Ever since I moved here, I am often sad I can't get a casual steak and beer. Something I can easily get back home. But when you order steak here, it's usually expensive and sometimes not that good. Then I discovered this place called The Bottle & Steak. The Bottle & Steak is a restaurant that serves exactly that. Meat and beer. The Bottle & Steak is a restaurant that serves exactly that. Meat and beer. Located at one end of First Street in the Sai Ying Pun area, we found this place buzzing on a Friday night and decided to give it a try.
It's not very big. One area is the open kitchen. There are a few tables that were all full. But the most interesting aspect of the restaurant? And the whole reason we were drawn in? One wall was a wall of fridges filled with bottles of beer. Much like a convenience store.
The restaurant boasts over 60 varieties of craft beer. Each bottle is clearly labelled and priced. Just like a convenience store. They also have cider for those that don't like beer as well as fancy soda for those that can't drink alcohol. A good variety of wine is also available. They have a great take away deal for beer as well.
The concept? Grab what you want from the fridge and they will pop open the cap for you. It's casual and yet it lets the diner take a better look at the selections that you can't get from a paper menu.
They also offer food. Thus the steak part of the restaurant title. Menu is in English only. There is no Chinese and no 10% service charge. They offer a variety of meat as well as one vegetarian dish. All mains come with a gravy, salad and fries. The menu isn't large but I like it that way. It seems to focus on what is important and do it right. They also have a children's menu so you don't have to worry this place is not for kids. There was a family dining when we were there.
Boyfriend had a Brewdog Overwork Sour City IPA Beer ($52). Sour beer had a bit of a trend in past years so if you do like something sour, this is worth a try. It was extremely sour and crisp. Almost like a sour candy.
I had a La Chouette Apple Cider ($42). This is seriously one of my favorite ciders so I was pleased they served this as I seem to not be able to find this every where. The taste of apples is strong without the bitter malt taste that I don't like in some ciders. The amount of carbonation is not too much as well. Something else I do love about this.
As the night went on, I also had a Macarlo Blood Orange Soda ($22). This is a soft drink from Italy and another drink I was familiar with as I had this on my last vacation in Italy. The blood orange is my favorite of the three choices they had for this brand. Actually, blood orange is my preferred taste for Italian soda so I guess I'm biased. Refreshingly citrus with a lot of fruit juice. Not too much carbonation.
The steak and pork, we discovered was made by sous vide, then grilled and finally flamed before serving it. So we decided to order a steak and pork to share.
This is the USDA Flat Iron Steak ($128). There were two slices with nice grill marks. The fries were the thick cut ones and were nice and fluffy. Not seasoned enough but there was a fantastic gravy to dip into. The side of salad was actually dressed. I know it seems like a small thing but how many times have a I been to places where the side of salad had either no dressing or it was lazily poured on top and not properly tossed so each leaf had a coating of dressing without being drowned. Cheers to that!
And the steak? Perfectly medium rare. It was so tender with a strong beef taste. Perfectly seasoned as well.
Australian Pork Rack ($158) was even better. A good thick cut. Not over cooked and well seasoned. The pork tasted wonderful and was so tender and juicy.
Probably one of the best restaurants I've had this year. A great vibe with delicious food that is honest value for money. Service was friendly. But what we loved most? The fridge of bottles of beer in the back where you can choose what you want in a very casual manner. Great concept.
