We experienced a lovely, warm welcome when we entered the Fatty Crab and were shown to the bar. Nice bustling atmosphere with friendly bar and door staff - so far so good! Our friend was 45mins late but the manager was insistent on not seating us until he had arrived, even though the restaurant was only half full. We experienced a lovely, warm welcome when we entered the Fatty Crab and were shown to the bar. Nice bustling atmosphere with friendly bar and door staff - so far so good! Our friend was 45mins late but the manager was insistent on not seating us until he had arrived, even though the restaurant was only half full. That's their policy I guess, but still...

Our waiter, very friendly and easy on the eyes, suggested the number of plates we should select from the "raw", "skinny" and "fatty" sections of the menu and informed us that the sharing plates from the "fatty" menu were 'really big'.

"Raw": Oysters were nice and fresh and would recommend the French ones over the Australian.

"Skinny": The smoked pork ribs were heavenly - my gripe is that the waiter didn't tell us that only two ribs made up one serving, so each couple had to share one rib. Albeit to say, we were fighting over it! We would have ordered another serving but this took the longest to arrive (besides the crab). The fatty sliders were a decent size with a very tasty patty. Smoked eggplant salad was good.

The crispy pork with watermelon salad was the highlight of the entire meal - the pork belly and watermelon combination is something I've never had before but it works! Portion was smaller than expected for a sharing plate - could have passed it off for a skinny plate. The char kway teow was only okay sadly - the portion wasn't huge and lacked a real kick to it. I was really looking forward to this dish as it's one of my favourite singaporean/malay dishes but did not live up to expectations. The chilli crab also missed the mark - the portion was small for the $500+ price tag, the crab wasn't very meaty and the sauce (although tasty) had an unusual thick consistency.

Desserts: After feeling like the food barely touched the sides, we shared two desserts - an warm chocolate cake and a peanut butter sundae which were standard.

Overall, I did enjoy the meal, even after having a small heart attack seeing the $2400+ bill (not including service but included alcohol). I would definitely come back for those ribs and the crispy pork and would just skip the expensive oysters and the chilli crab.

齊人後,便經過暗道來到隔旁的相連舖位。有感星馬菜普遍都會有點辛辣,便點了這兒有名的Cocktail,以辣椒infused過的tequila、manzinilla sherry、西芹汁及青檸汁來調的Where’s Wallace ($115),有很清新的西芹香,解辣真的一流。

喝著談著,還在欣賞一下擺設及餐具,甚有一點點中國特色。此時,Fatty Plateau ($695)送到,很開心,有冰鎮生蠔、蟶子及登格斯蟹,另外還有辣汁大蝦。生蠔新鮮肥美,登格斯蟹鮮甜多汁,但可加入的並不是檸檬汁,而是炸紅蔥青辣椒汁、柚子青胡椒薄荷汁及紅辣椒蒜味汁等等,辣汁大蝦則以青檸泡菜汁醃過,味道辣辣地,各款海鮮都非常新鮮,醬汁又新奇,充滿東南亞風味。

Smoked Jalan Alor Chicken Wings ($95 for 3 pieces)賣相烏卒卒,但味道卻是很好,香脆可口點煙燻香,味道帶點甜辣,估不到的美味,但如果少點焦,會更好。後來才知這兒的肉類會先經煙燻,才伴去燒烤,所以各類肉類都會帶點燻香。

Fatty Duck ($200)是當晚最喜愛的菜式之一,表面香脆,肉質嫩滑,意想不到的美味,最欣賞的是調味,惹味之外,還有濃郁的鴨香,再伴以玉城町米煮出來的飯及以椰糖煮成的黑豉油,當飯粒沾上醬汁及鴨油後,相當美味,這道是非吃不可的。

招牌菜Chili Crab ($MP)是非常出色的, 選用上蟹味濃郁的登格斯蟹,先蒸熟,後配以加入蛋汁低溫慢煮出來的醬汁來炒,使鮮味更濃郁,辣味更香辣,味道更惹味,而且還不會水汪汪,帶點稠杰,伴以香脆的厚多士蘸汁來吃,鮮味無窮,人間滋味。

最後的甜品時間,有三款分別是Coconut Panna Cotta($70)、Warm Chocolate Cake($90) & Fatty Sandae($90)。三款中以新地最受歡迎,以花生醬、焦糖醬及朱古力曲奇製成,香甜又有花生醬的果仁香,十分美味。而奶凍亦十分有特色,當奶凍及鮮芒果一起吃,感到的味道竟然與芒果糯米飯相似,十分有趣。

是次是難得的試食,很久沒有吃到如此有驚喜的菜式,無論味道及煮法都予人新奇有趣,以東南亞的烹調去處理西方食材,真是難得的體會。

So, post-work...my grumbling stomach in tow finally had the opportunity to try Fatty Crab! At the edge of SOHO on Old Bailey Street is New York's fave Fatty Crab! It opened a few months ago serving diners delicious South East Asian food. I've heard mixed reviews of this place. Some people raved about the food, while bashing the service and vice versa... I put my hungry tummy to the test! A and I went around 7:30pm on a Thursday evening (remember theres a no reservations policy) and weren't surprised to see that all the 45- table seats were completely filled. Luckily they were able to seat us instantly at the intimate bar area! The vibe is dark, fun, hip, loud, lively with ghetto chic decor!
The food is separated into Fatty, Skinny, Raw & Sides! Alrighty....

Fatty: Crispy Pork and Watermelon Salad | pork belly, thai basil, ginger-lime dressing | $150. The pork belly was AWESOME! Perfectly crispy on the outside, but moist, tender and juicy on the inside- marinaded with a slightly spicy and hot thai basil and ginger-lime dressing. The watermelon bites helped add a refreshing splash and surprise to the pork belly!

Fatty: Fatty Duck | pickled mustard greens, gula jawa, thai chili, tamaki rice | $200. I've heard raves about this fatty duck that melts in your mouth...however, it didn't do it for me :/ SIGH. The duck was quite dry.... It wasn't bad by any means! But it didn't defy my too high expectations for it. The fragrant Japanese Tamaki Rice and sweet, dark house made sauce were really good though.

Fatty: Bacon & Clams| house smoked bacon, curry leaf, yuzu | $160 & Sides: Pullman Toast | $20 THIS I LOVEEEED...the clams were heavenly, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. And the soup broth was rich, strong and slightly spicy! A perfect dipping sauce for the thick sweet pullman toasts.

主角蟹又出場,這項我是非常推薦!用阿拉斯加海域一帶的薄身蟹,加以雞蛋、辣椒、薑、蒜、香草等十多種配料來製作,蛋漿完全融化在醬汁內,蟹鮮也跑到汁裡頭來,用多士來蘸醬汁吃,一啖多士一啖鮮拆蟹肉就是最佳的吃法。

這項我也是十分推介,是沒期望之下地非常好吃!美國鴨肉件用泰國辣椒、香茅、青芥辣等醃後炸熟,炸致外層酥脆,肉地仍很嫩滑,味道是鹹甜並重,仍略帶那令人歡樂的鴨騷香,很好下飯。那用印尼椰糖煮成的醬汁更起劃龍點晴之效,滋潤鴨肉之餘亦令它更香口,必吃啊。

澳洲豬腩肉先用豉酒醃製二天再炸透,皮脆肉鬆化,重點是它配著西瓜同吃,平衡了整體肥膩度,是「車欠石硬」的組合。

朱古力蛋糕加了辣椒及薑是它最大的特式,另一款榛子雪糕則是鹹甜的組合,混上花生醬、海鹽、焦糖及椰子忌廉,玩味十足。

Even though still in its first few months of operation, Fatty Crab in Hong Kong is already attracting a young, hip clientele who are eager to try some of its creative, East-meets-West dishes.

(1) As the restaurant has a no reservations policy, we had to sit in the bar area until everyone at the table arrived - not that I am complaining, as it was the best time for me to try some of Fatty Crab's exciting cocktails, designed by their mixologist Phillip Ward, who has worked at a number of established bars in New York. I ordered a glass of Drug Mule ($110), made with fuji apple infused vodka, house made ginger syrup and lime juice. The ginger gave it an appealing hotness, and the flavours of apple and lime complemented the kick of vodka.

(2) We started off with the Fatty Plateau ($695), an impressive platter of fresh oysters, razor clams marinated in pomelo, green peppercorns and mint, steamed dungeness crab in red chili sauce and marinated shrimps in a salted lime-kimchi dressing. The seafood was irresistibly fresh, and the Thai-style dressings accentuated its natural flavours.

(3) A large platter of Grilled Jalan Alor Chicken Wings ($95, 3 pieces per portion) arrived next. Somewhat taken aback by its dark appearance, we were later told that the colour came from the sauce, which was made from kecap manis, chili, cumin, fennel. I preferred my chicken wings less char-grilled, but the sweet sauce was tasty.

(4) The pork belly in the Crispy Pork and Watermelon Salad ($145) was a tad dry, but I loved the use of watermelon in this dish, which helped cut through the fattiness. The watermelon was imported from Malaysia, and was exquisitely crisp and juicy.

(7) The Fatty Duck ($200) was a dish that would make me come back to this restaurant. The deep-fried duck was enticingly crispy on the surface and full of meaty flavours, but what I liked most was the sweet, dark house made sauce, which was perfect with the Japanese tamaki rice.

(8) This Singapore-style Chili Crab (around $550 for a standard portion) was the highlight of the night. A giant crab sat in the middle of a large porcelain bowl, but it was the chili sauce which made my heart sing - the spicy, curry-like sauce, eaten with a piece of thick, airy toast, was sublime.

Dinner at Fatty Crab costs around $400-$500 per head, and the service was energetic and friendly. The South East Asian offerings are bold and tasty, and the combination of Western cooking techniques with Asian ingredients gives the cuisine just that extra flair. Given that it is a small restaurant which is immensely popular, seating could be a bit cramped, but this new kid on the block is definitely worth a visit.

Had a 'prison sex' because of course you're gonna order a drink with that name, and my other friend had a 'fidelity' while the rest had beers. The prison sex was light, quite sweet, but i didnt read the ingredients list to the end! I dislike cava/champagne/sparkly wine stuff, so that didn't go down too well with me. I also had some of my friends Fidelity which i didn't like, tooooooo sweeeeeeet. We also tried the manhattan - WAY too strong, i dont know if it's supposed to be like that or if it was a one off, but that was hard for us to drink. We played a game to see who would finish that one off. The drug mule was DELISH, did it have ginger in it? I like anything with ginger in it (drinks wise anyway). Soul fizz (i think thats what its called) was delicious, just the right amount of sweetness, and didn't taste like alcohol, which is always a plus. Had some drinks with celery which were amazing, the taste was great. Also had the diablo, that was good too, but nothing special. We also had some pickle backs, two rounds. I was nervous to try at first cause a shot of bourbon followed by some sour stuff sounded like a bad idea, but it was ACTUALLY very good. Tasted very 'thai' and kinda like food.... weird but I would do it again.

We had lots of food, I might forget a few things
seafood platter - really good, the oysters were top notch, the razor clam a bit too salty
ceviche - really liked it, especially the crunchy salty bits, went well with the fish
papaya salad - good, not too spicy which was good as thai papaya salads make me cry a little
sliders - yummy, i liked the pickled cucumber, bit spicy but thankfully it didn't kick in until i had eaten the whole thing
oyster sliders - good
fish - TOO MANY BONES, very difficult to eat, but it was tasty
pork and watermelon x2- very good, still tryign to decide if i liked the sour watermelon, but the pork was tender and not too dry
ribs - bit dry, and very sweet. I got a smaller rib though so maybe thats why
duck - didn't like this dish, i found it too dry, and didnt manage to get any rice as everyone eats uber fast, but my friend enjoyed this

skipped dessert as we were extreeeeemely full. overalll it was good, and maybe it was because we ate loads that i found it pretty heavy. Nice every once in a while, i will definitely go back and maybe try a few of the other dishes.

Inspired by Malaysian, Thai, Indonesian and Vietnamese cuisine, be prepare to have your palette spiced by the Fatty Crab's dishes. Flavourful, robust, sweet and spicy are what you will find in here. Even cocktails that I had tonight infused with ingredients such as ginger syrup, lime juice, thai basil etc. Fatty Crab is indeed an exotic dinning experience.

Cocktail - Drug Mule & Fidelity
I can't help but to check out Fatty Crab's Cocktail list in details because of their interesting names and ingredients. Created by the Crew's own mixologist, Phillip Ward, I am impressed with the list. Drug Mule is a refreshing cocktail with fuji apple infused vodka, house made fresh ginger syrup and lime juice. I love the ginger taste in this cocktail which made the drink more delicate and brought more depth to the drink. The Fidelity is another yummy cocktail with cuban rum, fresh lime juice, Yellow Chartreuse and thai basil.

Smoked Jalan Alor Chicken Wings
The chicken wings were a bit too sweet for my liking, perhaps an over used of kebab manis (ABC Sauce)? Judging from the appearancem, I was also expecting crispier skin . I see a dish to improve.

Fatty Sliders
The fatty slider was one of my favourite of the night. The beef patty was nicely spiced with the sambas aioli - try imagine the taste of the green chilli paste to go with the taco crisps when you dine in Indonesian restaurant. The pickled cucumber was crispy and went really well with the burger. The slider was great but I would love to have the beef patty slightly juicer.

Chili Crab
Not until we picked up the Dungeness crab with the leg, we found it surprisingly huge. As chatted with William, the manager, perhaps they could use a flatter and shallower plate to present the crab flat.

The Dungeness crab was very meaty and sweet, but with only a little mustard in it. The crab chilli sauce was really yummy, it's was so good with the Pullman toast! Basically I can have the chilli sauce with anything, bread, rice, pasta or simply spoon it! Having said that, I still think the sweetness should bring down a bit, and that will make the dish perfect! Also may be a bit spicier? Since now it is more like a sweet crab than chilli crab.

Fatty Duck
The fatty duck was not a bad dish. The duck was very flavourful with the spices, but was very hard to chewy. Also there was bones attached with the duck pieces, making it extremely hard to eat it with utensils. Use your hand with this duck dish!

Nasi Lemak
The chicken curry did not taste too exciting for me. The chicken was tender but the curry sauce was too weak for me. The slow poached egg was nicely done but the coconut rice that comes with the dish was much mushier than the bowl we ordered separately.

Watermelon Pickle and Crispy Pork
This dish is heavenly Delish! The pork belly was extremely crispy on the skin, with palate dissolving fat in between the layers of tender meat! The watermelon and other pickles were very refreshing as well. I love this dish!!!! This pork belly made into my top 3 pork belly list, and is a MUST TRY here.

Steamed Clams
This is another excellent dish here at Fatty Crab. The clams were fresh and sweet, the green chili sauce was mildly spicy with lots of flavours in it. There was also crab meats in the sauce. Yum!

Coconut Rice
We ordered a separate bowl of coconut rice and found the rice more dry and less mushy than the ones complimented in the mains. It was a great pair with the green chilli sauce from the steamed clams!

Dessert - Egg Custard
Dessert time comes this lovely semi-sweet egg custard on the left and salty custard on the right. The coconut cream as well as the coconut flakes were nice but i found the fried shallot tasted a bit funny with the dish.

Coconut Durian Panna Cotta
Our beautiful waitress got this Durian Panna Cotta for us for free to let us try it. No one actually likes durian on the table but I found this panna cotta irresistible!!! The durian taste was very strong but it also tasted very milky and smooth! I think the milky taste paired extremely well with the Durians and seriously good job doing this Panna Cotta. The only bad thing on this dish was the mango which tasted very sour.

Grandly opened only two weeks, Fatty Crabs is still on the way to improve their food as well as the consistency of service. Our main waitress was really nice and helpful, knowing everything on the menu and always carries a big smile with her. One other female waitress was quite lost most of the time and another dreadful male waitress which was rather rude to us. Overall the dining experience was really nice in Fatty Crab, we had loads of fun. Just one final word to anyone who wants to dine in Fatty Crab - they don't take reservation and all parties has to be present to get seated. So go early and don't be late!
