Katsuhachi is a new Japanese restaurant. I didn't know it was new until the staff told me so. They seemed to be enthusiastic about everything. The place quickly filled up during lunch hour, so it was a good sign. The restaurant was simple enough though it looked familiar. Then I realized it was once the spot of the Kyo Japanese restaurant that I had come to last year for my birthday. It seems that it closed and this place has taken over. I guess they didn't really change the decor.

Lunch menu is extensive and all under $200. Menu is both English and Chinese. There are no photos of the food. You get your basic Japanese sets. All sets include an appetizer, salad and miso soup. It seemed like a pretty good deal. But how was the food? I ordered the executive set lunch set where you can choose two different items.

The staff gave me a glass of Kyoho grape juice. It was not sweet and had a distinct grape taste. They kept refilling my glass of grape juice. I don't know if this is due to the fact they are new but pretty good service anyways. Hope this continues in the future.

Executive lunch set for one ($108). The executive lunch set included an appetizer, salad and miso soup. The menu said I could choose two items from to create the set so I chose five assorted sushi and truffle sushi rice.

Truffle sushi rice came with a raw quail egg to mix with the rice. It also had a lot of truffle paste so you really smelled the pungent truffle smell. There was also flying fish roe, spring onions and crab sticks. Mixing it all up was pretty delicious. Portion size was generous.

Braised pork cubes was tasty enough. There were a lot of pieces to poke about. Texture was springy and had a touch of heat without being too spicy. Nicely done.

Five assorted sushi was whatever the chef considers fresh for the day. What I got was hamichi, salmon, red snapper, scallop and sweet shrimp. The sushi was fresh. Portions were large especially the sweet shrimp. Rice portion was small and packed together well to not fall apart. This was pretty good sushi and definitely unexpected for this price range.

End of my meal, they said lunch sets included dessert (even though it wasn't noted on the menu). Today's dessert was pineapple ice cream. When queried if it was homemade, they said no. But it tasted ok anyways.

Pretty good deal for lunch as food quality was excellent. Portions generous. Prices under $200. Service was friendly. As they are newly opened, they are currently waving the 10% service charge during lunch. Will be back.

Should also note that they have free wifi. Ask for the password and they will give it to you. The wifi is excellent. Super fast and doesn't break.

I was walking around Tang Lung street with my spouse and there was a gentleman passing out flyers for his Japanese restaurant. He was very polite and humble and was not pushy at all - he even excused himself at the end of our conversation so he could return to his restaurant.

We were very impressed with his humbleness and so we decided to go up to the restaurant, and walked in with no expectation... 

They greeted us as if we were old friends. The restaurant was 80% full already too. They allowed us to sit at the sushi bar, and introduced us to the sushi chefs - just like you do to your friends at gatherings! The way the staff talk to each other, you can tell they are friends and treat their guests the same.

We had some of the best sushi I have ever eaten in Hong Kong. I used to live in Tokyo, and I know what decent sushi should taste like. It turns out that they fly in some of their fish from Japan on a daily basis. So - you would expect to pay crazy prices, right? Not at all. I had this Delux Sashimi platter (picture below) for less than $700 - and just this plate made me and my wife full! I mean - the sushi was as thick as some steaks in this town!!

Wait - it gets better!

I like a beer with my Japanese food, and the best is Sapporo Premium. I had like 4 of them, and the staff did some "Gan Pai's" with me along the way. 

But - when the bill came - they didn't charge me for the beers! I felt bad!! 
That's how friendly and hospitable they are to their guests. 

Every dining experience is about the food and the experience, and if the price is good - even better, right? 

You get ALL OF THAT here and MORE! 

I am making this my top Japanese restaurant choice in HKG because of the entire package they offer. Everyone - you got to try this out! (By the way, I heard they have awesome Lunch Specials - so if you want to just give it a try without spending a lot of $, go during lunch!!)

题外话/补充资料: Order完食物留意到原來餐廳有一邊可以用屏風"間"開成為一個房,一張大概容納十多人既長枱,下次可以再黎試其他野食,可能做過飲食關係,都要睇員工服務好唔好,呢晚staff無嗺我們,幾有禮貌,無係隔離"泣泣樣樣"

我覺得一家日本餐廳的紫薑很重要,

雖然是細小的配料,但能看得出店家的用心。

紫薑比壽司還吸引,微酸而且是新鮮爽脆,

我吃得津津有味,把紫薑全清盤,

問一下店家,才知勝八的紫薑是自家醃製。

另外山葵不是一般的開粉wasabi,

帶小顆粒狀的山葵粒,味道不太刺鼻,

相信太也是新鮮山葵根製成。

【燒雞粒卷大蔥】比我想像中「濕身」,

能保留肉汁,但不夠香,乾身一點會更好,

大蔥也是不夠乾身,不夠爽脆。

還以為是「菠蘿味」雪糕,

原來有菠蘿顆粒,雪糕也不會太甜。

在寒冷的冬天來一口雪糕,

有一番特別的滋味。

勝八的整體食物質素都不錯,

能看出店家的在細節上也很用心,

服務態度也很好,

餐廳裝修風格仿近日本居酒屋,

店內設計清新簡約,坐得舒服。

因为很喜欢吃日本料理,所以去过很多家。通过朋友的介绍来到了这家新开的日本料理店去尝试,结果真的不错。因为是新开,所以还是会有些地方做的不好。但是这些都不重要,因为已经完全被食物的味道所吸引,因此也不会介意太多。真的,刺身很新鲜,牡丹虾,带子超鲜甜,拖罗入口即溶。清酒煮蚬超好吃,蚬肉很肥,很甜。还有很多东西都很好吃。最后的甜品----菠萝雪糕和芝麻雪糕,味道很好。
