Hainan chicken rice is my guilty pleasure so I'm always on the lookout for new places or recommendations. One of them that has been the word on the street for being really good is Yung Kee Hainan Chicken Rice. From Hung Hom, we walked by one time but the queue was so long, we gave up. But now they have opened a branch in Sheung Wan. The line here is not as long except during peak lunch hour. But they still have chicken available even into the night.Menu is in Chinese only. Menu is in Chinese only. There is no English and no 10% service charge. You pay on your way out. They serve various kinds of chicken along with appetizers and laksa. However, if you want to get a laksa, they don't serve it in the evening. However, despite all the choices, the only thing everyone orders is the Hainan chicken rice.
I came for one thing only so I ordered the Hainan chicken rice ($66). It was served with a Thai style dipping sauce that was sour and spicy. They had run out of the coconut chicken soup so regular hot drinks were substituted. The chicken was not really seasoned so you do need the dipping sauce. The meat was firm and I felt the skin was a bit too fat. The rice was good though a bit on the salty side. There was some deep fried garlic on top as well.
Boyfriend ordered the chicken with spring onion sauce ($63). The chicken here was exactly the same but they added a spring onion and oil sauce on top. Regular rice was also provided.
While we were eating, the staff came out with deep fried chicken wings and told us it was free. Looking around, we noticed everyone had one. It wasn't mentioned any where so I'm unsure if this is a regular occurance. The wings were very crispy and the meat was juicy. But I felt it was way too salty and couldn't finish it. Boyfriend felt it was perfectly seasoned so happily ate my share, declaring these to be fantastic.
I think it was just ok. I've had better places for Hainan chicken rice. I guess it's fine if there is no need to queue. If there is a queue, I'd definitely won't bother. But boyfriend loved it so ... I guess we may be back.
