Decided to try Taco C for lunch last Monday. The restaurant had a few patrons in it, but it certainly wasn’t full. The feel is definitely the sort of overpriced, trying very hard to be "hole in the wall", -type thing you get in Brooklyn or other places hipsters dominate.
You order tacos by the pair, but two tacos is a little on the small side. Two tacos + rice and beans is probably the way to go. Everything's cooked on a small range behind the counter (I imagine they have a deep fryer too). The place could use a coat of paint, and some industrial cleaning for the floor... but again, they're really going for the "dive" feel (without the dive prices).
I got the fish tacos, chicken tacos, and a beer.
Fish tacos: the fish is breaded and fried, and comes in very small portions (even compared to the small taco size). There’s an option to order ‘extra meat’ on the menu, and I might suggest that route if you tried the fish tacos. They come with plenty of seasoning: guacamole, sour cream, and that pinkish sauce that goes on fish tacos. There was some shredded cabbage, but I found it a little... dessicated? I don't know, it sort of had the texture of straw. The tortilla (I got the flour ones) was OK. It had more life in it by far than the ones I've gotten at Caramba and Tequila. Overall pretty good: A-/B+
Chicken tacos: it seemed like there was more chicken on the chicken tacos than fish on the fish ones. There's less other stuff, mostly just pico. The pico's alright, but a little too limey or lemony (couldn't tell). The chicken is reasonably good. B
Beer: I got an IPA from, I think, San Francisco, called 'ACME'. Never had that one before. Not as hoppy as I like my IPAs, and a little on the warm side. Still, amazing to find actual good American beer in HK. A++
Taco Chaca is a small step down from Brickhouse, but it's easier to get a table at TC and it's cheaper and has less of the douchey expat feel to it. TC is also a *huge* step up from the vast majority of crap passing itself off as Mexican in HK (I'm looking at Caramba, Tequila, and-- ugh-- Taco Loco). I'll probably eat at TC once a month from here on out, maybe more frequently.
A+
