I've always wanted to try the one in Wanchai after reading the reviews... but suddenly they opened in OC3~ right up my lane~~ so that was a good surprise!
We arrived on Sunday at around 2pm... basically the whole restaurant was full with just one empty table that I caught at the corner of my eye. The manager seated us promptly. The decor of the restaurant is very simple, white tables, sofa and seats, with a large glass window to look into the kitchen.
The menu is quite comprehensive and they had a lunch set menu for $48 including soup and rice.
We ordered a lunch B - 蟲草蒸雞 and a lunch C 蓮藕悶鴨. The free soup was carrots, corn with pork bone, which was very homely and tasty. It reminded me of the soup my mum boils at home~ and it had lots of corn pieces! Definitely a ++ already~ We also ordered iced lemon tea and hot lemon tea (thinking it came with the set).
Not long after, the table next to us complained that her food was still not there yet~ the waitress checked for her and come back saying that the one she wanted was sold out~ so she changed to another lunch set...
Luckily for us, our lunch C arrived not long after and we started munching... the taste was good although my husband complained that there was too much bone and not much meat for a dish that size... but we both agreed the taste was excellent~
Back to the lady on the table next to us, she waited again and no food came, so she asked again and they said the lunch set she wanted was again SOLD OUT! hahaha (feeling sorry for this poor lady by now) and they suggested she change to the afternoon tea set~ which they took another 10 minutes to get her the menu... I really commend this lady for waiting this long and STILL staying there... Another table across from us waited longer than us and started to complain before they were told that both the lunch sets they had ordered were sold out... so to "comfort" them, the waitress gave them a dish of something unknown? which exacerbated the situation! By this time, the customers were so angry, they were like "what are you trying to make me eat??" And they walked out... well at least they got free soup!
The boss finally realised something was very wrong with the orders so he himself went around to each table asking what people were missing, which I applaud him for. Although the poor lady on the next table still waited another 30 minutes before her fried noodles turned up.
Anyways, back to out lunch, our rice didn't come so we asked this young waitress for rice, and she was so lost~ she asked us what rice we wanted AFTER reading the order chit??? so why did/didn't she read it??? Maybe she can't read Chinese despite being local....
My husband had white rice while I had the healthy option of red rice... both were cooked properly~ At this point, I said to my husband "So when do you think they will tell us that lunch set B is sold out?" And in about 5 minutes, the manager came around asking what we were missing and told us that lunch set B had sold out! No prizes for guessing correctly~~
We decided to cancel the lunch set B, as the size of the lunch was quite decent and we had both had soup and a bowl of rice.
The next surprise was when we went to pay, we were told the drinks were NOT with the set, but you had to pay an additional $8 for the drinks as an add-on, and we weren't the only people to think this. My husband felt conned but I guess $8 is not too bad.
Overall, the food is decent for the price and because the price is on par with Maxim, the servings are slightly larger and taste is definitely better.
题外话/补充资料:
When we were eating, I overheard the boss talking to the next table about how their renovations were delayed and they were lacking staff because some people had suddenly resigned. I guess I feel like some of their staff are actually trying hard to serve well but some of the young ones are just... idiotic??
They were trying to promote the place as a restaurant more than a fast food chain, because they cook their dishes one by one, rather than have it all ready made but most of their customers don't understand. I guess this is because their decor is pretty much like a cafe so that's what people expect. And the prices they charge are similar to cafe pricing. Although, he also mentioned that as promotion, he gave "buy one get one free" to the estates in the surrounding area... where's mine??? :p
