Today, my friend and I went to The Charcoal Room, a rooftop Korean BBQ restaurant in Mong Kok. We were feeling quite hungry, so we ordered the supreme set, which consisted of a starter, many barbeque items, a seafood soup with rice and a dessert.The starter was an ox tongue stew with soybean paste and radish, garnished with spring onions and sesame seeds. The starter was an ox tongue stew with soybean paste and radish, garnished with spring onions and sesame seeds. The ox tongue was very tender and flavourful, and the radishes were soft and not bland at all.
The barbecue items included red shrimp with cuttlefish, a beef cut platter with pork belly, and we also added on a beef prime rib. It came with a variety of sides, such as bean sprouts, kimchi, pickles, lettuce and a cup of mozzarella to be melted.
As we were not KBBQ experts, the staff were very friendly and willing to help. The pork belly was marinated so it was very flavourful and crispy. The cuts of beef were very beautifully marbled, and was very tasty. The extra prime beef rib came to the table whole, and a waiter offered to cut it up for easy grilling. The meats were all very fresh and juicy even after grilling, and cut just to the right thickness.
The seafood was also a nice addition, the shrimp was very juicy as it was grilled in the shell, and the cuttlefish and shrimp were very chewy.
For our rice dish, we ordered the seafood soup with tofu. There were shrimps, clams, and enoki mushrooms in a spicy soup. The dessert was an egg cake drizzled in honey.
We also ordered two drinks - a milk soda and a citron lemon soda, both of which were presented nicely and were very refreshing - much needed to cool us down from the spicy soup and hot meats.
On the whole, the outdoor setting of this restaurant is perfect for KBBQ, and the meats served are fresh and of high quality, and it was an excellent experience overall.
