The "Three little pigs" blend, with Mexico, Nicaragua and Guatemala, was as expected from all beans from Central America, bright acidity and clean cup from washed coffee, unlike exotic, funky tasting notes which is typical for African beans. My guess is Mexican (50% - my guess) acting as a base coffee and equal amount of Guat and Nic lend hands to bright and aromatic cup, making this coffee less on ‘body monster’ but a nice and clean cup that is easy to like but may not be tasty enough, particularly those who are more familiar with coffee culture in the western world. The blends after roast (post roasted blend) allows roaster to tailor each particular blend to its full potential and the style at the expense of inconvenience. One could play around this ‘melange’ blend with coffee of different roast level, coffee of different roast date and even blending with ‘itself’ with different roast level, the practice that is common to “IT” single origin espresso these days. You can find this basic blending technique everywhere on the net and you can taste it too at 18 Grams and that’s one of the methods to learn coffee.

As a fan of Central American coffee, I am very biased and really like this blend a lot. I get a nice, bright and clean cup to start my day with; what more can one ask. In addition to the citrusy note, you get the sweetness toward the end of the cup and the lingering darker roasting tone that seemed to be a signature for Glory Coffee.

The clean cup typically won’t show up well in the milk unless it was super dark roasted. This one is no exception. Milk drinker may find the coffee weak and overwhelmed. However, give it a shot, it’s a much more relaxing cup than those punchy dark roasted coffee you get used to.

Toby’s skill on pulling the shot is getting better though consistency is needed as this takes time. The espresso has a nice and clean profile overall, which is a great improvement; however, there are no layers of tastes one felt like dipping into on every sip that you drink which is very common phenomenon at hkcoffee.com, the roaster, espresso and ristretto at Crema Coffee and, at times, Barista Jam. The milk drink is very common one would typically say very good vs. Australian based café places but I was spoiled yesterday by the rich and velvety texture I always had at Crema so this makes me feel like drinking a ‘watery’ cup. This is not a big mistake or flaw but something one can improve if they like the style.

Egg wasn't fluffy enough and the bacon was kinda undercooked a bit but overall is not too bad.

Among all blends I had 18 Grams, Three Little Pigs blend is my favorite though this might not work out well with the milk crowd. The Black Sheep is a rather versatile and easy to like blend I would consider using it as a house blend though some cult coffee lovers may sneer at its ‘simplicity’ but don’t let those people hold you back from trying this easy to like blend. The wild and funky Dirty Duck blend was very daring and has lots of potential to tweak to one of the great blend that will score well at the expense of time. Silly Monster is the blend I never understood. It remained volatile and unstable all the way and I had too many cups of this blends I’m confused what the roaster really wants. A visit to Crema yesterday gives me a hint that Silly Monster was quite close to Monsooned Malabar Gold which was served at Crema since it opened its door in 2005 and that, to me, concluded that the more stabilized Silly Monster will probably end up in the style of Crema, if it’s ever going to be stabilized at all. To me, a good riddance for Silly Monster. It’s not a bad coffee. On the contrary, it’s good but too indecisive in the blend to become a house blend, IMHO.

And there you have it, an experimental café called 18 Grams as it is going through lots of blends with its master roaster willing to take risk running coffee lab on a big scale like this. This is a kind of charm and interesting take one wouldn’t find it elsewhere, kinda you learn and grow with each new blend, like an armchair traveler exploring an unknown land without sweat if you kept on visiting the café on a periodic basis. Mind you that all of these blends can easily beat all those staled imports hands down and should be considered very good.

***Update: I like the Three Little Pigs blend so I dropped by for another cup in the afternoon. However, I learned that Three Little Pigs received lots of complaints about "sourness" of the coffee and 18 Grams just pulled it.


Instead, I had a Black Sheep blend. Either I don't know how to drink coffee or something is really wrong with Three Little Pigs. I find this Three Little Pigs the best blend so far I had at 18 Grams. At the point of writing this note (9:40PM, Dec 5, 2010), I'm still waiting for the official reason from either Kammie or Gloria on the reason the blend was pulled. This reminded me of my past experience of Hoffman's Winter Espresso blend at Barista Jam as it was pulled when I went back for me in the afternoon, saying it needed 'more' rest while I think it's just right and delicious. I can only hope they reinstate Three Little Pigs in the same shape and form but I don't expect it. Being an "experimental" cafe like 18 Grams, higher chances I won't see it in the same form ever again...

Tonight, I caught wind from a coffee friend that 18 Grams Cafe will soon be opening another 2nd outlet in Mongkok. They are therefore testing quite a few new coffee blends at this shop, before choosing the most suitable one for the Mongkok market, which according to my guesstimation would be more geared towards a heavier bodied and slightly roastily aromatic blend aimed for milk coffee drinks - something a little more familiar and relatable to the younger generations. BLACK SHEEP BLEND - ESPRESSO -

This Espresso was aged for 9 days to develop its flavours when I visited. Without having tried it when it was fresher or aged for longer, its hard to comment on whether this is the ideal ageing period for this blend... This is slightly heavier roasted than the existing Lucky Duck, Silly Monster blends, etc. The addition of the Indian Elkhill Peaberry gave it a distinct 'sweaty savoury note' and balanced body and acidity, and the rest of the blend was slightly spicy, almost musty! It seems my tasting note differs from 18 Gram's own just slightly, but this could be down to the individual shot difference. Overall this was a fairly dark broody espresso with a concentrated body, but surprisingly a fairly thin yet elastic crema. This ended with a dark caramel note and a bit of wild animal fur like aroma.
Its quite a unique blend in my opinion, especially when its found in Hong Kong. I can't register and relate it to any particular country or city's coffee style - its kind of Old World ! Very interesting. It may even go better with milk drinks?

DIRTY DUCK BLEND - CAFFE LATTE -

A first sip of this during familiarisation and I fully understood where the 'dirty' description came from. This has a fairly dry gritty feel in the mouth instantly, even with the addition of heated milk in the form of Caffe Latte - its characteristics are definitely representative of a major contribution from non-washed (non wet processed) coffee beans. The crema level was almost bubbly and dark-brown in colour. I thought this tasted slightly almond-like and woody but finished on the bitter spectrum, rather than burnt and astringent initially (if that description makes any sense! Astringent to me hits you more upfront quickly and is way sharper..), but somehow this settled down to be sweeter, but in the mouth after a while, a sort of strange acidity lined the palate during the finish.
This blend as a Caffe Latte reminds me of a commercial coffee on steroids! Personally, this carried too much dirty earthiness taste and can be more balanced. *Note: 'Dirty' does not necessary mean its a negative trait in coffees, this description is actually meant to imply that it has some 'DIRT-like, DIRT-y profile similar to soil', not necessarily unclean and yucky 'dirty' with attributes of disturbance within. I find many coffee drinkers automatically associating this term with being unbalanced, when sometimes it can actually be a good trait if its done right!

My preference is for the Black Sheep for now.
Or the Silly Monster as blended and roasted during early October was fantastic! Let's see what the future blends will bring soon.

Have always wanted to find a 'real' coffee shop in HK and a friend recommended to check this place out.Tried their cappuccino, it's got a rich and earthy aroma, the bitterness is just right and the milk frothing is handled quite well that creates the silky texture. Although it's a little shop at the corner, but it's the ambience that makes it special, with a few tables inside and a bench table where people can stand, enjoy their coffee and who knows, they might spot some interesting scenery around the area.

It's definitely a little treasure! Would love to go back more often and try their food menu next time.

I typically won’t repeat my note on a café I did recently but I changed my mind after a cup of espresso this morning at 18 Grams.The new blend, Black Sheep, clicked, IMHO. The new blend, Black Sheep, clicked, IMHO. The blend of Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica & India Peaberry, a malt beer tasting note according to its roaster, was not try to be everything for everybody but was much more low key and subdued, much easier to like than its previous Silly Duck, which, to me, screams ‘look at me’ in my face almost all the time with cornucopia of tasting notes that will score well but a bit too showy for me. The Black Sheep blend was more of a traditional coffee with a hint of acidity to help show case its freshly roasted pedigree which is typically sorely missed by those imported one, particularly the one that’s more than one month that tastes old and staled. For Glory, the go-to drink for black coffee seemed to be a longer pull espresso which has a more balanced cup than its shorter shot ristretto, my typical order for black coffee.

The coffee by itself is rather subdued some ‘fruity’ fan may sneer at the coffee; however, this is what I call ‘let coffee be coffee’ kinda thing, i.e. a nice, easy to drink and like. The coffee gave a feeling that the roaster finally found a good balance between each tasting note. Some would say it’s boring, particularly those who preferred ‘cult’ coffee with a tooth-aching, all taste forward front and center in your face kind of thing which is nice but I would rather have it once in a while.

I still sensed the ‘trademark’ of Glory Coffee, ie nutty aftertaste and dark roast tone, in this coffee I can only wish they get rid of them but this will stay as it seemed to be its roaster’s favorite. However, I learned how to live with it much better than its previous house blend. Pulled by LAM Sze-Ho, one of the 2010 GBC contestants, the coffee has a relatively nice layer of taste for the type of drink I can only hope he continues to join the GBC next year. Also, it helps that the coffee I had came from the newly opened bag. The barista only filled just enough coffee in the hopper and, to me, this is a good thing than the other way, ie filling the hopper to the brim, allowing the air to do some damage to the bean.
Decent texture and temp but bitter espresso base

The capp was prepared by the other barista. Though it was decent as usual, ie much more velvety texture and right temperature with hint of milk sweetness, there’s a bitter taste in the cup; not the dark chocolate but just a bitter undertone which could be a result of too long pull.

The banana bread was a nice change. It tasted healthy but was quite dried by itself. The accompanied organic honey saved the day from my thought of walking across the street to fill myself up as I don’t really like dry bread itself. Complaint is on its breakfast offering. For Sunday, I would prefer the breakfast offering to last longer than 11AM as this would work well with those who missed breakfast hours elsewhere that seemed to end at 11AM, as if this is a ‘world’ standard.

As I stated earlier, it is less likely anyone will have the same experience that I had at 18 Grams coz it keeps on evolving over time. The good thing is that, with each change, the quality seemed to improve; some a little and some a lot. This round of change, to me, is a significant step ahead of the last one which made me feel more like a sort of experiment/work in progress than a final product vs. the current blend which is more of a reliable coffee one could depend upon. I can’t wait to see how it will be like next time I drop by 18 Grams.

在銅鑼灣食完lunch,已飲完一杯咖啡,行完街,又想再搵個地方坐坐,就黎左呢度。大概下午 4 點幾,黎到只有兩個客人,所以即刻有位坐低啦。

其實食完lunch唔太肚餓,但又想搵d野食下,所以要了最簡單的香蕉蛋糕配有機蜜糖,飲品就要了latte,睇openrice簡介先知原來佢個香蕉蛋糕係店主既媽咪既配方,今日食過又覺得真係唔錯喎,幾時banana都係我的最愛~ XD。

雖然店內環境唔係好大,不過好似今日咁唔係太多客人又唔滿的都可以慢慢坐下hea下,都ok舒服的。

先講個蛋糕,其實我覺得佢唔駛配個有機蜜糖都得,因為加左蜜糖反而太甜,味道唔係太夾會蓋哂個蛋糕既味道咁,我下次一定叫佢唔好俾蜜糖我,廢事浪費啦。個香蕉蛋糕其實就咁都已經幾好食,由於焗過所以表面脆脆地,食落都係有d熱的,幾好。蛋糕好軟熟,味道幾清甜,香蕉味有但唔會太突出,我覺得幾好喎,因為好多人都唔特別好香蕉味既食物架嘛。

Came here during the weekend. Ordered all day breakfast and coffee. There was only one person in the shop who took order, made the coffee and cooked the food. It was empty when we came in, but then others started to arrive, and the staff kept on making coffee and had no time to cook the breakfast! We were served coffee and the toasts first and when the breakfast finally arrived, the toasts were already cold. The coffee was fine, the food was pretty average and not worth the $78 we paid. Th

The cafe could also do with a more friendly staff member! The shop is very small and can only sit 8 to 10 and you certainly feel very cramped. Overall I would not say this is a relaxing place to spend your Sunday morning. I can think of much better alternatives.

今次主要吾系讚佢既食物同咖啡......而系佢既環境,店仔細細,但系環境我真系比佢十個"讚"響鬧市中一個好舒服既角落,中意cafe既朋友仔,真系值得一去,店員nice~~~識左幾個新朋友仔^^

環境: 原本睇食評, 以為間店好歐陸好大, 點知係半open的佈局, 感覺有壓逼感, 唔夠relax~但係有設計過個裝修, 直得欣賞~食物: 唔係太多choice, 份量唔算大, 女士剛好~食物夠light, 食完好舒服! 午餐選了香草芝士多士+沙律, 好味! 好homemade的感覺, 好易整, 可以自己返屋企試整~Coffee: 飲左latte, 唔放糖都唔會苦, 好香! 而且有我至愛的奶泡, 好厚重~~拉花都好靚! 如果個餐可以加大杯咖啡就更好, 唔夠0候!

這家小店的裝修wild得來帶型格!咖啡由咖啡師泡製,加上自家炒製咖啡豆、澳洲藉店主,更設有廠房焙烘咖啡豆,批發絡酒店/餐廳。可惜有這些來頭,我也是不能飲咖啡......唯有試她的另一「自家」啦!就是玉桂富士蘋果脆多士。蘋果粒粒”醬”的甜度,很天然的清香,完全不會太甜。多士微脆,好像有點香草?還是蒜味?很特別,總之是好吃啊!Earl Grey茶包,一般貨式,no comment。因為地方細小,但店員多多,想睇清楚揀咩食,好像都給各店員望實晒,有點不自在。其實仲有cakes、自家製無花果醬、配黑麥麵包,都非常想試!留待下次再吃再吃!

就是玉桂富士蘋果脆多士。蘋果粒粒”醬”的甜度,很天然的清香,完全不會太甜。多士微脆,好像有點香草?還是蒜味?很特別,總之是好吃啊!
Earl Grey茶包,一般貨式,no comment。
因為地方細小,但店員多多,想睇清楚揀咩食,好像都給各店員望實晒,有點不自在。
其實仲有cakes、自家製無花果醬、配黑麥麵包,都非常想試!
留待下次再吃再吃!

不敢相信在繁忙的銅鑼灣有一像這樣個的地方, 它讓我想起在海外讀書的日子. 我很高興看到這裡的人用心做咖啡, 必須嘗試這裡的 banana bread. 另一個必須嘗試是78元 all day breakfast.Only pity is the shop is very small and can only allow around 10 people to sit indoor. I can see the owner has been trying his/her best and placed another small table outdoor. To owner of this cafe - I hope you can survive the high rent here in HK, glad that you have provided me and other bookworms with this nice little cafe. You are awesome!!!

昨晚經過銅纙灣、忽然想起這咖啡店、見未試過又有時間、便來一試。坐位很少、好在還有二個位、二話不說、立刻坐下;看看店面、看不到、又沒有、再看看餐牌、也知道這裡沒有我喜歡飲的咖啡種類;最後辣椒女選擇了house blend coffee、我就選擇了latte。house blend coffee - 味道偏淡、唔夠咖啡香、飲了一口就放棄了。latte - 咖啡和奶的比例唔多配合、偏苦;花心大細邊、唔多專業、又唔靚,和一般喜歡的味道完全唔同、飲了半杯便走了。沖咖啡的手法、還須要再學習、可能是半途出家吧!可能這裡的沖咖啡方法唔合我們、又可能每人的喜好不同、但這裡就不是我們杯咖啡。

Yeah! It is 唔食都知唔好食. It is my first time to write food review in English. Why do I write this in English this time? Because I understand that the one who roasts the bean here cares our comment. Considering his easiness to read the comment (though Google Translate is so handy and user-friendly), I made this decision and I did it (oh gosh! Writing English!!!!!)

I wrote a food review for Café Corridor for Felix’s Blends a year ago. To be honest, I normally bought his coffee bean home because its stable quality as well as the shop is at the Center of CWB. Now I have one more option to buy Glory Coffee’s Beans home and make it myself. It is nice!

I bought 100g of Silly Monster this time. The pricing of HK$45 / 100g is not very expensive, but already a bit higher than the Terra Blend and Acqua Blend and even more expensive than the Fuoco Blend and Venta Blend.

Having heard from the Glory Coffee on Openrice saying that the last batch of Silly Monster blend in 18 grams had been roasted too dark for his liking. It was said that it would had been nicer with a light roast brewed with high temp. So what I would like to say is that the taste of the espresso coming out from my machine is really a bit lack of body. To make this review more presentable, please find the summary below: (REALLY LIKE A LAB REPORT! Gosh!!!!)

Date of buying the bean: 19th September 2010

Date of grinding the bean: Same as above as they are ground by a male barista @ 18gram
(The barista did a good job and he is really knowledgeable. The powder is still cool after grinding. If the powder gets hot from the grinding machine. This enhances the goodies escaping from coffee bean.)

Date of brewing my cup of Espresso / Cappuccino: 20th September 2010
(Though the grinding had not been done well before brewing the coffee, I tasted the shot which was made on the day after grinding to make my evaluation. Sorry that I am too poor to have my own grinding machine!!)

Crema: It is not too thick in my cup! But please note that my machine works poorly in this aspect and I personally feel that this blend could produce a beautiful, oily, stable, thick, crema with great aroma.

Smell: The smell is very nice. It is complicate enough for me to use my nose to check its smell. I used almost a minute to enjoy that. A mix aroma that can be regarded as fruity, choco-like, or even flowery smell had been stayed in my nasal cavity for a long long while. It is wonderful!

Taste: Yup! The taste is really less striking comparing to my shot that was taken in 18 grams. So does it mean that this batch was lightly roasted? Yes! No! May be?! The taste does not thick enough and the body is too weak and thin. It is really unexpected considering its smell is so great. In fact, it is not too bad because the bitterness is gentle while the sourness is close to zero. The impotent sweetness of the bean might be due to the fact that the batch was only lightly roasted. Therefore it might not be appropriate to prepare a cup of espresso. I finally prove this since my Cappuccino is so sweet even I did not add any sugar in my cup. The lower sweetness of espresso base gives an ideal platform for lactose to play around on my taste bud.

However, I personally like Dark Roasted and Full-Bodied Coffee. I might pick a blend that is not suitable for me this time. I would be glad to know if there is any blend that would fulfill my purpose.

Please note that my review above might not be accurate because my machine @ home SUCKS!!

After all, do I have concrete idea to say whether it is worthwhile to pay a little premium to buy Glory Coffee? Sorry I can’t tell because my taste buds need different kind of stimulation, thereby a little price variation doing fine for me.

講完外觀,正式要講下杯咖啡啦。
點左一杯普通既熱latte,價錢...唔記得左。
不過佢既咖啡味濃度確實係令我好記得同好深刻。
平時我都會去星爸x 買latte,但係每一次飲完,
個種咖啡後既苦澀酸味都會停留好耐,令我唔係咁Like。
今次係18 Grams,我試到一杯令我覺得好delux同relex既latte,淡淡既味道,
令人好舒服,入口前段既milky唔會令你覺得好似張住張住咁,
入口後既咖啡味唔算太濃,奶同咖啡既份量剛剛好,正。
個種淡淡既味道令人好relex,反而重口味既會令人覺得好tension。
雖然係淡淡既味道,但唔代表佢偷工減料又或者沖得唔好,因為咖啡豆好明顯係自家製既。

當日鋪頭得2位工作人員,而且都幾忙下,因為full hse,
而且有班遊客叫左咖啡之餘仲叫左蛋糕同full daybreakfast,所以佢2個都好忙。
沖呢杯latte比我既店員叫「Grace」,我諗應該係part time員工(8掛聽到....),
係咁忙既時間,佢都可以用心沖到一杯好味既latte,我真係覺得唔錯。
有好既咖啡豆都要有好既調劑師先得,
所以大家要試到佢沖既latte,可能真係要碰碰運氣啦。

咖啡本身有提神作用,但係每一樣飲品既用處只係基於個人既喜好而有所變化,
本人喜好輕鬆既都市生活,所以太重口味既咖啡只會令我覺得好有壓逼感,
到底係要relex定提神,當然係睇飲用者本身既取向啦。
如果都鍾意飲latte帶黎既relex,可以落去試下呀。

由於係地鋪關係, 呢度真係超級細...但係裝修簡約得o黎好靚, 與同樣在銅鑼灣o既hit the road 有得fight~我覺得呢度比較出色o既反而係食物唔係咖啡佢個 all day breakfast 超貴, 唔包咖啡都要$78, 不過食落又覺得值呢個價麵包好香好鬆軟, 我估佢o地係同其他公司買麵包o既, 唔知係邊間呢~相反咖啡偏淡, 我o地total叫o左3杯都係一樣偏淡我果杯capuchino vienna 幾得意, o係其他地方比較少見有時間同朋友tea一tea的話, 呢度係一個唔錯o既地方~
