Don't mistake this as a proper tapas place
Iberico & Co.
2015-04-12
The decor is chic and modern, dimly lit so it's a place for dinner. The entrance has a bar area for people to have cocktails while they wait or those who just want to have cocktails. We came here for an early dinner with our baby. The staff was very nice and reserved our table with a baby chair set up already. Theres an extensive menu of small plates and big plates. The small plates are not small, contrary to what our waitress told us. We ordered way too much food and had to take it home. We ordered octopus in olive oil and chili, tuna ceviche, crispy pork belly, grilled asparagus and spicy ribs. The octopus was ok. There was not a lot of taste to it, but just drenched in oil and a few bits of herbs. The tuna ceviche had a smokey smell to it, which when we asked the waitress  she said that was the style. Unlike the lemony ceviche we were used it, this one did not do so well with our taste buds. The crispy pork belly was the best. The cut of the meat had a perfect layer of lean meat, fat and a thick crispy pork skin. There was a sweetish sauce that went on top of the meat but I took it off and ate the meat as is which to me was perfect. It was salty enough and the textures of the meat was very flavorful. The spicy ribs was ok. It was as how ribs should taste but it didn't strike me as anything special. The portion was huge. One can order that as their main course.Overall we felt the meal was average with the pork being the best. The others unfortunately was nothing special. …查看更多

Big portioned quasi Mexican food
XOCO Mexican Cantina & Bar
2015-04-07
The decor at Xoco is quaint with lots of light. The staff (manager) was very nice and attentive. The menu is extensive. We were only there for a snack so we ordered the chicken hard tacos. Not many Mexican places serve hard tacos so I was very excited to see it on their menu. As mentioned by the manager, the portions are huge. The tacos looked like it was stuffed with chicken, beans, lettuce, sour cream and guacamole and then baked to melt the cheese on top. The tacos looked more delicious than it tasted. The hard taco shell tasted slightly stale so unfortunately that entire dish was ruined for me. The chicken didn't have much taste. The dish also came with Mexican rice and black beans. The rice was very dry and luke warm. We may come back because this place is very close to our flat, but I will not order the tacos again. Maybe their burritos or enchiladas would be better.…查看更多

Not authentic Vietnamese noodles
火車頭越南餐室 (浣紗街)
2015-04-07
We were in the tai hang area and went to locomotive for Vietnamese noodles. I ordered the locomotive special beef noodle. It didn't taste anything special or authentic. There was a lot of beef, beef balls, some stomach lining, and cartilage in the soup. It seemed like they wanted to put everything in the soup To make it seem like a good deal. The soup base doesnt taste authentic at all- it was like normal beef soup base, not the pho soup where it's cooked for hours on end with pork bone. The noodles came with raw sprouts and fresh chillis. My husband ordered the same but vegetarian version. He was expecting the soup to come with lots of vegetables but unfortunately the soup came with a lot of mock meat. There were fish balls but made with vegetables and tofu and lots of tofu skin. There was even mock shrimp but made with tofu paste. There were a couple of green vegetables as well. We should have clarified with the staff what exactly the vegetarian version entailed. The decor of the restaurant seemed modern-ish with some relics of Vietnam dotted around the walls. They had a very modern chandelier hanging from the ceiling which looked a bit weird. Right after we paid the bill, I saw a cockroach in the booth next to us. Let's just say we left as quickly as possible.…查看更多

Not french nor anywhere close
Brasserie Le Fauchon
2015-04-07
From the outside the ambiance looked nice but there were no more seats downstairs so we were lead upstairs. This is a HK style french restaurant, geared for people who do not know what french food is. We should have left before we ordered. There was a set menu available for HK 260 for a 4 course meal. There was soup, appetizer, main and dessert. I ordered the french onion soup and it was such a disappointment even before I tasted it. There  was no melted cheese on top of the soup bowl. The soup had a piece of toasted soggy french bread and the soup itself tasted like packet soup you get in the supermarket. Next course I ordered escargot in garlic. The snails were nothing special, the seasoning was salty with lots of garlic which probably masked the low quality snails. For main course I had the steak. Just when you think you can't go wrong with a piece of meat, the restaurant was able to mangle the dish. The thin piece of meat was smothered with a thick sauce, similar to a sauce you would get if you went to a Chinese style western restaurant. The meat in itself was very soft which made me think they probably seasoned it with baking soda to soften the meat. For dessert I ordered the ginger soufflé which argueably could be the best on the menu. The soufflé was cooked to order, with a strong taste of ginger. However, there was a strong eggy taste to the soufflé. By the time dessert came I was ready to leave. While the entire course was considered cheap for soho prices, I left the restaurant unsatisfied and wished I had spent my money elsewhere, even if it would cost me double or triple the price I had just spent. This restaurant is not for those who want to experience french cuisine or good food for that matter. I wish people coming to this restaurant would know to expect you'll get HK style western food and nothing authentic. The wait staff were attentive and very nice.…查看更多

Best homemade pork and veg dumplings
三多麵食
2015-04-06
If you want fresh, big sized and home-made dumplings this is the place to go. The restaurant is small, and crowded, not recommended to come if you want a nice long lunch, however, if you are eating alone and don't mind sharing tables with people practically sitting on your lap, this is a cheap and easy place to go.The staff is efficient and fast. You should know exactly what you want because they will not have the patience to recommend or go through the menu with you. If you dine in, expect your food to come quickly (a huge plus!) but also expect to be rushed out as soon as you finish. The wait staff will openly tell you to leave and pay the bill. You can also see there's a long queue outside that's always at least 10 -15 people deep. The restaurants specialty is noodle soup with your choice of 1-3 toppings. I always get the pork and veg dumpling with fresh fish meat balls. The portions are HUGE. Theres a choice of rice vermicelli, rice noodles and thick or thin egg noodles. The dumplings are all freshly made. When you bite into the dumpling you can feel some of the meat juices oozing out. The dumpling skin is soft and silky. The fresh fish meat balls is also their specialty. When you bite into the ball you can feel there is fresh fish meat, whereas some places mix a lot of flour into the mixture. if you're feeling more adventurous you can dry the intestines or kidney with the noodles. Ive seen a lot of people order that as well.Sam Tor is a cheap and cheerful place for lunch. A bowl of noodles cost around hk45. …查看更多

Horrible quality
餃子園
2013-07-11
I was craving dumpling noodle soup and passed by this shop. There were a lot of people inside so I figured it should vibe relatively good. The owner was very friendly and gave me a menu to look at. I ordered the vegetarian dumpling noodle soup. the wait was around 15 minutes which for a quick take out is a long time. when I got the food I went back to the office the dumpwash skin was soggy and when I bit into the flesh it was chewy but other parts of the dumpling was soggy. The noodles were worse. Completely mushy and inedible. There was no taste. It doesn't look like they use fresh ingredients. I understand take away may not be the same experience but this was plain awful.…查看更多

Quiet hidden itialian place in Soho
Mostaccioli Brothers
2013-03-24
I've walked by Mostaccioli Brothers many times and after reading some of the reviews have decided to give it a try. we made a booking and even though we did not specify we wanted outdoor seating, the hostess was kind enough to give us a table. The restaurant has a much larger terrace than you can see when you initially walk down from the stairs. The terrace opens up on the back and you can see it has a great outdoor, back yard garden vibe.We were then served with freshly made warm bread with tomato sauce. Despite it being a full house, the waitress was quick to attend to our table with waters and menus. They were attentive throughout the evening. The menu had a wide range of variety, most of which are American Italian comfort food - hearty pastas, cold cut meat and cheese platters and good selection of meat option. I ordered a Pasta Bresaola where the pasta was made al dente with a delicious fresh tomato based sauce. The portions were just right. They had an antipasta deal where you can order 2 for HKD 70. We ordered lemon squid and green olives. All very fresh and a great start to the meal with our wine. The prices were very reasonable. The steak was HKD270, and the pastas ranged from HKD 100 - 150. These prices are definitely reasonable for an al fresco restaurant in Soho.We will definitely be back!…查看更多

Great Healthy Food, Poor Service
Eat Right
2013-02-26
Fantastic place to eat if you want something healthy yet still feel you're eating out. The lambchops taste like where you would find at any other nice restaurant. It's juicy and cooked with just the right spices. The hamburger tastes great with the whole wheat bun. Their fries are basically potato wedges but the tastiness of the burger makes up for it. The menu is extensive enough for meatlovers and vegetarians. The food is fantastic and I am a frequent patron except the service could be better. The staff has probably never heard of "service with a smile". I was here for one afternoon and they served our food without cutery and we also had asked for extra condiments and it took a long time for it to come and when it did non apologetic at all. If they could increase their service level I'm sure they would have much more guests.…查看更多

There are so many better Italian places in Soho
Gianni's Trattoria Italiana
2013-02-26
There are so many other good italian options in Soho if one wanted to go and have a hearty meal. My husband and I came to this restaurant and decided to give it a try. The decor was very similar to the old restaurant - Phukets. The waiters were very friendly and were eager to have us seated. While the waiters seemed very eager to serve their guests, they unfortunately knew nothing about the menu nor could they offer any good recommendations. The chef came to our table ( we delicately requested to speak to the chef as the waiter didn't know anything that was on the menu) and to our surprise it didn't seem like he knew what he was talking about either! We later observed the "chef" was speaking to everyone at the tables so we started to wonder - who is cooking our food?We order a veal parmesan. It was dry and very salty. The only thing good about it was it was a huge portion. I ordered a spicy tomato pasta which was "highly recommended" by the chef. While bucatini could arguably be considered a "simple dish" (being tomato based with spices), it truly was a simple dish. The pasta did not seem fresh and the sauce was run of the mill. We were also recommended by the chef a starter of a small risotto dish with clams. The dish was good - as a complimentary dish! - however we were charged for this. It seemed too small to even ask for their guests to pay for it as we would never pay full price for this. There was a few clams and probably 3 spoonfuls of risoto. All in all, this would be the last time we would come here. If we want good hearty italian food, there are plenty to choose from in the Soho area.…查看更多

Something New on Peel Street
Libertine
2012-10-27
Libertine is a nice Jazz Bistro on Peel Street. There are 4 tables in the front where you can feel like you're sitting outside on a terrace. They seem to have a good variety of breakfast and main courses. They had a deal for free flow for two hours - HKD 180 / person. The catch is you have to have a main course. The free flow includes sparkling wine, red/white wine, coffee, and orange juice. We ended up mixing our own bellinnis which was quite nice. Libertine operates like a new restaurant - the staff are friendly but seem they still need to practice a few more rounds before operating without being rusty. We ordered the breakfast and they ran out of tomatoes. Seems a bit ridiculous for a restaurant to run out of something like tomatoes when they offered brunch. During the free flow we had to flag down the waitstaff every time we needed a top up and even so they were quite slow in coming to our table. Very different to other free flow places where even when you're not finished with the glass they come and top up.Despite the few glitches of being a new place, Libertine is a nice place to hang out on a sunday afternoon.…查看更多

Great Japanese at a Reasonable Price
尚善
2012-07-07
We happen to be in Sheung Wan after work meeting some friends for HH hour drinks. Instead of going back to our usual places in Soho, we decided to find something in Sheung wan. We saw Shou Zen and decided to try it out for dinner. The menu offered the usual, sashimi and sushi with a few cooked skewers. We ordered salmon, tuna and scallop sashimi, yellow tail sushi, california roll, salmon skin roll and chicken and leek skewers. The sashimi was fresh and cut to large pieces. The rolls were of substantial portions. The salmon skin roll was pleasantly good with crispy salmon rolled delicately into the sushi roll and topped with fish eggs. We ordered a small portion of sake to go along with the food. The atmosphere was of traditional Japanese decor. Surprisingly on a Friday night the restaurant was not very busy which was to our surprise given the quality of the food. We walked out definitely satisfied and the bill came out to HKD 750 which was reasonable for Japanese near central.I will definitely go there again if I have a craving for Japanese!…查看更多

Fantastic Dinner Buffet
Tandoor Indian Restaurant
2012-07-03
We were in the mood for some Indian food and wanted to go to a buffet so we can try different things. Much to our pleasant surprise, the buffet at Tandoor was great with a huge variety of food. There were different types of grilled meat - chicken and lamb with at least 3-4 different types of curries. There was (my favorite) chicken bryiani plus dhal, sag paneer (spinach and cheese), grilled potatoes and potato tika. There was so much good food one would definitely be leaving satsified. There was also an entire table of dessert - fresh fruit, and traditional indian sweetsWhen we arrived we were served with some appetizers - dosas with mashed potatoes. The dosas were made fresh and the crepe was fried without it feeling too greasy. We were also given the choice of plain or butter naan bread. Again it was brought to our table after it was made fresh. The environment was very comfortable and clean. There was indian live music which was a great addition to an authentic meal. The waitresses were attentive and welcoming. The buffet was around HKD250 + 10%. One can also order a la carte which is something I will consider next time. The table next to us ordered Chicken Tikka and it was sizzling on the grill as the waitress brought it out to their table.…查看更多

Great Lebanese with small outdoor courtyard
Sumac
2012-06-30
We went to Sumac for the first time tonight for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. We always saw this on Arbutnot road and Glenealy when we ride in a taxi so decided to try this. The restaurant is not huge - probably 10 - 12 tables inside and then in the little courtyard 3 tables. The atmosphere is simply decorated with dim lighting. This is great place for a date or romantic evening. We sat in the courtyard and it didn't feel like we were in HK. There was a large selection of appetizers and mains offering the traditional lebanese dishes - humous, halumi cheese, babah ghanoush, chicken, beef, lamb, etc. We ordered a glass of wine each and the meat platter for 2 to share with lebanese rice and green beans. The meat was fantastic. It was heavily seasoned and the meats were fresh with each distinct tastes. The chicken had a chargrilled taste which was tender and cooked just right. The beef was probably one of the best beef skewers I have had in a long time. The meat was tender and seasoned just right where you still can taste the beef. Lastly the lamb chops were delicious. Cooked just right. For a plate that offered 3 kinds of meat I was pleasantly surprised all 3 of them tasted so great. Normally one kind of meat would out shine the others but this time all three held to their own. The Lebanese rice was very tasty. It was slightly salted with some vermicelli and toasted peanuts. It went really well with the meat dish. The green beans were a bit different to our liking. It had a slight sour seasoning to it which I wasn't too keen on. The green beans were also cooked a bit too well. Again, not sure if this was how it is supposed to be cooked Lebanese style however from a personal viewpoint it wasn't as good as the other dishes.By the time we were finished we were too full for dessert. The portions were of great value. They did offer Baklava, ice cream crepes, apple crumble and dessert wines and liquors. I will definitely go to Sumac again and will recommend this to friends as well. Great find!…查看更多

Nice Tapas in Soho
Latitude 22º
2012-06-30
When one thinks of tapas in Soho Lattitude does not come to mind, however they do have a few dishes that is worth a visit. When you walk in Latitude looks more like a bar/pub than a restaurant, however they do serve great spicy meatballs in tomato sauce and chorizos and mushroom. Everything is cooked to order and you can tell it's being prepared with fresh ingrediants and taken with great pride from their chef. Their flatbread is made fresh daily that goes great with the tapas. The flat bread is seasoned with herbs, garlic and salt. It tastes great when it's hot from the oven. Lattitude has a huge selection of Spanish wines to choose from. The atmosphere is cosy with 5-6 tables and high chairs and booths along the wall. They seem to have a lot of regulars and a few drop ins. If you're looking for some place different than the usual Tapas places in Soho, you should try Latitude. The place is normally not packed and you'll be greeted by their friendly staff members. …查看更多

Great Value for Lunch in Central
La Piola
2012-06-27
Everytime I walk pass La Piola after work the place is packed with people having drinks by the open bar facing the streets. On a Friday night one people would be spilling onto the side walk with their wines and spirits. I've never eaten at La Piola and decided to give it a try during lunch. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who took us to our table upstairs. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful and we were again greeted by a very friendly waiter who asked us if we wanted water. There is a 3 course lunch set. I ordered the carrot soup and my friend ordered the eggplant "flan" with cheese. Both were delicious. My carrot soup was creamy and hot. Once could tell it was freshly made with high quality ingredients. The eggplant "flan" looked exactly like a dessert with the same texture as flan however, it had a rich eggplant creamy taste. It was actually very interesting and surprisingly delicious. For the main dish we took the recommendation from our waiter and ordered their homemade pasta with beef ragut. It was also very good. The pasta resembled angel hair - thinly cut pasta - that was cooked al dente. The portions were just right. Later we had a choice between coffee/ tea or their homemade dessert which was bread pudding. I was quite full after finishing the pasta so I opted for Earl Grey tea. The bill was HKD 188 + 10% which is very decent for a lunch set in Central. Include a glass of wine with lunch then it'll be HKD 300/head…查看更多
