Every time I came the owners (2 sisters) were there warmly greeting me. Sometimes I chose to consume the rolls in the shop they'd plate them nicely too .
The Rolls are wrapped in plastic on all sides, though not environmentally friendly but surely this helps to keep the integrity of the delicate Rolls.
I only tried the regular sized Rolls once, i.e. Maple Syrup (Regular $26). Unfortunately the top layer aka "skin" of the cake was stripped away after peeling off the plastic film . And the cake was sort of rough in texture. Nevertheless the flavour combination of maple syrup and walnuts was classic, and I loved that they put the walnut bits inside the cake roll which helped a bit with the texture. I ate this when the weather was cooler, and although it was cold out there, the mellow maple syrup flavour reminded me of hot pancakes!
At other times I would mainly eat the bite-sized Mini Rolls ($10@)
- Black Sesame: a signature item here, I'd give 3 thumbs up! Very rich in sesame aroma. And I think the black look of it is really cool even though the "black bamboo powder" which gives this colour does not contribute to any flavour.
- Chocolate Banana: the banana part is really scanty, probably better with the regular sized one. Not very chocolat-y but I liked their gesture of making the cream inside chocolate as well!
- Earl Grey: too dry! And pitifully lacking in the characteristic tea fragrance. I'm actually glad to see it being removed from the lineup, but, if Roll can impove just a bit on the cake texture and make the tea a bit stronger, I'd be happy to welcome it back.
- Green Tea - OK, nothing of a 'wow', but consistent with the other roll products here, the cream is worth mentioning - thick, velvetly smooth and light and not sickly sweet - be warned that it would melt really quick in the summer heat!
- Chestnut - good as well, the chestnut puree is in the cream layer, quite rich and satisfying.
- Coffee - a delightful match with chunks of refreshing pear bits.
I haven't tried Roll's macarons or cookies yet, anyway I'm not so eager to do so after reading the reviews on them here on OR...better stick with the rolls.
