A friend of mine wanted to take me out for a belated birthday dinner so we decided to visit Outback Steakhouse in TST East. However, I was not impressed with the professionalism of the waiter who served us. However, I was not impressed with the professionalism of the waiter who served us. He was moody, unfriendly (he seemed to grunt at times) and never cracked a smile. When we were ready to order our main course, he seemed pre-occupied and walked away halfway through our order to attend to someone else.
After our order was taken, it took ages for the food to arrive, not to mention we were probably one of the only tables that were not served bread. We had to ask another server, one who was slightly more friendly than our assigned waiter, who promptly served us our bread. I was also surprised to find that they don't serve cappuccinos (not quite sure I have ever been to a restaurant that doesn't serve cappuccino) so settled for tea instead. My friend ordered a lemon squash which she seemed to enjoy.
I was appalled when the waiter handed us the bill straight after our main course. We didn't even have time to decide if we wanted dessert, let alone being handed a menu to have a look at what they had to offer. It wasn't even close to closing time, so I am not sure what this guy's issue was. He was just a miserable human being. While there were a lot of waiters on duty everyone seemed totally lost and the service of tables was a mess. Understandably, it was a Saturday night but how hard is it to serve customers with a bit of respect? I felt rushed and got the impression they wanted us out of there.
The food itself was fine - I have nothing to complain about. My friend and I both ordered the Alice Spring Chicken which came with Aussie fries. The food was hot and the honey mustard dressing that accompanied the chicken was delicious.
My friend informed me that at the end of the receipt, there was a link to a website you could visit to fill out a survey to detail our "dining experience". Before I logged onto Open Rice, I filled out the survey to express my dissatisfaction. What was interesting was that when I tried to fill in more information regarding the areas that I had an issue with, there was a very limited number of characters I could fill out, perhaps another genuine lack of interest in their customers' "overall dining experience"?
If you want good food, then this Outback is something to definitely try. Just brace yourself for the possibility of some of the most pathetic waitering you can get in Hong Kong. NOT IMPRESSED!
