I dined here with my husband on a Saturday evening. We had high hopes for this restaurant, as we live nearby and there are not many options for fine dining in the area. However, we will not be returning.
Many restaurants in the SAR suffer from a poor value-quality ration, but this was the worst we have encountered after four years in Hong Kong. When paying these prices a diner expects expertly-cooked food, a great ambience, attentive yet not overbearing service, and care and attention given to the food. Meraviglia failed on all counts.
We ordered the Italian roast chicken ($268) and the baby lamb rack ($348). The chicken was succulent with very crispy skin. Unfortunately, the lamb was extremely over-salted and inexpertly cooked. Presentation-wise, it looked as if it had been hacked apart with a saw. Although we asked for it medium-rare, two of the ribs were well done and two were medium. This is unacceptable for such an expensive dish. The sides were an afterthought - both dishes came with the same grilled courgette and tomatoes. The potatoes that were advertised as coming with the lamb never arrived. Again, when paying $348 for a dish one expects that the meat will be thoughtfully paired with an interesting side that complements the flavours rather than the same vegetables being slapped on each dish. On a positive note, the bread was very nice.
The aircraft-hanger-like ceiling detracted from the ambience. The decor ranged from tacky to clinical. Four servers attended to our table - the service from three of them was solicitous and unobtrusive. From the fourth, it was patronising and overbearing.
My husband and I both left the restaurant with significantly lighter pockets, still hungry, dispirited, and vowing never to return. This was such a disappointing experience that I was motivated to write my first Openrice review!
