The chips were great, freshly cooked whilst I waited, a little crispy, inside they were fat and moist with fluffy potato. As you can see from the photo some of the chips were cut with the potato skin still on and some were cut from the middle of the potato, this mix was great, both kinds were crispy on the outside, the skin just gave a slightly different texture. Also, they were nicely salted and vinegared just before being served, (see the close up photo), the granules of salt were still visible. The portion was well sized, I wanted food but I wasn't especially hungry, if I had been really hungry I would have needed a pie or something too. Likewise the garlic sauce was just enough (even though it looked scant in the serving pot), and it had a nice flavour to it, creamy with just a little sharpness. (On that note, the range of dipping sauces is pretty interesting, I believe ketchup is free but further to that you can purchase: tartar sauce, mayo, garlic aioli, honey mustard, brown sauce, salsa, hot sauce and sweet Thai chilli - something for everyone there.)
But...
The service was comically awful (as in so bad it was funny). Below is a pretty accurate transcript of the conversation we had.
Me: Hello, can I have the original chips please (pointing to the picture of box of chips with no topping).
Server she: Er....fjyjgafjggb (although English seems to be her first language this was pretty much unintelligible and my closest guess was that she meant they were sold out).
Me: Do you have any left.
Server she: You mean chips with nothing? (Looking awfully confused at her fellow server.)
Me: Yes, just chips and a garlic sauce.
Server he: You mean you want chips with nothing?
Me: Yes
Server he: You you can buy sauce.
Me: Yes, can I get the garlic sauce please.
Server he: Would you like salt and vinegar?
Me: Yes please.
Server he to server she: What sauce?
Server she: *shrug* What sauce?
Me: Garlic
~ at this point server he goes off to cook and server she takes over ringing up my order ~
Server she: Do you want salt and vinegar?
Me: Yes
I have a lot of patience for such things and I will never be rude (even if I probably should be), as I understand that such jobs often come with crappy hours, crappy pay and crappy customers. To this end I feel like I maybe over-appreciate staff who do show a little care, attention or friendliness. However, when service is this farcical it is very noticeable. I know these staff have the capacity for good service as I pass this way once or twice a week and they often seem to be chatting to customers or a little more smiley so maybe I just got an off day. The last time I walked by they were talking about the music the stall was playing (it wouldn't sound out of place in one of the trendier Wan Chai nightclubs), it's always loud and beat-heavy.
Anyway, I will return for the tasty chips (and nothing - although if they start serving a vegetable pie I would get that for sure), they're a good value stomach-filler. Maybe I will unlock the secret of happy service next time.
