As we had some errands to run on Kowloon side, I turned to OpenRice to see what restaurants to try and this shop came up on the front page. I love xiao lung bao and was curious to see how this stacks up against my favorite at Crystal Jade's. I know everyone loves Ding Tai Fung, but I thought DTF's buns are inferior to Crystal Jade's and the lines are simply not worth it. I love xiao lung bao and was curious to see how this stacks up against my favorite at Crystal Jade's. I know everyone loves Ding Tai Fung, but I thought DTF's buns are inferior to Crystal Jade's and the lines are simply not worth it. We had gotten there pretty early on a weekend around 11:30am and there were plenty of seats. First thing I noticed was that the AC was on full blast so I was pretty cold throughout my meal. The service was friendly enough, which can be a breath of fresh air as it's sometimes a rarity for small local shops in HK.

The menus also serves as placements and it was all in Chinese, though I think they have english menus if you need them. Between the 2 of us, we decided to order the regular xiao lung bao, fish filets in chili oil noodle, sweet and sour spareribs, purple yam dumplings and a jub of soymilk to share.

Soy Milk ($10) - enough for 2 servings. It was sweet and smooth in texture. I hate the ones where you can taste the residual of the soy beans when they didn't grind it enough. Perfect pairing with Shanghainese food.

Xiao Lung Bao ($32) - comes in 4 regular pork dumplings. The skin was thin enough and the soup was plenty. I had no issue picking up the dumplings with the skin still intact. The pork was flavorful as well. However, the skin on the top of the bun was hard which was disappointing. In that case, Cystal Jade's xiao lung bao still comes out on top in my opinion as there was no issue with the top of the dumplings at Crystal Jade's.

Fish filets in Hot Chili Oil Noodle ($52) - we had just tried a similar dish at Crystal Jade's except it was with beef instead of fish. This dish was very disappointing! The fish was hard and rough. It was obviously frozen and not fresh as I detected a hinted of fishy taste. The fish filets for this kind of dish should be smooth and flaky. The soup was the most disappointing as it was not spicy at all compared to the ones at Cystal Jade's where it was very spicy and numbing. Would not recommend.

Sweet and Sour Spareribs ($29) - you can order in 2 sizes and the one we ordered was a half size. Taste was good as it was tangy and just right. Pork was tender enough and peeled away from the bone easily.

Purple Yam Dumplings ($30) - dessert time! We had to wait a while for this as they were steaming from scratch. It arrived with bits of osthamus on top of each dumpling so the smell was amazing! Osthamus is a flower that is usually infused in jelly - a pretty popular dessert in HK. I expected the skin to be thicker so that it would be more mochi like, but instead the skin was quite thin so at the end of the day, you're really just eating purple yam. Nothing wrong with that as the purple yam was quite yummy and not too sweet, but I was expecting more I guess.

Great service, clean shop, but food was just okay. I would eat here if I happen to be around this area, but not worth trekking for. As the prices are not that much cheaper than Crystal Jade's, I would rather eat at Crystal Jade's instead and the environment would be much nicer.
