The Charcoal Room is a new Korean BBQ restaurant that opened up recently. Boyfriend and I noticed it one evening while in Causeway Bay. Located across from Sogo, in a shopping center that had many clothing stores but lately, a few restaurants have taken over the space. The Charcoal Room Is one of them. Grabbing a flyer from one of the people on street level, we decided to give it a try. What we discovered was this was not your usual Korean BBQ.The layout is a bit more deluxe and modern with a
The layout is a bit more deluxe and modern with a dark wood design. The chimneys to suck up the fumes were hidden behind lights that looked like lanterns.
Menu is in English and Chinese. They have a la carte. But they also have the following set menu. Priced per head with a minimum of two people, they have a standard set ($356) and supreme set ($420).
While we were deciding on what to order, someone rolled over a tray of beef. On one tray was a selection of Japanese wagyu.
The other tray was a selection of Korean Hanwoo. Both were high quality. The staff member informed us that we can select the type of beef when ordering from the set. Then they rolled the tray away to the next table. I saw they did this with each table. It was all a bit odd really. A bit like those Chinese restaurants that bring you a bag of live fish or seafood and then take it away to the kitchen for slaughter.
As we decided on the Supreme set and chose which country we wanted our beef from, we started to chow down on the appetizers. They provided us with a salad that was pretty nice. There was a good drizzle of yuzu dressing. Loved the fresh cherry tomatoes.
The kimchi was interestingly presented, A waiter came and took it out of the black pot in one long strand and snipped it into smaller pieces. Did they make their own kimchi in that container? I have no idea but it was fun to watch anyways. Kimchi was fine. There were also pickles in its pickling juice, bean sprouts and marinated eggplant that looked spicy but it wasn't at all. Lettuce was provided for wrapping the grilled meat. Cold brown rice tea is also provided as well instead of usual water.
On top of the grill was two mini dishes. One was cheese with corn. The other was a sauce worth noting. It was a gochujang with a slice of garlic, chili and shrimp paste. It was fantastic. It was salty and spicy. Was fantastic with the meat. The grill was different than the other Korean BBQ places we've been to. This one used charcoal grill.
This is the first course in the Supreme Set: Canadian ox tongue in both thick and thin cuts and Korean black pork. Once the waiter walked away, we did what we always do at Korean BBQ. Start throwing stuff onto the grill! Let the sizzling begin! But not here! A wait staff came over and immediately started to grill for us! We jokingly asked is it due to the fact it looked like we'd burn the place down? But she laughed no, it's the regular service here. They grill it for you so yes ... not more burnt or overcooked food!
The ox tongue was moist and tender. But the best was the black pork. It literally tasted like char siu.
Second course was Korean chuck flap with soy sauce marinade, Japanese wagyu chuck rib, Japanese wagyu brisket and today special cut which was a Korean rib eye. There was a nice even marbling of fat to meat. The chuck flap was marinaded in this fantastic marinade. A sweet and savory combination. The best was the brisket. Very moist and tender with a strong beef taste. Though boyfriend liked the chuck rib more as he felt it wast more tender.
The third course we were told to choose Korean or Japanese beef. We chose Japanese. This was a sirloin and chuck roll. The chuck roll was wonderfully fat and juicy. The sirloin didn't have a strong beef flavor. We wonder if we should have chosen the Korean cuts?
The fourth course was Korean eel and Korean octopus. The eel was a bit fishy but after basting it in the eel sauce, it tasted much better. Boyfriend even reheated it again after rolling it in the eel sauce and it was even better. The octopus on the other hand was great! Nice and firm. Very fresh and a bit salty. This was one of the best octopus I've had in a long time.
Fifth course was Hanwoo rice. There was a raw egg yolk on top of the spring onion and beef toppings so mixing this up, it bound everything together. Everything was nicely flavored.
The other item was soybean paste stew. There was a few clams in it along with other items such as daikon and carrots and beef cubes. A savory stew that was a little bit spicy as well.
The meal ended with a tray of dessert. This was beautifully presented in a wooden box that opened up to show two shelves of Korean desserts. It was lovely and we found various kinds of rice cakes and mochi. Most of them filled with red bean paste or soybean paste. There was also slices of dried persimmon, almonds and a nut bar. It was pretty to look and a nice ending to the meal.
We went in expecting the usual Korean BBQ. But what we got was something else all together. The service was more geared for a higher end experience. The quality of the food was exceptional. A bit pricier than most places but worth a try.
