Summary: Not that this place needs any more positive reviews, but their lunch omakase is an incredible value and well worth a walk over to Sheung Wan. I have not tried their considerably more expensive dinner menu, but for $400, i'm not sure there's a better sushi lunch in town. Note how heavy they are on seared, fatty sushi, which could be a plus or minus for you. Reservations are a must for weekdays, but Saturday are usually fine for walk-ins.I've now tried this place 3 times for lunch, all ha

I've now tried this place 3 times for lunch, all having the same 14 piece omakase lunch. Two times were excellent and once was just okay, though I couldn't tell you exactly what made each better or worse.

Here's the menu (thanks FavouriteFoodLife):

Here's what comes with the $398 omakase sushi lunch:

Salad, chawanmushi, soup and yuzu sorbet. The chawanmushi is particularly good.

Tai, Akagai and Shima Aji

Of all the sushi, i was most surprised by the akagai. At cheaper omakases, this is usually omitted in favor of the fan favorites like ikura and uni, as it is quite expensive and not as beloved. Great ocean-ness and crunch. Shima-aji was quite crisp and not as fatty as usual, which i appreciated. Tai was a welcome sight, especially as it was sadly the only raw white-fish (shiromi) in the whole meal.

Scallop, Seared Kinmedai, Shrimp (Botan Ebi)

All very good and though I don't like seared sushi that much, the searing of the kinmedai brought out a lot of its umami, which is great because it's usually a bit forgettable as a sushi topping.

Seared Barracuda (kamasu), Aji, Crab

Barracuda was savory and meat-like as usual (okay, this has to be seared), and the aji was much-needed as a refreshing diversion among all the seared sushi. I'd never seen the crab in this style before, but it explodes with sweetness and the ocean with every bite; an exciting surprise.

Uni, Ikura, Seared Sablefish (Gindara)

The gindara is as fatty as cod, and as decadent as it looks. The uni and ikura were fresh, and delicious as usual.

Seared O-Toro, Engawa

I've had this seared toro at a few places now, and i'm not sure how i feel about it. It does help to balance out the toro's fattiness by giving it a hit of Maillard complexity. However, the standard sushi rice/ fatty o-toro combination is already perfect for me, so not sure why they tinker with perfection, though it's nice on occasion i suppose. My friend's favorite, the insane seared Engawa, is nicely grilled here, oozing with fat and beautifully enveloping the sushi rice.

Overall, this is a terrific sushi meal for a very decent price. If this was dinner (and it very well could be), i'd call it one of HK's greatest bargains; as it is, it's one of HK's great sushi lunches. While it's lacking in balance; way too many grilled or fatty sushi and not nearly enough white or shining-fish; it's what people like, so who am I to complain? It also covers all the omakase classics, so whoever you bring won't be complaining they didn't get their ikura or toro. At the price, you could have it 3-4 times for the same price as a dinner omakase somewhere else. Highly recommended.
