The street leading into the Wanchai wet markets always has hidden little eateries. Most of them are always a treat to find. We chanced upon one called 綠森林 (Chinese name: Green Forest). The place was tiny but full of diners. We squeezed into the last table available. There appeared to be only four staff working and one of them was in the kitchen. A small family run restaurant. There were cute drawings on the wall to give a cozy feeling. The menu is in Chinese only. There is no English and no 10%

The menu is in Chinese only. There is no English and no 10% service charge. You check off what you want or you can also tell the staff. They offer a variety of regular dishes commonly served at home.
They also offer noodles with a chicken soup base that they claim has been cooked for five hours.
We also found something oddly amusing. Two bottles shaped like a man and woman. One housed coffee, the other was milk tea. Did they really serve it in those bottes, I wondered. We had to order it.
And so they were really served in those bottles!!! OH! The fun we had! The drinks were $20 each. A decent size as well. The male (they called Macho) is coffee. The female (the menu named her Bobo) is Hong Kong style milk tea. Honestly, I usually don't like Hong Kong style milk tea or cha chan teng style coffee because it always leaves a gritty aftertaste on my tongue. But here I was pleasantly surprised! The coffee was quite decent. Smooth and slightly sweet. The Hong Kong style milk tea was good as well with no after taste.
We ordered the Chicken with Fish Maw Noodles ($68). You get a choice of noodles so we had rice noodles. There were bits of zucchini. The soup was rich and savory with no hint of MSG at all. The fish maw was huge and smooth. But the chicken was the star. Tender and moist. The meat was seasoned!
The Salt and Pepper Deep Fried Tofu ($38) was spicy. The spices coated every single little tofu piece. The coating was not thick but it was still crispy. The inside of the tofu was still soft as silk.
The Stir Fried Beef and Potatoes ($128) definitely had a homestyle feel. This was served with a heaping bowl of rice. The beef was tender and thickly cut chunks. The potatoes were soft on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside. There were various capsicums as well. It wasn't too oily but it was well seasoned.
The food had a more home style feel to them. There was no MSG at all. There isn't a lot of staff so food does come out rather slow and they are apologetic about it. But the wait is worth it as the food is delicious. Upon leaving they gave me a voucher for a free roast pigeon for next time. I guess there will be a next time! A great find in the hidden part of Wanchai.
