Fulum is a household name. With several restaurants throughout Hong Kong, its known for classic Cantonese food at a value price. Good for families but too traditional for a younger generation to go on their own. Boyfriend and I love Chinese food and we do eat at a lot of old style Chinese restaurants. We always find the food is good and at a reasonable price. Yes, they may not be fancy or social media worthy like the modern Chinese restaurants that have popped up but we always know we won't be b
Boyfriend's out of town friend was staying in Shatin so we decided to find somewhere nearby to have dinner. Looking around, I discovered FL Fusion. This is Fulum for a younger generation. I thought a pretty good choice as his friend wanted Chinese food but yet I felt we should do something modern.
Located in a small mall just next to New Town Plaza, it was bright and shiny. We arrived early and got a table very quickly but as the night wore on, it started to fill up with everyone from younger families and seniors.
Layout was spacious. I thought the addition of fake bird cages was a nice touch.
Menu is in English and Chinese. It is in the form of a check off piece of paper. They had everything from dim sum to Chinese mains and desserts.
The menu stated that there is a $6 tea charge per person. However, if one person orders a special drink, this charge is waived. So, I ordered one.
Fresh Strawberry Yogurt Slush ($32). I ordered this as I love strawberries. I was totally taken aback with it arrived on a floatie! It felt a bit strange to be drinking it out of a floatie when you're not at the beach? Or near any water. It was good with a light strawberry flavor. A perfectly cold drink for the hot summer weather.
Mango Slush with Pineapple ($32). After mine arrived in floatie, boyfriend's friend wanted to get one, too just to see if it came in floatie. So, he chose the mango version. And yes! It came in a floatie! This was super sweet so good for those that want something more sugary.
Chicken with Black Pepper Bun ($38). On the menu in Chinese, it said they were lychee buns. When they arrived, they were cute little pink buns with a ridge exterior to mimic what lychee look like. The stems appeared to be bits of chives. The buns were fluffy and soft. The filling was moist tender chicken with a savory black pepper sauce that was quite good as there wasn't so much black pepper that it was overpowering.
Steamed Shrimp and Vegetable Dumplings ($38). The thin skin on these were so transparent, you could see the filling. It was a good blend of shrimp and vegetable.
Tofu Duo with Forest Mushrooms ($78). Probably my favorite! We weren't sure what a tofu duo was so we ordered it. The tofu was layered with a generous serving of forest mushrooms. These had a very strong woodsy taste.
The tofu was actually two layers. Bottom layer was a smooth soft tofu. Top layer was a mixture of tofu and spinach. It was then shaped into a square and braised together. It was easy to slice as it didn't fall apart. A great textural difference of smooth and firm.
Wok Fried Lobster and Crab with Crispy Garlic ($498). We saw originally this cost $998 but there was a discount so we decided to cash in on the promotion. Looking around, I saw other tables order it as well. At first I feared it might be too spicy and so I held my drink firmly but then it was ok! It was spicy enough for me to handle. It was fragrant from the crispy garlic topping. There was a mix of crab and lobster bits. There were enough claws for us to not fight over. Meat was fresh and firm. This was delicious and definitely a good deal. The toppings were so good, boyfriend said he didn't want to waste it so his friend and him ordered some rice to finish it off.
Steamed Pear with Osmanthus ($38). For dessert, we shared a pear with osmanthus syrup. A sticky sweet syrup covered the soft pear. A pretty good compliment to the spicy seafood dish we just finished.
Food was pretty good with modern feel to it. Dim sum had a fun design. Price was reasonable and service cleared our dishes at a reasonable pace. I'd be back if in the area. Probably try out lunch as they have more dim sum choice.
