I grew up in this area (my family were living on High Street) and Yuen Kee was not unfamiliar to me. It has been in the same location since the mid 70's, and was already very well known. So much for reminiscence. Nowadays old fashion become trendy again and I read many rave reviews from Openrice. Therefore, on a lazy afternoon my husband and I paid a visit to this place again.
As far as I can remember, the interior remains unchanged. We ordered the favourite: "Song Kee Sang" Tea with lotus seed and egg ($20) and Almond tea with lotus seed. Somehow I never have "Song Kee Sang"( anyone know the English name?) tea before, so I didn't know how to compare. It had a pleasant taste anyway. The almond tea was for sure splendid. Full of almond flavour, it was smooth and had the right amount of sweetness.
There were hardly any customer in the afternoon, and the place had a very laid back feeling in it. So was the service. Great to hang around and let time to drift away. Would be perfect if Uncle Ray's radio show is the background music though.
