So I've been to Sevva countless times for drinks and once for New year's eve dinner (don't remember that too well!), but never really for a proper dinner. It was a fine evening in the end, but I can't help feeling like a place like this, in this setting, should be more than just another "penthouse restaurant" with mediocre food. My friends and I started out on the terrace for some white wine as an aperitif. As has been commented by some others on this board, the outdoor waitstaff sometimes have to reconfirm orders multiple times and can be a bit brusque, but it wasn't that bad...apart from the plastic wine glasses, which don't add to the experience.
Then back inside and seated. A romantic atmosphere, relatively happening on the harbour facing side, mainly local crowd and quite well-dressed and good looking.
Salad starters were very promising--great presentation and dressings; but the mains were less consistent. Mine was perhaps the worst of the batch--the pasta with king prawns--sauce was much too sweet and lacking in flavour and the whole dish just lacked balance. This might have been an attempt to cater to local sweeter palates? My two girlfriends both had the lamb, which was tender and tasty, though I still prefer the lamb at the Mandarin Grill. Desserts: The pear chocolate tart was delightful.
Overall, we had a reasonable time but, given the prices and quality of Sevva, I can't help but think that somewhere like Cepage makes a better high-end restaurant cum rooftop--shame it's in Wanchai...
