。個人也不是什麼甜人,不過如果沒有甜品的一餐,又總是有點失落。蘋果加上肉桂及牛油crumble是我很喜歡的味道,這裡的水準也不錯,
不得不提的是,The Pawn將積極支持本地慈善機構聖雅各福群會(St James Settlement),9月17日至10月27日期間,客人於午餐消費時額外捐贈港幣5元,或於晚餐消費時額外捐贈港幣10元, The Pawn亦會捐贈同等數額的善款,全部募得款項及收益將用於資助聖雅各福群會的樂寧兒童發展中心,是非常值得推動的活動!

Located in an illustrious building that was initially a pawnshop, The Pawn is an iconic restaurant which serves hearty British fare in one of Hong Kong busiest, most historical districts. When I came here for brunch last time, I had a fantastic time sitting on the outdoor terrace enjoying the afternoon sun. At night, the terrace is equally fabulous for an intimate gathering with friends.

Paying homage to the building housing The Pawn which dates back to 1888 and celebrating the restaurant's 5th year anniversary, a set dinner menu, at $1,888 for four persons, is offered from now until 27 October 2013. The menu comes with a soup and an appetiser platter for each person, and four (huge) mains and four desserts to be shared. While I normally would not peg this stylish eatery as budget-friendly, this set dinner is indeed a bargain.

(1) Five of The Pawn's signature cocktails are now available at $90 each, and one of them was Pawn 5, a drink made with Miller's gin, starfruit, lemon juice, Grand Marnier and cinnamon syrup. There was a lovely, fruity tang, and the taste of cinnamon enhanced its taste.

(2) The Crème brûlée was undoubtedly the favourite drink amongst the ladies. Made with vanilla vodka, crème anglaise and Frangelico, it tasted like vanilla milkshake with a strong alcoholic kick!

(4) The kitchen presented our selection of appetisers in a bamboo steamer. My favourite was the scotch egg - excellently crispy on the surface and gloriously molten in the middle, this scotch egg could be one of the best in Hong Kong; my only suggestion is that the layer of pork could be thicker. The potted crab, unapologetically covered in duck fat (which is, actually, the correct way of making it, as seafood back in the days had to be preserved in fat), was tasty, even if a tad too fatty for our modern palates. The beetroot salmon was heartening, but the duck & chicken parfait was a little pungent.

(5) My friends and I would like to think that we have a lot of stomach space, but we were beaten hands down by the gigantic mains. Four of the most popular main courses are offered in this set dinner menu, and the first that arrived was the whole roast sea bass with fennel and mixed herbs. The fish was well roasted, and the herbal seasoning hit all the right notes; also, how we adored the zing from the preserved lemon!

(7) We had no idea that bliss, in the form of a 48-hours slow-cooked pork belly, was awaiting us. Marinated for a day and then slow cooked for two, the pork belly was so tender that we failed to pick up a piece without it falling apart and all over the table. It melted instantly in the mouth like a fluffy snowball on a child's palm, and its gentleness was not joined by the roasted skin, which was delightfully crunchy.

(9) As we told the manager that we were defeated by the huge main courses, he thoughtfully reduced the portions of the desserts for us - normally, four full-sized desserts would be served for this set menu. The lemon trifle shot was balanced with an appropriate level of tartness, and the strawberry Eton mess was accomplished with a well executed meringue. The brandy snap was delicately scrumptious and offered a great contrast between crispiness and creaminess, but the apple crumble could have been more buttery.

There were kinks in some of the dishes that needed to be ironed out, but overall, it is evident that the kitchen has put in a lot of effort into preparing these hearty, delicious British offerings. Most importantly, this is simply a lot of food for around $500 per person!

不知道大家知不知道灣仔有一幢歷史很悠久的建築物,內有一間吃英國菜的餐廳,也有酒吧的,那就是和昌大押的舊址,而那間餐廳就是The Pawn。曾經也有到過那邊喝飲料,確是很有令人忘記壓力的氣氛。這次就座的樓層相信是以吃晚膳為主的。今年適逢The Pawn 5周年,而建築物已有125年歷史(建於1888年),特地推出了一個$1888的4人餐。而且值得一讚的是雖然這個套餐也融入了港式文化,主菜的部分是可以4人一同分享的,正好可以多吃吃幾款主菜,也不會過於膩口。南瓜湯&麵包 (Roasted pumpkin soup):率先吃到的是麵包,外層猶有些脆身,麵包組織綿密而鬆軟,相當有水準,塗牛油吃,更佳。有點小可惜的是南瓜湯的質感跟味道都不怎麼對我的胃口。接 着吃到的是英式的頭盤(British Starter selection): 賣相上已是大大加分的地方,也是一個中西合壁的前菜吧,前菜是放在一個中式的籠子內,很有特色。打開籠子,驚見擺得精緻細膩的5款前菜,光是這點已足以令 人讚不絕口,而在味道上,5款前菜也各有特色,好吃。最厲害應該是那個還是半流 心的Scotch egg了吧,簡單來說就是一顆

最厲害應該是那個還是半流 心的Scotch egg了吧,簡單來說就是一顆炸蛋,麵包糠脆皮夠薄身,蛋跟脆皮中間還有一層肉,真不簡單,聽食友更說這個是他吃過最好吃的,而餐廳GM更說如果有吃過更 好吃的話要跟他說呢!那個用小碗放着的蟹肉是很creamy的,可以拉出一絲絲的蟹肉,嘴內的那分質感跟鮮味,也令人回味。切得薄片的Beetroot salmon也精彩; duck & chicken parfait質感很creamy; ham rock terrine可以塗在麵包上,但單吃已精彩。

USDA Prime Rib:接着是吃主菜的時候,又一次的遇上帶骨牛扒,這個的賣相總是不失望的,連那顆大骨頭,看起來浩浩蕩蕩的。肉質是中間粉紅色,圍邊的部分是深咖啡 色,肉質腍身而細緻,很強,牛魔王是會喜歡的吧。個人喜歡肉香極濃郁的,假如肉香更強,我是會更愛不惜手的。

48 hour slow cooked Pork belly:我是喜歡這個豬腩,脆皮的部分燒得香口,沒有過分賣弄油脂,但肉質鬆化甘香,層次也豐富,挺有水準的,好吃。這個還是可以配Yokshire pudding吃的, 我相信很多時候Yorkshire pudding也是可以沾醬吃的吧。

Roasted Corn-fed chicken with black truffle & thyme: 雞肉的部分也做得不錯,一吃之下也能吃到了嫰滑的雞肉,加弓香草和黑松露,但主僕分明,沒有喧賓奪主,相比別的主菜,這個燒雞是稍稍走比較平實的路線,但 已是高於平常吃到的水準。

Whole roasted Sea bass with fennel and mixed herbs:在我吃過的英國菜中,而原條魚上菜的真不常見 (我吃過的英國菜中多是用魚柳的部分吧),但論貌相,味道和質感也相當有驚喜。鱸魚肉身雪白而嫩身,而且味道沒有雪水或淡而無味的感覺,好吃,是全晚我最 喜歡的一道。

Apple crumble with vanilla custard, brandy snaps, strawberry eton mess, lemon trifle shots:最後的甜品部分也精緻,說得上是tasting portion的,4種甜品皆是相當輕怡的,應該也是英式的甜品。聞說蘋果金寶是The Pawn的名物之一,有細片蘋果跟微酸度,小杯子中的硬脆粒最為討喜;Strawberry eton mess是眾甜品中最輕怡,味道偏淡身的,在吃飽後來一杯Lemon Trifle也來得討喜合適。Brandy snap是那個捲起來的脆筒,外層薄脆得很,也是挺有特色的。

Having enjoyed a good meal here about a year ago this was our second visit.We ordered the potted shrimp to start, a simple and mildly spiced dish to bring back memories of the British seaside. Dissapointingly prawn was substituted for the shrimp and the rather small portion was lacking in seaside flavour and way overpriced at $100+.Fish and chips arriveded with perfectly cooked crispy batter but a textureless fish filling. Victorian Farm Lamb Rack was reqested medium rare but was presented without a hint of pink, totally overcooked, and for a resteraunt that used to be known for large portions the teaspoon of mash potato, three broad beans and carrots that accompaniend the burnt offering were decidedly mean.

Service was good and attentitive.

With a decent cocktail, glass of Malbec and a soft drink we left feeling that the $900 spent could have been better used elsewhere. This was the type of cooking that gives British food a bad name.

我地答: [We will share!] , 佢之後碌大隻眼話 [you share? are u sure?], 我心諗唔通好細?唔夠三個人食?其實碟Mussel 有十幾隻!乜三個人share會好出奇咩?
之後叫完main course, 佢問[do you want any side dishes?], 我地覺得唔係咁吸引,所以話NO! 佢突然轉講廣東話再問—次[我問你地要唔要side dish 呀!?],我地答咗佢啦,佢聽唔到又以為我地唔識英文??
跟住at last, 佢問要Sparkling water or still water? 我老公當時玩緊電話,冇留意佢問題,佢竟然拉長聲調再問[Do you prefer S....park...ling water or s....till water???]
我晤明如果甘晤想做香港人張台, 不如咪過黎落單啦!

另外有一兩位年輕男waiter都係木囗木面,全程未見過任何waiter笑過!
终結呢間我地期待試已久嘅餐廰,極之失望!
材料好但係敗在服務差同食物凍!

起初看見賣相,還以為是風乾火腿,原來是天然風乾鴨胸肉!鴨胸油潤帶騷香,味道有點似金華火腿,伴上酸莓子同吃,不但平衡了油膩感,亦今人吃得胃口大開,這就是真正「Appetizer」- 開胃菜的意思。

外表古舊的和昌大押雖然是香港保育文物建築之一,建築物已有逾百年歷史,但好幾年前已活化成樓高四層的英國餐廳和酒吧,逃過被拆卸的厄運 。餐廳環境和擺設甚有懷舊古典的氣息,室內比較熱鬧而燈色更昏暗,如果是想安安靜靜談心的話,露台可能更適合 。不過夏天的露台位置熱得我們大汗淋漓 ,要是有出會噴冷水的風扇(像大排檔那種)就好了。這次我們來試試晚市的restaurant week menu,雖然我們第一次來不能比較,但總體來說,氣氛比食物好多了 。服務態度殷勤有禮,我們點的菜都是兩個侍應同時端來的,倒酒什麼的都是同時進行,因此不用等對方食物到來才可以吃 。前菜我們點了Butter Poached Salmon almond purée, wood sorrel, leek & beetroot 和 Seared & Marinated Yellow Tail Tuna granny smith & salt-baked celeriac salad. 主菜點了Hanger Steak parsley & bone marrow sauce, smoked garlic purée & c

三文魚普遍就是兩種煮法,不是得香巴巴,就是得入口即融(慢煮三文魚已成一個趨勢,也成為很多人想吃到的煮法。
),而如果是煮的話,有筋的三文魚真的除了吐出來就只有硬嚥

所以呢,吃到這個煮得軟中帶韌的前菜時還真是有點掃興
。底下杏仁打成的puree和旁邊的紅菜頭也作不了任行提味或中和的的作用

如果本身三文魚是好吃的就不需要這種不搭的配菜作裝飾吧

用厚重木砧板端上的牛排看似架勢十足
,但在燈光暗暗的環境下看到這五塊同樣陰沉的肉塊時也難讓人垂涎

的厚道切得剛好,所以儘管牛的這部位欠缺油花全是肌肉,也沒有覺得份量太大
。可是,要求的medium rare煎得太老了,咬不開
!我喜歡有點嚼勁的肉質,但這個實有點太過了
切不開、咬不斷,真的很難給什麼好評。而且肉在木板上涼得超快
,而主菜在我們還在吃前菜的時候就送上
,到後來而己經不想碰這冷冷的牛排了
炸薯條倒不錯,看來在這裡還是點pub food最好

或許是我孤陃寡聞,我真的從未在西餐廳吃過好吃的黑鱸魚
,中式的煮魚往往更合我意,魚肉是很滑,但問題是它凍得極快,把可怕的魚腥味帶出來
又凍又腥的煎魚還不是一點的不討好
要煎得脆很容易,但是否煮得香就很講究魚本身了
,配菜的馬鈴薯和底下的紅酒汁又是有點莫名奇妙的配搭
。但兩款主菜比較的話,牛排還是比較沒有這樣讓人掃興

甚"求其"的烤桃配早已半融的雪糕

外表不精緻都算了,誠意同樣缺少。烤桃沒有調味,桃就是桃味,你我在家也能做到
。很難理解餐廳何解要把熱的桃子軟雪糕放在一起,就算在冬天這雪糕想不融也難吧?
薰衣草味是吃到了,但開心果味不見了。這甜點是怎麼一回事?

葡萄乾蛋糕只是在外國超市prepacked蛋糕的味道
葡萄乾的味道很重,蛋糕較滯,作為餐後甜點有點太多了,伯爵茶雪糕同樣只是軟雪糕,味道是吃得出來,但也融得太快了


這頓晚餐唯一可以讚的只有另叫的雞尾酒,也是我唯一會再去的理由

它們雞尾酒的種類甚多,看他們的Drink list已經甚有驚喜
。我們點了Earl grey VodkaLavender bellini煙薰很特別,味道也很到位


總體來說,The Pawn的食物只有驚,沒有喜。

我們點到的食物水準平平,索價也沒有很合理
。Restaurant week的作用本身不就是一個宣傳活動,讓未嘗過的食客試試餐廳的撚手菜,增加往後的人氣麼?
可是,The Pawn倒讓很多第一次光臨的食客失望掃興。下次除了來Happy hour,應該不會再來用膳了

每次坐車經過這座當鋪,都覺得好特別。今次restaurant week,成功訂到枱,幫襯下。我哋行樓梯,第一層係酒吧,陳設古舊。穿過酒吧,終於揾到客上餐廳。我哋張枱係露台,可以望到電車路。餐廳嘅人手似乎唔夠,坐低好耐,侍應先有時間攞杯水同餐包俾我哋3個。餐廳把一個細小的圓餐包分成4份,份量可以,但唔知點解看起來總有點寒酸。前菜Beetroot and smoked cheddar salad—D菜都算新鮮主菜Marston's battered sole and chips—炸䊢唔太硬,好大件魚,薯條都脆Short-rib of beef—味道濃,有牛肉味,但有點膩甜品Malted hot chocolate mousse with shortbread—普通,無驚喜Roasted plum crumble with vanilla custard—好無誠意,plum好草率甘放係隻碟度依度嘅食物水準麻麻,賣相不夠靚,服務其實OK,但人手唔夠囉。如果當佢係一個旅遊景點,都值得去的。

Most of the restaurants were fully booked real quick during restaurant week!!! When I booked the table at The Pawn, it was the last 2 seats!! Really lucky!!!! Table for 2 were booked on Friday night at 8pm for me & my cousin.We walked into the restaurant from the front door, up to stairs toward 1/F of the restaurant. We walked into the restaurant from the front door, up to stairs toward 1/F of the restaurant. The music was so strong that I didn’t really understand how people would enjoy the conversation when obviously everyone need to shout to each other.

When we arrived the 1/F at the bar, we told the waitress that we booked a table through diningcity.com for the restaurant week special priced menu. However, the waitress was clearly very busy with the service that she just pointed us to follow another waiter to take the lift to 2/F at the back side of the building. All this made us very confused.

Anyway, we settled down at our table on the balcony. When we arrived, seats inside were just half filled up & not much people sat outdoor. Luckily there was fans on top, otherwise it’ll be a bit really too hot.
After we settled down, one waiter just came up with the restaurant week menu. He simply just chucked the menu on the table without saying much. What a service!!

My cousin’s choice: Seared & Marinated Yellow Tail Tuna, Hanger Steak & Eccles Cake with Earl Grey Cream.
My choice: Butter Poached Salmon, Pan-Roasted Sea Bass & Roasted Peaches with Lavender Honey & Pistachio Ice Cream.

After the ordering, the waiter actually offered us sparking water or still water. Well….we prefer tap water, which is free. It’s not necessary being charge extra for just a cup of water.

Bread was served up before the official meal. The bread wasn’t hot at all. Was it suppose to be like this? The bread was presented on a heavy block of wood board with salt, pepper & tomato butter for seasoning. The tomato butter tasted quite interesting. The bread tasted better with salt, pepper & butter all together. It’s just the bread wasn’t hot!! Kind of a letdown.

This butter poached salmon was “OH-SO-TASTY!!!!!” The texture of the salmon was so silky & creamy. It’s almost melted in your mouth. The salmon goes really well with the almond purée. The preserved leek & beetroot added a bit of tangy flavor to this dish.

Perfectly cooked tuna!! Still pink & juicy inside. The crunchy granny smith & celeriac salad on top of the tuna was spot-on!!! “Refreshing” is the word for this dish! Perfect for summer.
The meal started to go downhill from this point onward!!!!

The skin on the sea bass was still crispy, which was the highlight of this dish. However, the taste of sea bass was like stream fish. YUCK! Tasted a bit better though with the red wine sauce. The glazed parsnips was nice! The truffled potato puffs wasn’t an very outstanding element on this dish, kind of neglect it.

The steak was cooked in medium raw. I’m not sure is it because I got the piece at the side, so it tasted a bit chewy to me. But I believe it’s a nice steak. The bone marrow sauce was a bit too salty. It doesn’t taste like bone marrow at all, it’s more like a very concentrated beef sauce. The chips on the other hand was very nice to dip in the bone marrow sauce or the garlic purée.

After the fantastic starter, the main was a bit disappointing.

I don’t even bother to Photoshop or do anything with this picture! ‘Cause i know it’s hopeless!! The ice-cream was almost all melted when it was served up. The roasted peaches was looked like a few slides of roasted potato. The ice-cream was running all over on the plate. Couldn’t taste any lavender honey at all. Pistachio flavor of the ice-cream wasn’t too standout. Kind of regret that I didn’t order the Chocolate & Cherry Arctic Roll!!!! I believe chocolate couldn’t go wrong in any way!!

At least this dessert was much better looking than mine!
The pastry of the eccles cake was flaky, which was nice. The flavor of the cream was too subtle that almost couldn’t taste any earl grey at all. There were some earl grey powder was laying under the cream though.

As the conclusion for the whole meal, the starter was the best of all 3 courses. The dessert was completely failure! The main was acceptable, but didn’t ‘wow’ me.

The service was acceptable, except at the start. There was one waitress kept coming back to us & asking this & that, which is nice.

We had a look at the normal a la carte dinner menu, which seems pretty ordinarily to me. Not sure if I would give them a 2nd chance for going again, neither lunch nor dinner.
But as a dessert/ afternoon tea freak, I would love to try their traditional Victorian afternoon tea.

P.S: Restaurant weekly is extended from 19-25 Aug!!!! Another chance to eat some good food with relatively reasonable price.
