Walking around Wan Chai with boyfriend, I was surprised to find Chotto Maki had opened a branch in Wan  Chai. A long while back, I had eaten at their original branch in  Central by myself. I thought it was pretty good though reminded me of the sushi I had while living in Canada. A Westernized sushi roll. I told him about it so we decided to eat here for dinner as he was curious. The Wanchai branch is much bigger than the Central one but not as colorfully decorated.Menu is in English and Chinese.

Menu is in English and Chinese. There is no 10% service charge. They have both huge rolls and regular bite size versions. All are $72. They also offer sushi and sashimi.

Sea Monster ($72) was a made up of imitation crab meat, tempura prawn, cucumber and topped with garlic chips and sakura shrimp for crunch. There was also some sweet potato powder and sweet unagi sauce and their own special sauce which tasted a bit like teriyaki. It was big and yes, it felt like shoveling rice in your mouth.  But it was good. Refreshing from the cucumber and crunchy with all the crunchy toppings and tempura.

Beef-Iyaki ($72) was another huge one made of teriyaki beef, tofu skin, avocado and cucumber, topped with garlic chips and tobiko. It was also drizzled in the same sauce as the previous roll. The beef was juicy and savory from the teriyaki sauce. I liked the addition of tofu skin as I never thought to add something like that to my rolls.

Mango Dynamite ($72) was a classic we order quite a bit elsewhere. The roll was made up of tempura prawn and cucumber, topped with mango slices and tobiko. Love the sweetness of the mango combined with the saltiness of the tobiko. A good balance of crunchy and mushy.

Black Magma ($72) was a bit out there. Made up of chopped scallop and negitoro, it was topped with tempura bits and black sesame sauce. I wasn't sure about the black sesame sauce. It felt out of place. But other than that, it was a decent roll. Different but didn't really work for me.

The big ones were just messy to eat so we preferred the small bite sized ones. But the big ones had more interesting combinations. Boyfriend agreed that the rolls reminded me of the ones back in the US. Which we did like as they were always pretty good in their own way. And much larger in size. One of these days I should try  make my own but I'm often too lazy to do so.
