We were thrilled when we discovered Amical Coffee was opened on an early afternoon. Physically it was a tiny cafe at one cute corner along Sun Street (gotta go upstairs tho), surrounded by little cozy cafes, french/italian delis and a few upmarket shops. It was quite a busy Sunday for us and it did take us some efforts to climb up here from the Southorn Playground. We were expecting some air-conditioning when we stepped into the café; unfortunately, that was not available... The optional out
The service was attentive and friendly. And for some reasons, the two baristas remind me of Café Corridor and Café Assembly… We ordered the Homemade Cheesecake ($40) out of the only two options they offered - either Cinnamon Toasts or Homemade Cheesecake. Our jaws dropped upon its arrival. The portion size was outrageously TINY. It had a feather-light texture with a rich taste of cream cheese and was served with two thin lemon slides to give additional flavors. It was delicious, not the best, but definitely NOT what we expected for a whopping $40.
Probably Amical thinks they have reached a point where good food compliments are thought to be unnecessary and therefore you have to pay a pricy penalty for ordering something non-coffee. The iced coffee ($35) I ordered was surprisingly ordinary. Normally I would opt for a hot cappuccino but then it was the least beverage I wanted amidst the intense heat, so I don’t know if my judgment on their quality of coffee could be trusted... Anyway, the slightly sweet ice coffee was brew properly with a delightful jolt of caffeine. It was quite strong in flavor but was then smoothed around the edges by the right amount of milk and syrup. However, it was to my understanding that ice coffee was very easy to make so I would rather opt for the Starbucks ($22) version given the similarity in taste. We were completely underwhelmed by the price level of this visit.
Perhaps, we just didn’t make the wise decision to order something hot to enjoy the beautifully crafted latte art. However, there are plenty more (convenient) alternatives in Wan Chai (e.g. Passion by Gerard Dubois, Spoil Café, Sift Patisserie (for take away), Oolaa…etc) for a comfortable and relaxing afternoon time… Why waste the effort to come here? And if I need quality coffee next time, it would be much more convenient to go for popular spots like Fuel, Café Corridor, Rabbit hole, Coco Espresso, Unar…etc. We won't return to Amical Coffee in the near future!
