東京天井食堂 (English name: The Well Japanese Restaurant) is a hidden restaurnat located inside two residential buildings. We came across it when we saw a menu sign for a cha chaan teng. We were curious and went down this corridor, thinking to find cha chaan teng. Up above was the four building complexes that created a little courtyard where there was not just the cha chaan teng but another restaurant to the left.
There was a good number of people dining. Browsing the menu, we decided to give it a try. A hidden place and still have diners is something that always intrigues me.
Menu is in Chinese and Japanese. There is no English and no 10% service charge. What they serve is individual Japanese rice and udon dishes for lunch but yakitori at night. As we were here for lunch, they only had the lunch set menu available.
We ordered a couple of drinks with our lunch. Boyfriend had the nostalgic Ramune Soda in lemon flavour ($9) and I had a Lychee Tea ($6) which was actually not too sweet but lots of lychee taste.
Boyfriend ordered the Eel with Sunny Side Up Egg on Rice ($78). It came with a bowl of miso soup.
The egg was the rich Japanese kind so the yolk was very dark orange in color. The eel was generously slathered in a sweet sticky sauce and lots of spring onions were provided. The Japanese rice was sticky and mixed well with the sauce. The eel itself was grilled nicely.
The miso soup was richly umami. Just a sprinkle of spring onions was added.
I had the Deep Fried Cheese Stuffed Pork Chop with Udon ($74). The pork chop appeared bigger than I expected! Good thing boyfriend helped me out!
The pork chop was stuffed to the brim with gooey cheese. The pork chop was nicely fried. Crisp coating and the meat was juicy and not dry.
The udon portion wasn't very big but as the pork chop was a large size, this came out to be a more balanced portion. Topped with King mushroom, baby cornm spring onions and zucchini all in a clear dashi broth. The udon was smooth and chewy.
We added a snack of Sesame Chicken Wings ($18). A bit spicy but super crispy. The meat was extremely juicy. The oil just splattered out when I bit into my wing.
A wonderful find in the an area we walk by so many times. It's a good thing we took a pause and ventured in. Food was delicious and nicely presented. Staff were more like friends coming over for a bite to eat. Will be back.
