I happen to be one of the 4 that dined with "Angry Customer", and I had made the "discovery" of the "mysterious sand-like texture" from the vegetables that was served together with their famous signature dish - Hainan Chicken Rice.
What happened (in detail):
1. Sand-like texture was found when chewing the stem of the veggies that came with the Hainan Chicken.
2. Sand-like texture was found AGAIN for the 2nd Hainan Chicken we ordered.
3. Reported the incident to a waiter, and asked for the Manager.
4. Manager came, and our "discovery" was revealed to him, and the dishes were taken back to the kitchen.
5. After approximately 5 mins (they weren't really quick about it, btw) Manager came back claiming that BOTH him and their chef tried the vegetables, and no sand-like texture could be found from the veggies. So we must be self-delusionalm, imagining the existence of the "sand".
6. Manager eventually gave-in, and asked what they can do to make us feel better. (Mind you, he never agreed that there were "sand" in the vegetables!) He suggested a plate of veggies on the restaurant.
7. We responded by saying we're full, and we didn't really want another dish of veggies. Can they offer something else?
8. Manager offered dessert as a replacement.
9. We had to clarify with the Manager whether it would be 1 order of dessert OR 2 orders or 4? (there were 4 of us, btw).
10. Manger said we could have 2 orders of dessert, on him, which is equivalent to approximately 1 dish of Hainan Chicken Rice. (Note that it's 1 dish, 1!)
11. EXTREMELY disappointed, we still ordered the dessert we righteously deserved - had it, paid and left.
The "discovery" & subsequent "discussion" with the Manager:
First of all, I showed him where the "sand" could be found. They're actually at the very tip of the vegetables (bak-choi like) where all the leaves converge into the stem (right before the roots). The "black dots" are quite evident and obvious, even under the dim lighting. What does he mean when he tells us that him AND his chef couldn't find any "sand" in the veggies. Are they suggesting that we're nuts? (Think of what his intentions are, when he said, not just him, but the chef also, could not find any "sand" in the veggies!)
This doesn't just end like that, it gets better and better! At one point of time, the Manager even suggested that I had incorrectly used the term "sand" for describing the "black dots". He told me that there wouldn't be any "sand", since these vegetables are grown on soil. I laughed it away, and told him that he should be smart enough to figure out what I mean by "sand". Imagine what he is implying! Is he trying to imply that I'm dumb?
The bottom-line?
BAD, UNACCEPTABLE, IRRESPECFUL service provided from a top-notch, high-end, 5-star hotel. Will consider writing a formal letter to their Management to report this Manager.
My take:
The food is alright, somewhat over-priced, decor is not bad, and service is terrible. If that's what you want, then go ahead, but I know for sure that I won't be going back to this restaurant.
