Sonata is a restaurant located in the four-star Rosedale Hotel Kowloon. The hotel is around 10 to 15 minutes' walk from Olympic MTR station, and is run by the same group as Rosedale on the Park in Causeway Bay.The restaurant serves international cuisine, and offers a Semi-buffet Lunch, a Sunday Brunch Buffet, an Afternoon Tea Buffet as well as a Deluxe Seafood Dinner Buffet in addition to their a là la carte menu. The Deluxe Seafood Dinner Buffet costs HK$268 per adult and HK$168 per child from Monday to Thursday, and costs HK$298 per adult and HK$188 per child from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays.
I started off my meal with some seafood. You could either get the oysters from the buffet table, or order some freshly shucked oysters if you don't mind waiting for a few minutes. I tried some Coffin Bay oysters and Tasmanian oysters, and they were fresh and supple.
There was also a sushi and sashimi counter. I didn't try any of the sushi, but I did try the sashimi, and I liked the salmon sashimi and the sweet shrimps the most.
There is a salad bar with a reasonable range of appetisers. I tried four of the appetisers, and they were quite delicious. The cold Japanese noodles were refreshing, and the savoury tart, lifted by a hint of black truffle oil, was also delightful.
There was a range of meats available at the buffet. The honey-glazed barbecued pork ribs were nicely crunchy on the surface; the braised oxtail in red wine sauce was well-cooked and full of flavour, and I also liked the Thai grilled pork neck, which had a firm and chewy texture.
I also tried some roast prime rib, which was quite tender but could have been more flavourful. What I liked the most, however, was the mashed potato, which had a scrumptious layer of grilled cheese on top!
There is a special counter at the buffet which changes every month, and I was told that it was a Spanish ham counter last month. This month, it is a pasta counter where you can order freshly made pasta.
We ordered a squid ink pasta to share. The pasta here has been slightly modified to suit Hong Kong taste buds, so tends to be soft and not al dente at all. It was not what I preferred, but I could see that the counter was very popular that night and a lot of diners enjoyed tailor-making their dish with their choice of pasta, sauce and ingredients.
Moving onto desserts, I tried a tiramisu, a lychee and raspberry mousse and a mango sago pudding. I liked the lychee and raspberry mousse the most, as it was fruity and summery.
What I liked the most out of the entire meal, though, were the cakes and pastry! I tried the strawberry and mango danish pastry, and they were gorgeously flaky. The blueberry cheesecake was marvellously smooth and creamy, the chocolate fondant cake had an excellent chocolate taste and the green tea and mango cake tasted very lovely! The cakes at this restaurant had just the right level of sweetness and were not too heavy at all, which worked very well at a buffet.
The selection at this buffet may not be as big as the ones at some other hotels, but the food, in general, were tasty. There was a good selection of seafood and meats available; however, it would have been even better if there were more choices for carbohydrates. Besides the pasta, there were only some bread rolls, sushi and fried rice, so perhaps the restaurant could consider serving some pizzas, fried noodles, rice rolls, Pad Thai, etc. Even though the location of the restaurant is not prime, the price of the buffet is very reasonable and it is worth coming here if you don't live too far away.
