We chose Hamataki as we were hungry and the reviews looked OK so we rushed in. The decor is pretty authentic and homely for a small restaurant. I was surprised it was all high tables and chairs so not really suitable for kids but as restaurants go, small and homely. We ordered:Cold tofu: this came out covered with dried prawns with just a little dash of soy sauce. I could tell it was bad from looking at it because the tofu still had the ridges from the packet. We ordered:
Cold tofu: this came out covered with dried prawns with just a little dash of soy sauce. I could tell it was bad from looking at it because the tofu still had the ridges from the packet. And it was bad. They were basically very cheap and chose a Chinese tofu used for cooking instead of a Japanese silken tofu.
Beef satay ramen. It was an unusual choice as I'd never seen this in Japan or other ramen store. The soup itself was pretty good. The noodles could have had a bit more bite but it was OK. The beef satay itself wasn't bad, the beef was OK quality and the satay sauce was sweet and peanut tasting.
Yakitori platter. This was just appalling. When it came, I should have sent it back immediately but we just decided not to come back. It was clear they don't grill their skewers over coals or an electric grill as the sticks had no charring at all. So, they basically put everything into an oven and just let it steam. The beef, the pork neck, the octopus, the chicken and mushroom were all tasteless and pretty disgusting actually. They were the worst skewers I have ever had anywhere in the world. Do not order as they have no idea how to cook and it was HK$280 for a tiny plate of 5 skewers so an utter rip off.
